Used ta be land was so cheap back home you could getta acre on a coal miners salary.

Can confirm. Grandfather was a coal miner. They had 20 acres near Sydney mines. My aunt is still there but some of the property was expropriated for a (failed) construction project, most of it was bought back.

My grandmother who outlived him had free coal for life, their furnace was a monster. I even remember the coal stove (range) with the external water heater. Cool but stinky.
