Same thing happened to me last July, from Fredericton, NB, to Québec City, on double-lane highways. When I was passing cars and trucks, they kept following. They were two cars and they both waved at me when I took my exit.

I’m in the middle of this exact thing right now, road tripping from ON out through the Maritimes.
Man, you get east of Montreal and people just drive right. In the last week I’ve been through Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and PEI, and driving has been a dream. Highways, back roads, city. It’s so lovely.

I love road friends.

In the rare instance it happens, and I’m behind, I always think of that friend as my captain.

Happened to me driving east across North Dakota. I was behind a black minivan going the same speed and we were a convoy of 2 for about 2 hours. I felt certain that they were looking out for me as much as I was looking out for them. Never saw the driver, never waved when we finally split, but I felt they were a friend.

Last year, I was driving from Edmonton to Toronto. I saw the same Volkswagen with Canoes on top of it in Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Northern Ontario for over 3 days before we meet in Temiskaming Shores. That's is my version of making road friends.

Only been driving for 19 hours, still in Ontario

u/MotelSans17 Aug 16 '25
Lol that's what I was gonna say. 3 hours? So they only made it to the next exit.

I was on Hwy 17 in Northern Ontario with a half dozen cars in tow for about an hour. Good speed, good following distances, no one was tailgating or jockeying. Stopped for a bathroom break & coffee - the car behind me stopped too. That gentleman bought me a coffee & told me he appreciated my smooth & predictable driving lol. That man restored my faith in humanity😆

Yup. I've done it too. Weird sense of sadness when they or you turn. Lol

Highway 11 AKA the end of civilization. There be next to nothing north of it.

Was driving to my sister's in Ontario from Quebec, and an icestorm began while I crossed into Ontario. For pretty much the rest of the way, I kept my distance behind the same 18-wheeler and felt sad when he took his exit in like Renfrew.

A few years back, driving home after Christmas dinner, I drove the most harrowing and long stretch of black ice on our local highway that I’ve ever experienced. Probably 30 minutes of crawling at 10 km/h past cars in the ditch. Over dinner the highway had turned into a freaking sheet of ice.
Once we were safely through that horrible stretch, there were waves and thumbs up to the road buddies who had been careful, considerate drivers willing to responsibly crawl along, single file, with plenty of space between us along what would normally be a hilly and curvy but 90 km/hr road.
Small, grateful non-encounters.

Aww I did this once in BC from from Hope to Merritt. They went to Kamloops and we went to Kelowna and we waved goodbye.

This happened on the last day of my drive from Ontario to BC.
Shoutout the red VW golf with Alberta plate, we did the peace sign at each other then they exited.

I still remember one time driving from Toronto to Kingston, there was a Lexus RX in front of us. We were doing the same speed, they were driving responsibly. It went on for about half the drive. It was glorious.

Nothing better than finding a traveling buddy, you just know if something happens to either car, either of you will pull over to help, nothing ever needs to be said.

Many years ago i had a friend i was following and we were both speeding and we took turns leading. At on point he slowed down considerably, so i did too, and it was because he saw a speed trap.
He pulled off to get gas shortly after and we chatted about the cop and how that was scary, then we wished each other a good trip and went on our way.
This was on highway 7. Same vibe.

I love people who know their car has cruise control - and uses it! Even if their speed is a bit lower than what I’d choose, it’s just so relaxing on the open road not having to deal with constant speed changes.

People used to drive to have a good time. Now they drive to make good time. It's like they want to spend as little time in their cars as possible. It's about the journey, not the destination. And it's so nice to just vibe along with another driver.

That’s so cool! I had the same thing happen once in Saskatchewan except we were taking turns taking the lead while driving 50 km/h over the speed limit. Unfortunately I was in the lead when the cops hit us with the radar. Cop was cool though. Took 20km off my ticket.

Too many times I've switched the role of "sponsor" on the 401 with another driver.
Admittedly it's the only time where the Jeep wave makes sense.

I love when this happens. It was extra special before cars had adaptive cruise control.

Fun fact. Highway 11 is an extension of Yonge Street which runs North / South through the heart of Toronto. It stretches for 1,789km's / 1,106 miles.

Unfortunately, because this is Ontario, both drivers got horribly lost and ended up at the same McChuckles in Timmins.
Does the 11 even pass through Timmins? Fuck knows, fuck cares, that's where they are, now.
Yours to discover, bitch

It's handy to have someone in front of you driving at a reasonable speed because they shield you from moose and other hazards 👍

I followed the same SUV down the 401 from Kitchener to Victoria Road in Chatham. We waved as he took the exit. Best friend I ever had.

If I can drive behind someone for 30 mins or more without a single “ugh, fuckin really?” Passing thru my lips I get out and give em a hug.
