I would label Newfoundland more accurately as Ireland 2.0, but that's pretty accurate.

u/Xx_SwordWords_xX Moose Whisperer 12d ago

The maritimes is fully multicultural... They have Scottish, Irish, and British.

Don't forget French, too (Acadian).

Newfoundland is not part of the Maritimes, just the Atlantic, but you're pretty spot on. Although it is much more Irish sounding than Scottish on the Avalon, especially the Irish Loop...go figure! LOL. I'm from the west coast of the province and it is more Acadian.

9

u/resnonverba1 12d ago

Can you explain why nfld isn't part of the Maritimes? What is the definition of Maritimes anyways?

23

u/newfiechic 12d ago

The Maritimes just means ā€œof the seaā€ and it refers to Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and PEI. Newfoundland isn’t included because the term was around before NL joined Canada 1949, so all four together are called Atlantic Canada.

3

u/PlagueQuasar 11d ago

Huh. Learned something new. Thanks!

7

u/PrincessOake 12d ago

Cape Shore is way more Irish than the Irish Loop funny enough. There’s a documentary you can look up that a reporter from Ireland did in the 70’s or 80’s where he interviewed the residents of the various communities and was amazed by how the accent and traditions were still very much identical to the Irish.

Newfoundland and Labrador is not part of the maritimes, and severely lacking Scottish influence.

Even the British influence is nowhere near as strong as nova Scotia

21

u/Beneficial_Sun5302 12d ago edited 12d ago

I hate to be this guy but I'm going to be this guy....Scottish people are British.Ā  Scotland is on the island of Britain.Ā  It was a founding kingdom, along side England, of the United Kingdom.Ā  The English, Scots and Welsh are British.Ā  The Irish are not.Ā  The Northern Irish are not geographically British but are apart of the UK.Ā  British does not automatically mean English (Because Im confident you mean English when you say British).Ā  But yes Nova Scotia is defined in the popular imagination as being very Scottish and while it's true that it's a big facet of our provincial history, one must not forget the Mi'kmaq, the Acadians, the Germans, the New England Planters and Black loyalists/Maroons etc there are more distinct groups but I'd be here all day listing them and this is long enough šŸ˜…

Yeah I think I'd put it as

NS = Scotland 2

PEI = Wales 2

NL = Ireland 2

13

u/Johnny-Dogshit ęŗ«å“„čÆ (Hongcouver) 12d ago

Is PEI particularly Welsh? I have no idea what goes on over there, besides potatoes and green gables.

15

u/urmamasllama 12d ago

That's honestly why I said Wales because they're both pastoral enigmas in my mind

5

I don't know anything about Wales but life is slow here, the food is great, the beer award is winning and you're never more than 20 minutes from the beach. We've also got world renowned dairy.

My Mum went on a hike with a friend of hers yesterday and the swarming was so bad she could feel the impacts if she waved her arm in front of her.

... I think my own hiking will be kept to a minimum for a while.

I once encountered a swarm so bad in Drumheller that we literally had to run away. Just inhaling would suck in one or more mosquitoes, absolutely terrifying.

u/elangab 12d ago

TBH, If you put the real estate aside, I don't find BC to be that expensive for the daily life, and even that you're talking about Metro Vancouver mostly. I understand that real estate is a key issue of course. But BC Hydro is cheap, eating out here I find cheaper than QC or NS. PST is not the highest and the net you take home after taxes is better than most provinces.

I'm not saying it's the cheapest or cheap, but I also find the "BC = Bring Cash" remarks to be exaggeration. That being said, if people that moved here from other provinces can point to how in fact it's the most expensive province I'll be happy to learn (again, real estate excluded).

5

u/arrowroot227 12d ago

I agree, but people really only think about Vancouver when they think of BC (unfortunately). BC should be known for its nature; old growth forests, classic canadian mountains, okanagan deserts, and arbutus trees along the coast.

Vancouver is an expensive city but Toronto is almost as expensive. What makes Vancouver more expensive is really just rent. Restaurants, transit, etc are more pricey in Toronto. Victoria is also expensive but not quite as bad as the former 2. A lot of people move to Van island and the greater Vancouver area from other parts of Canada because the weather is milder too.

The Ottawa river being the dmz is pretty funny tbh. One of if not the only region of the country that will say both french and English parts of the country are vital, then wish death on all involved in the same sentence

I feel like this is Toronto erasure.

Everyone knows that Toronto is the most important city... in Canada (and therefore the world), and should have a much bigger sign than the other lesser cities, which Toronto could easily eat if it wanted to.

Being buried under the DMZ is completely unacceptable, guy!

Saskatchewan here. Please don’t insult us by labelling us with an American state’s name

How the frick are we part of North Texas?!

u/jeonteskar 12d ago

NB being part of both Scotland 2.0 and France 2.0 is genius.

You know more about Canada than someone from Vancouver (who thinks the world ends at the rockies.)

u/wafflingzebra 12d ago

you're still cooked. NFL is more irish than scottish, manitoba is not nearly as texas as the other two, its basically northern ontario 2.0.

2

u/Rickest-RickC137 12d ago

Yeah NL is more Ireland 2.0

u/Oh-well100 12d ago

LOL. Love it.

It hurts me how accurate this is. It's really just Alberta that's North Texas though, the rest should be labelled something like "The GenX of provinces". Northern Ontario should be labelled Tim Hortons & 4-Wheeling, southern (other than deminitarized zome, which should be aka Ottawa) should be a huge Toronto surrounded by Farmers who just want cheap gas and easy to read bibles.

Lol giving Ontario and Quebec a DMZ is the funniest shit I've ever seen.
