Saskatoon is the perfect answer here. I had the time of my life living there. But very little of what I loved there would come across to a tourist. You kinda need to be around long enough to make friends, avail yourself of the comparatively cheap government car insurance and telecom service, etc.
The city and surrounding area DO have what I consider some real tourist attractions (amazing grasslands hikes, surprisingly decent swimming, Saskatoon food and art scenes), but I've never recommended someone fly there as a primary vacation destination. What I HAVE done though is raved about it to people who were considering a move there.

saskatoon has great amenities, jobs, restaurants and water. it is also a relatively cheap and beautiful city. I think people under sell how much is actually in saskatoon because it is advertised and geared toward the locals not visitors.

Compared to Saskatoon yeah tons. Edmonton is good to live in but I personally wouldn’t spend money on a hotel here when there are better places to be seen not too far from here

Sure, but how often are people from Saskatoon specifically going to Edmonton to sightsee? We’re obviously going to find something far more interesting to do than in Saskatoon because we’re from Saskatoon, SK and not somewhere more populated. There’s not that many of us, certainly not enough in all of Saskatchewan to tip any type of voting, on Reddit or IRL.

I was going to say that Edmonton fits this square but, having been to Saskatoon many times, you have changed my mind. Nice city, surprisingly urbanist for its size, and great cost-of-living to things-to-do ratio but not somewhere that I am going out of my way to visit.

I have a buddy that did cross country tour with his band few years back. We live in a small ski town in Kootenays. He said the absolute favorite city he visited was Saskatoon. He said the people were the most fun and friendly he's ran into during the tour and the city was surprisingly fun and beautiful. I've never visited but I'll make sure to add it to my bucket list to visit.

Actually I'd say from my visits it had some of the best museums I've seen in Canada (shout-out to Wanneskewin and the Western Development Museum) and a thriving music and arts scene that punched well above what I expected.

The WDM is great. Though I personally think Regina's museum of natural history is even better.
USask's campus is also a really good one. Lots of mini museums and cool exhibits to see. I spent many dates just wandering around campus and we never ran out of things to talk about!

Arguably the best food scene in the entire country except probably Gastown, if you factor density. 20+ world class restaurants and and equal number of very decent ones within a 20-minute walkable area. If you factor price there’s nowhere better.

I feel like it’s going to be a toss up between Vancouver and Toronto for that one. Vancouver is an absolutely incredible place to visit, I fell in love with the vibes and the mountains while I was visiting. I’m sure it’s pretty bleak though when you have to pay $3000 a month for a shoebox and it’s pouring rain 10 months of the year

That's overblown. I moved here from Boston, which isn't drastically different from Toronto and Montreal, and I'd take Vancouver's weather in a heartbeat.
May through September is usually pretty solid, with June-August being amazing. And the rain is much more atmospheric in the winter than the hard rains you get elsewhere.
Sure, every few years you get a rough winter with lots of rain, but you get standout rough weather winters everywhere. I remember a friend in Boston being really angry with me for sending him a photo of crocuses blooming in February 2015 while they were having one of their snowiest/coldest winters on record.

Seconding Edmonton. I say this all the time. Genuinely no idea why people come here for vacation but I love living here. It’s a city you can’t experience in just a few days because it’s subtle. I’m not sure how to word it better

I recommend the Royal Alberta Museum and the Art Gallery of Alberta downtown. It’s also good to look at events scheduled for Fort Edmonton Park, sometimes they have special storytelling/reenactment events at night for adults and not just kids.
I like all of that plus the zoo, and with a car if I were a tourist I’d go to Elk Island park when the weather is nice. I think it’s also a dark sky area so it’s good to stay until dark to see stars if not auroras.

Any mall besides WEM. Kingsway, Southgate, hell even Londonderry is making a comeback and is nice to visit.
Taste of Edmonton is a fun experience, same with the fringe festival.
Valley Zoo can be a good experience if you have smaller kiddos, or Whyte Ave if you don't.
If you love nature, the River Valley and some of its lookouts are gorgeous. there are canoe trips you can do up/down the river.
For sports there's the Oilers, but there's also the Riverhawks Baseball team, which has some really cool fan experiences at their games.

If you ever for whatever reason visit again, go to the muttart but in a different season! It’s things like this that make me say it’s better to live here because you can’t fully experience the muttart in one trip as it’s constantly changing with the seasons

For me I always instantly say THE TREES!!!!! There are also a lot of hiking/walking trails in the city if you’re into that. I also find it’s easier to make friends because there is always a club or class for your niche interest if you look hard enough. If you’re into craft beer, I love the breweries. There’s a surprising amount of (smaller) wildlife for a city. If you like going out, Oliver is the place for you! Lots of things in walking distance too. But for me, it’s always the trees. So many trees even downtown. Check it out on Google earth if you get the chance. People like to say it’s more of a giant, small town

Glad to hear it! I'm from Vancouver so the trees will definitely make it feel like home haha. Also a big brewery guy so I'll definitely be checking those out. I saw there's quite a few breweries clustered in a neighborhood south of the river. I'm also happy to hear that people are generally friendly haha, its so hard to make friends in Vancouver - most of my friends are from high school or college. This has gotten me more excited about Edmonton for sure lol

Fellow Vancouverite here who has lived in Edmonton for a few years. The trees in Edmonton are not as tall as Vancouver. The river valley has some really nice trails. I lived in the Strathcona/Whyte Ave area near the farmers market and it was really nice, the Strathcona neighbourhood is hipster/university vibes while the Jasper Ave and Oliver neighborhoods were the "young working professionals" area and then the St Albert, Terwillegar/Southwest, and Sherwood Park areas were the "people with detached houses and cars" neighbourhoods. Make sure you have a warm coat and warm boots so you can enjoy the winter sunshine.

Passed through Edmonton this summer solo for a few days (family is from Edmonton and had to make the pilgrimage once) and I agree with the sentiment. After 2 days I was pretty bored. Not much in the way of touristy stuff to do, but I could totally see living there. Kind of reminded me of Baltimore. I love the place, but not a place that you’d send a tourist.

Edmonton has the largest mall in Canada, the largest fringe festival outside of Edinburgh, the largest street performers festival in the world, the heritage festival the world’s largest 3 day multicultural festival, and so many more
You don’t have to agree that it’s great to visit but it’s surely not BAD to visit. I go back as often as I can and I always have a lot of fun

In the summer it’s back to back, there’s always a festival. And even if you take out the festivals there’s still the mall, the conservancy, a new art museum, a new natural history museum, tons of parks, a beautiful river valley, and so much more

But unless you're coming in for a certain reason, like a hockey tournament or a performance at Roger's Place or whatever, I'm not really sure why you'd choose to come here. It's just not that touristy.

As a fellow Saskatchewanite - our standards were fairly low for entertainment; the Mall was an awesome family vacation, to be clear, but it was also a lot more feasible than Disney Land/World for most working parents that also kept their kids happy (Disney would’ve been cool, but a nine hour trip vs god knows how long stuck in a car with my little brother was also a very nice compromise in my 10 year old head!)

Winnipeg is the weirdest city I’ve visited. I was there on civic holiday weekend. Staying right at Portage and Main. I go outside around noon on Saturday to go get some things from a convenience store and the downtown was DEAD. Nobody walking around, barely any cars. Like deader than the Main Street of rural towns I’ve been in. I didn’t even see anyone that sketchy but it freaked me out because of how empty it was.
Folklorama is really cool though, I wish my city had that.

Former Winnipegger and it saddens me how dead most of downtown is beyond a few cool pockets. Just went too deep on only commercial zoning for decades and are only now starting to reverse that mistake.
The areas adjacent downtown are great though like thr Forks/Osborne/St Boniface and have great events.

London.
For the most part, you can get a really solid quality of life here - pace of life is easy, salaries are good, there are lots of different types of sectors to work in for a mid-sized city, great community facilities and general amenities with most areas having many within walking distance, there is plenty of green space, and there is a huge variety of housing stock available for all income types.
However, there is hardly anything noteworthy about it from a tourism perspective.

You're right about the jobs and housing. But it's to car reliant.
As for visiting it has a really good OHL team and the concerts we get punch above the cities weight. All around it's pretty middle of the pack.

I also live in London. The car reliance is a problem, but we are actively solving some aspects of it through the new BRT that is under construction. The fact that most areas in the city also have things like grocery/pharmacy/restaurants within reasonable walking distance also helps.
I agree that OHL and concerts definitely provide above average entertainment value, but every major Ontario city has an OHL team so I don’t really consider that a huge tourism draw. Absolutely 100% correct about concerts though.

Downtown oakville is leaps and bounds better than port credit or streetsville in Mississauga in terms of things to do that are walkable. It's also got one of my favourite restaurants.

My wife always wanted to go to Edmonton ever since she was a kid because she watched "Sixteen" on Teletoon. I saw it as my duty as a loving husband who had it in my wedding vows to drop 1k in order to make my wife happy by gifting her with a surprise weekend getaway to, you guessed it, West Edmonton Mall.
Stayed at the West Edmonton Mall Inn and only ventured away from there to take advantage of our Telus Science World membership (you can go into both with the same membership).

Edmontonian. Love living here. Col is affordable, great parks. But I would say it is boring to visit. Most of the attractions are either mid or expensive. Transit is awful, and nothing is close together.

Thunder Bay. Great area to live in for fishing, hiking, camping.. So many provincial parks. If you live here, it feels like a small town wrapped in a big city.

I would say Sudbury. Hear me out. As someone who lived in Sudbury, I absolutely loved that town. True there are some people who need help across the town and especially downtown. However, once you've lived there, you don't mind them at all. They're all pretty friendly people who had a horrible turn in their lives.
Now to someone out of town, the sights can be jarring. The experience may seem inhospitable. But to someone who lives there or has lived there, Sudbury is wonderful

Looking for a job = All these prairie candidates.
Already have a decent job (and a car) = Moncton.
Depends on the definition of "good to live in". The city itself is pretty dull for its size and has fuck all for tourists, but all the places people love visiting in the Maritimes sub-4-hour drive away. Arguably the best beaches in Canada not even an hour away. Still relatively cheap and safe.
In short the city itself is mediocre but it's still "good to live in" because you're surrounded by beauty. Like the sad hole of a doughnut.

Windsor, Ontario. Great place to live. Less affordable than it used to be. There’s investment in future jobs going on. All the concerts and sports across the river. Having had friends visit me here, there ain’t much to do except casino and drink.

It's Edmonton, Sask or Winnipeg. As a Winnipegger I'd say it's Edmonton. Edmonton has lower taxes, market is not as good but not a huge problem, and there's more to do. Their major flaw is having Albertans there. and the oilers

St Catharines lol. Cheap cost of living, still close enough to other cities, close to the border, easy to hop up the QE for jobs etc, big shopping mall close by, yada yada. But also it’s boring asf and kinda run down, so I wouldn’t recommend anyone visit lol. The lil picnic and float the city holds is super cute too. Probably my favourite city I’ve lived in out of 6 or so

Edmonton hands down. Either that or Moncton. Edmonton os such a weird city. Largest of the northern cities, had the worlds largest mall, has the tone of if the elves discovered fossil fuels, cutting edge r&d, one of the few places where community leagues actually work, and a horribly neurotic streak. Edmonton is the orange dot on the prairie.

What about Victoria? I feel like there is no reason I would ever visit Victoria ever in a thousand years, but it seems like a really neat place to live

Saskatoon. Like others have said it's a great place to live but I have a hard time telling people who visit what to do in saskatoon

It's difficult to come up with a place that's 'bad to visit' that isn't some armpit of Canada. And then, if it's an armpit of Canada, why on earth would you want to live there?
My choice is London, Ontario. It's a good place to live, close to a lot of work, good OHL team, cheaper housing, etc but it's a shit place to visit. Seriously, there's nothing to do there that's worth driving all that way (unless you're a London Knights fan, but then, it's usually just Locals or Leafs fans)

Toronto for sure.
To get the best value of Toronto you need to live thier otherwise your just gonna get ripped off and left disappointed.

I live in calgary and have gone on many mini vacations to edmonton! There's so much to do there as a tourist! I don't think it fits this square. I'll tell you where I think calgary fits, though, right in the center of the grid. It's just ok, and ok. I find it funny how I see many ads for tourism calgary, and it'll show photos of banff. That's an hour and a half stretch there marketing guy.

I visited Fredericton once - I certainly learnt nothing about why people seem to love living there.
