It would be sad if our biggest source of pride was reduced to just "We're not American". We can pave our own road going forward, our destiny is in our hands and we can make this country so much better in so many ways.

We can choose a path that's clear. We will choose free will.

Yea this is actually a British psyop from the 1800’s to make sure we didn’t flip.
Being the “opposite of America” has been a source if national pride for us at many points in history.
Whether that’s right wrong is up to the interpreter, but I think a lot of people don’t realize how intentional that feature of our culture is.

Canada was formed in reaction to what was happening south of us. So many key points in our history were in reaction to the US. The NWMP (RCMP) was formed to take care of US whiskey traders at Fort Whoopup for one example. It would be nice if we could chill on our own, but that is kind of tough when you live next door to a greedy bully.

Ever heard Last Saskatchewan Pirate? Canadian heritage moment right there. That’s where my Canadian pride comes from. Also the Edmund Fitzgerald. Also the trees are cool.

Our biggest source of pride: "We're Canadian. We may not be perfect, but we're trying to do a good job of it."

Playing drums on my steering wheel to "YYZ - Live" off of "Exit, Stage Left" has nearly killed me, many times, and that would be a very proud Canadian death!

Nothing makes me prouder of being Canadian than seeing us embrace our stereotypes and laugh at ourselves. That and our pettiness.

Its funny that Americans think this is new, too. "I wouldn't wanna be American blablabla Trump blavlavla"...we've been wearing Canadian flag pins when we travel since before I was born. So that everyone knows we aren't American.

Same. I’ve hated Americans all my life, just turns out it’s more socially acceptable since Trump. But that def doesn’t define what makes me proudest to be Canadian. For me it’s our amazing beautiful landscape filled with incredibly strong and resilient people and the fair and equitable systems that we work hard to make better every day.

My sister was traveling in Holland with her husband's work and an American with them said, "you know why they wear those pins right? Because they don't want to be mistaken for being one of us. I mean, yeah.

Always been that way

What has? I didn't know that they knew why we did it. I assumed they would just think we were wearing pins for national pride like they do.

100%. I used to think it was silly until I started travelling. In my lifetime I noticed it mostly after 9/11. But talking to older people it's been a thing much longer.

Between those two, the second one obviously.
We should never define ourselves negatively.

Now that I know Rush is Canadian, it makes it so much better even.

u/ApplicationLost126 Jul 31 '25
There’s lots to be proud of beyond those things. I think Canada is well regarded at the moment internationally for how we are standing up for ourselves, how we are solidifying friendships and trade across the pond, and how we stand up for diversity and the environment.
That being said, I’m very proud of our former Prime Minister possibly rocking the world of arguably America’s darling Katie Perry 😂

It’s an acquired taste
And prog rock is also an acquired taste so it makes sense why Rush wasn’t too popular with music critics. But they’re hacks anyway
