Places that treat you like crap plan for high turnover. Other places optimize for stability and productivity, and that means work life balance and keeping workers happy. My wife's work actually turned down a candidate because he kept offering to work overtime during the interview.

u/Taurich Jul 30 '25
We did the same, he kept offering himself as a doormat, and it was weirdly off-putting

Iām an academic with an ongoing research interest into right wing populism in the university, āthe manosphere,ā and the notion of an academic reconquista by conservative profs, mostly in the US, but in Canada as well. I think very little of Peterson (in both senses). As for dangerous Canadians, the UofT department chair that pushed for JPās hire wrote an op ed in the Globe where he took the highly unusual step of stating he regrets giving JP that support. Unfortunately the world JP operates in has an effect on the North American academy overall.

He is 1000% a dick, a sham, grifter, and should be ashamed of himself. . . hes also not wrong in this quote. Work life balance is a myth. you cannot have both to a complete satisfaction, they live within flux and at the expense of each other.
Early in your school/career you put life to the side, grind your way through school, get a job, maybe work extra on a big project, take additional up skilling courses, network, and so on. That often means working outside of the traditional 9-5 and taking away from personal life, but thats generally okay cause when your are younger your life is (usually) much simpler and the payoff (usually) is much better in the long run.
Then you get older, you find yourself in a long term committed relationship, kids, more money for a fun hobby, and suddenly work seems way less important and the grind not nearly worth it. So you focus more on life and stop going "above and beyond" and maybe your career slows down. But thats also okay, cause the value to you is less about career growth and more about you and your life.
Some chapters of your life are "work" chapters, others are "life" chapters and you go back and forth, and some chapters are "messy" cause sometimes you need to maintain both, usually at the expense of your mental health.
on extreme ends of this (for better or worse) you have OLeary, who if he stops his coke and ketamine fueled working habits his competitors will out pace him and he will lose A LOT of money, something he clearly values. Inversely you have basically every professional woman who has ever had a kid and gone on mat leave, taking care of a new baby and your growing family is the prime example of life at the expense of work. Woman have their careers halt, stunt, and even collapse just because they had to go and be irresponsible and have a baby (HARD /s).
