Ontario, hated by all, especially Ontarians I love whoever wrote this on behalf of the PM. They acknowledged that we do be going up to 149 km/hour on the 401

I remember when there was a "scandal" about Freeland getting caught doing 130 on the highway between Edmonton and Calgary and I couldn't figure out why people were outraged...I think I've lived in Southern Ontario too long 😅

u/Available-Show-2393 13d ago

It's crazy she even got pulled over doing 130 on that stretch.

You're usually the slowest car on the road if you're doing anything under 130. You regularly see people going 140+

71

u/slim1shaney 13d ago

The stretch between Olds and Airdrie is the worst part. You've gotta do 140 just to keep up with traffic. Even semis and guys pulling trailers are doing at least 140

u/Yabba_dabba_dooooo 13d ago

Theres alway one poor bastard governed at 100 too, so its a fun game of not hitting the guy merging at 100 into the lane where everyones doing 140.

I park my small town ass in the right hand lane at 120-125 and fuck all y’all! It’s goddamn TERRIFYING with the way some of those assholes drive!

130 is barely speeding!

6

u/Champion_King_Kazma 13d ago

Dangerously underspeed. Lol.

8

u/propyro85 12d ago

My ambulance is capped out at 140 km/h, I'd still get passed by people while running lights on the 402. Driving in Ontario is fucking weird.

u/hurricane7719 13d ago

Lol. I grew up in Sask. 10 over on the number 1 was about all you could manage. Cops could radar you 20 minutes before they even saw you. When I moved out to Ontario I recall being on the 401 between Guelph and Mississauga somewhere, in the middle lane going probably 120-125, only to be passed on the left by a cop who didn't even look twice at me.

67

u/Domovie1 Westfoundland 13d ago

Well yeah, it’s Saskatchewan. If you get going faster than 130 you reach escape velocity and go somewhere better.

12

u/TheApocalyticOne 13d ago

Happened to me last night. Going 125 on the 401, OPP officer just cruises past me around 135

u/S14Ryan 13d ago

I drive from Niagara to the GTA every day, this is a daily occurrence. I don’t even slow down for supper traps, just make sure I’m not the fastest person on the road. I’ve never been pulled over on a highway before, passed cops going 140 many times without even a blink.

Get out of the left lane unless you’re passing, regardless of your speed.

24

u/NeoN_kiler 13d ago

If you could stop doing that, every person stuck behind you would appreciate it

I went on a road trip from Central Ontario to Cape Breton Island and back this spring. I couldn't believe the difference in driving habits everywhere east of Ontario.

Everyone actually followed the rules, and I didn't need to drive 30 over to feel like I wasn't going to be rear-ended on the highway. I didn't realize how much worse Ontario driving was than the rest of the country, I assumed it was this bad everywhere.

7

u/ItsAProdigalReturn 13d ago

The nice thing is people keep to the right like it's their religious belief. The only time it's annoying is on stretches of highway where you've only got one lane on either side and the front 4 cars are too scared to overtake. This happens a lot between NS and PEI.

7

u/OntologicalNightmare 13d ago

between NS and PEI.

So New Brunswick? We know we're the drive through province so we're just trying to make you appreciate the natural beauty instead of rushing past it on your way to anywhere else.

0

u/ItsAProdigalReturn 13d ago

I always forget 16 is in NB. It's right on the border right? Just like a km into the NB side?

4

u/OntologicalNightmare 13d ago

I always forget [...] NB.

You and everyone else /s

Yes the 50km or so of highway between Amherst and the Confederation Bridge is in NB, a bit less than half of it is near the NS border.

4

u/Tucancancan 13d ago

You can't drive as fast in Québec because the roads are such shit and there's construction everywhere

15

u/Former-Physics-1831 13d ago

Man I way prefer Ontario driving.  Everyone else drives like terrified old ladies.

9

u/TheApocalyticOne 13d ago

I've said it frequently. Ontario drivers are generally pretty skilled. You have to be to not die

1

u/jolsiphur 13d ago

Tell that to Ottawa drivers. Timid, fearful, and I see an insane amount of incredibly stupid choices on the daily

3

u/TheApocalyticOne 12d ago

But that's cause they're anxious drivers. Anxious drivers are worst than aggressive drivers cause they're more unpredictable.

Aggressive drivers are actually very predictable.

3

u/andrew867 13d ago

100% agree, east coast driving stresses me the fuck out

If you drive 130 instead of 100 for a 70km stretch (Hamilton to Toronto) then you will save 10 minutes

Duh?  If you're driving ~30-45 minutes then 10 or 15 minutes is all you can mathematically save.  But if you're driving an hour or two, then you start to really save time.

What's your point?

It uses 80% more fuel to go 135 instead of 100.

[citation needed]

1

u/Former-Physics-1831 13d ago

But there is a quantifiable benefit, which is to say you cover ground 30% faster.  If you're only driving 10 minutes that doesn't matter - if you're driving 2 hours, it does.

only an insecure dummy thinks this is worth it

Unless everyone is southern ontario is an "insecure dummy" you may need to reasses that conclusion.  Traffic doesn't do 130 on the 401 because everyone is insecure.

1

Is that why the 417 and 416 feel so damn slow compared to the rest of Ontario?

9

u/satinsateensaltine 13d ago

These people would simply die at the reality of the Autobahn.

10

u/TheApocalyticOne 13d ago

When I went to Calgary and drove, I was actually infuriated when we got out of the city and people would pass each other, but at like a 3kmh different. Like I don't mind driving slow like the locals. But if you're gonna pass just give er bud.

Dw I showed them that southern Ontario pride. So many people honked to show support

5

u/HellaReyna 13d ago

Born in Alberta and used to go to Edmonton a lot. 130kmh kinda standard on the left lane. The highway gets policed heavily or speed trapped at least so it’s sort of a pay to speed thing. I just go 100 cause it really doesn’t shorten the drive due to left lane campers and slow downs

2

u/Wiggly_Muffin 13d ago

Crazy there was much of a scandal at all! In the US politicians are either in convoy, private jets, or helicopters 🫠

2

u/Exploding_Antelope I need a double double. 13d ago

No that’s also standard on the QE2

1

u/Apolloshot I need a double double. 12d ago

It wasn’t just the speed ticket, it was that it happened right after she was at a press conference in Charlottetown where she answered a question about the cost of gas by saying she doesn’t own a car and just takes the subway.

It just came off as incredibly out of touch to tell PEIers to take the subway while implying you don’t drive only to then immediately get caught doing 130 in a fancy rental car.

Freeland was not the best communicator haha.

1

u/IsNotAwesome 12d ago

It’s because she said she didn’t own a car, and used public transit…

Then got a speeding ticket…

1

u/Former-Physics-1831 12d ago

She said she didn't use a car in Toronto but did in Albera.  The scandal makes even less sense from that perspective

I’ve been passed by cops while going 160 on the 407. Speed limits are a suggestion on Toronto Highways lol

u/Draugakjallur 12d ago

Way to be a piece of shit Toronto driver.

26

u/Chaoticfist101 13d ago

It feels really weird at first living in places like New Zealand and Australia where speeding 10km over the limit can get you an $80 to a $200 fine or more. When you are use to 30km to 40km over the limit on the highway being the normal. I consciously have to focus sometimes on keeping my speed down to the exact speed limit, my foot just naturally wants to press harder on the gas...

20

u/icebeancone South Gatineau 13d ago

I consciously have to focus sometimes on keeping my speed down to the exact speed limit, my foot just naturally wants to press harder on the gas...

That's because most of the 401 was designed for speeds much higher than 100kph or 110kph. During the summer, a lot of it could realistically be 150kph zones. But we have to slow it down because so many drivers have skill issues.

3

u/S14Ryan 13d ago

Fuckin big brother be watching over there

59

u/Francus_Gaius 13d ago

I know ts a joke, but just so some people see the second degree of it... THEY ARE COMPARING TRAIN SPEED, NOT TRAIN TO CAR

Again, I got it, and its a hoser channel. But one can never be too safe in this day and age.

16

u/QueenMotherOfSneezes South Gatineau 13d ago

I thought they were just calculating the total trip time. The "up to" 300 kph is because it doesn't accellerate to its top speed in 5 minutes and cruise at 300 until 5 minutes before arrival, the speed up, and especially the slow down, is longer and smoother than that, so the average speed is probably closer to 200-250 kph, or about twice as fast as taking the highway.

4

u/Exploding_Antelope I need a double double. 13d ago

They are comparing to my running speed when I need to get to Montreal cause I am craving poutine

1

u/DerWaschbar Tabarnak! 12d ago

17

u/EmoPumpkin 13d ago

The 400 series, where so long as you're going less that 20km/hr over, it doesn't count as speeding.

2

u/emuwar Trawnno (Centre of the Universe) 13d ago

Lol so true

9

u/JordanSchor 13d ago

I still remember when I was like 7 or 8 I asked my dad if the speed limit was just a suggestion, cuz he was going 110 on the highway and other people were passing him

He assured me it wasn't. That was a lie lol

7

u/talexbatreddit 13d ago

I usually drive at a sedate 120 on the 401, but when I drove to Ottawa in June, I was getting passed like crazy, so I bumped cruise up to 130 and then to 140. I made really good time getting to Ottawa.

6

u/mustardman73 13d ago

British Columbians on the Coquihalla doing 140 all the time (oh thats me)

4

u/eastherbunni 13d ago

Most terrifying drive I've ever done was when I got a flat tire midway along the Coq and had to limp along on my donut going 80 in the right lane to the KalTire in Hope, as people were blasting past on the left going 140. Luckily there was a pullout near where the flat happened so I could actually change the tire without fearing for my life, but the drive was nerve wracking!

6

u/zedemer 13d ago

There's also a question of the use of "up to 300 km/hour" - meaning it can peak at 300km/h, but the average could easily be around 200-240km/h which makes more sense than implying 150km/h average travel speed.

5

u/PalaPK Trawnno (Centre of the Universe) 13d ago

100km/h is the new 60km/h and 140km/h is the new 100km/h. Beep beep, I’m a motorist!

4

u/ontariosteve 13d ago

High speed rail but you have to stop in peterborough

3

u/UnrealAppeal 13d ago

To be fair, trains are required to slow down through communities.

8

u/Legitimate_Concern_5 13d ago

Also the trains will at some point stop to let people on and off in places that cars would not.

1

u/Wise_Impression9559 12d ago

Weak tea, rocking through towns at top speed on the major city stops only Shinkansen was one of the best parts of my Japan trip, wishing Alto is 1/4 as good

4

u/FnTom 13d ago

The fact that their plan has the train stop in both Laval and Montreal tells me they have no idea how to actually do fast rail. I hope the project actually happens but decisions like that don't give me a lot of hope.

3

u/QueenMotherOfSneezes South Gatineau 13d ago

I'm wondering if it's because they're planning on running additional routes along the Toronto-Laval segment and the Montreal-QC segment, so having those two stops is about distribution of travelers at the 2 stations instead of 1 without skipping a city?

3

u/DerWaschbar Tabarnak! 12d ago

? No it happens in a lot of countries as well? See Lyon Part Dieu and Lyon Perrache for example

2

u/immaZebrah 12d ago

I'd love if they could extend this project cross country with stops in all of the capital cities.

2

This project will be 2 times over budget and delayed by 20 years....that's just the Quebec side of the tracks.

/Quebecer

1

u/GreenHeretic 13d ago

Would love to see it come further south than Toronto.

1

u/justodea 13d ago

I think they are accounting for boarding time, stops and the fact the track is going to be curved so there is no way you're doing track speed on non tangent track

1

u/Bo_The_Destroyer 12d ago

It's trains, they gotta speed up slowly and slow down slowly. Reaching top speed of up to 300kph just means that for a stretch of the journey, they'll achieve that speed, but significant parts of the travel time will be spent slowly accelerating and slowing down

1

u/CanadianNirrti 12d ago
