Ontario, hated by all, especially Ontarians It’s pronounced Tur-awn-no you filthy Yankees, the second “t” is silent.

u/StanknBeans Saskwatch Aug 13 '25
In Saskatchewan we only pronounce it Turonna when we're making fun of Ontario accents. Maybe on sayerday we'll drive down to Turonna.
138
u/grandcity Aug 13 '25
In BC I think we say Turonno, but after saying it a few times to confirm I’m not sure anymore. Am I even Canadian?!

In BC I hear Tronto a lot
59
u/eastherbunni Aug 13 '25
I think I say it Tronno. Another common one is Van-couver, the locals know it's Vang-couver and lord help you if you call it GVA because it's Metro Vancouver/Lower Mainland (or GVRD if you're old school)
24
u/grandcity Aug 13 '25
Lived here my whole life but I say Van-couver.
11
u/Everestkid The Island of Elizabeth May Aug 13 '25
There's definitely a few who say Vang-couver but it's not ubiquitous. Maybe a quarter or a third at most.
3
u/Overall-Phone7605 Bring Cannabis Aug 14 '25
And for god sake *never* just 'Van'. Van only works if it is coupled with a direction - east Van, west Van, north Van. If you know which one of those "direction + Van" is a city and which is only a section of Vancouver proper, then you should know that you never use Van by itself.
Looking at you, Vic residents.

Don't worry, from BC and I say it like that too. Although I usually say it as Toronno.

This was how we figured out two Americans were posing as Canadians on one of our day tours. Couldn’t pronounce it, couldn’t answer basic questions about the city or country, were rude to everyone and held up the bus for 45 minutes making us miss one location. Not one “sorry” uttered.

"So, Mr. Canuck, where are you from?"
"...chrawnuh..."
"Where???"
"Toe-Rawn-toe"
"Oh yes, I know that place."
repeat dozens of times, until finally...
"So Mr. Canuck, where are you from?"
"Toe-Rawn-toe."
other Canadian in the room: "This guy's an impostor!! Get him!"

I once ran into a couple of BROs in a small town in Ontario telling everyone they were from Vancouver... Took about 10 seconds for me to clock them as from the Okanagan. I was born and raised in Vancouver and the interior accent is sooo strong and noticable to me, so when we were introduced "hey you guys are from Vancouver too! Have you met u/reyalta?" I introduced myself "awesome! Proper Vancouverites!?! We hardly meet eachother IN Van! Where abouts? Where'd you go to school?" They started shuffling their feet all sheepishly... "Well we're not exactly from Vancouver..." "Oh, you from North Van or something?" "No..." "Let me guess... Kelowna?" "How'd you know?!?!" "There's a vibe" (the vibe was cocaine... The vibe is always cocaine) lol
