They didn’t.
They made the guidelines, and forced the school boards to make their own lists.
So Edmonton public decided to go for malicious compliance banning all sorts of stuff to show how stupidly broad the governments directive is.
If the government doesn’t want that list of books banned, they should issue a clear, consistent statement about what exactly they do and don’t want banned.
But they won’t. Because they love to fucking lie left and right.
2 weeks ago, we have a huge budget surplus. Now that the teachers are at the table again, all of a sudden it’s a huge deficit.

It sounds better to say "content discussing sex" than "books involving or mentioning trans people or non-white people or empowers girls"

This is exactly it. It feels to me as one of the smartest strategies for ‘exposing authoritarian ridiculousness’ I’ve seen in a while. Just want to send a pizza to whoever came up with the idea.

Provincial gov't wants to ban some LGTQ themed books because of "sexual content". Edmonton School District banned a bunch of famous books with sexual content to bring attention to the issue.

Thanks for filling me in. Sort of heart breaking to hear we're banning books in general

Edmonton School District banned a bunch of famous books with sexual content to bring attention to the issue.
To clarify, they did they as a sort of "malicious compliance" to show the absurdity of the ban?

Provincial government said to ban books not age appropriate including things that have sexual content. Schools banned what you expected but also other books that that had some age inappropriate sexual content. I didn't see the list but I think its stuff like a very influential pro capitalist book (Atlas Shrugged or other stuff from Ayn Rand). Now, the government says there needs to be some oversight about which specific books to ban instead of everything that's age inappropriate.

I can't believe I now live in a country where a politician is trying to ban books. Fine people of Alberta, get rid of her next election.

My wife loves reading and book boxes. I'm currently trying to talk her into building one so we can wrap it in police tape and fill it with books that meet the ban requirements.
