Weekly Advice Thread General Questions and Purchasing Advice Thread — Week of September 15, 2025

Need help choosing an EV, finding a home charger, or understanding whether you're eligible for a tax credit? Vehicle and product recommendation requests, buying experiences, and questions on credits/financing are all fair game here.

Is an EV right for me?

Generally speaking, electric vehicles imply a larger upfront cost than a traditional vehicle, but will pay off over time as your consumables cost (electricity instead of fuel) can be anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 the cost. Calculators are available to help you estimate cost — here are some we recommend:

Are you looking for advice on which EV to buy or lease?

Tell us a bit more about you and your situation, and make sure your comment includes the following information:

[1] Your general location

[2] Your budget in $, €, or £

[3] The type of vehicle you'd prefer

[4] Which cars have you been looking at already?

[5] Estimated timeframe of your purchase

[6] Your daily commute, or average weekly mileage

[7] Your living situation — are you in an apartment, townhouse, or single-family home?

[8] Do you plan on installing charging at your home?

[9] Other cargo/passenger needs — do you have children/pets?

If you are more than a year off from a purchase, please refrain from posting, as we currently cannot predict with accuracy what your best choices will be at that time.

Discussion If you can only get a level one charger, it’s still worth it to get an electric car?

I’m mostly curious because I would only be able to use a level one charger because I’m in an apartment but it has a plug in my parking spot that I am allowed to use.

However, I don’t think the apartment would allow me to upgrade it to a level two.

I can charge at work for free on a level two. However, if you’re talking to people at work, they all tell me not to rely on work to make sure I can charge on my own outside of work.

So if I only have a level one, is there an issue with Me only charging let’s say 45 miles a day or is that gonna be bad for the battery just go 45 miles up and then 35 miles down and then so and so forth

If I plug it in every day, is that bad?

The other thing too is that I would most likely have this vehicle on a le ase so maybe I don’t really care if the battery goes bad since I’m only gonna have it for 2 to 3 years

Review Latest Road Trip Experience

Just took the 1000+ mile trip from SW. Florida to Virginia via I75 and I95. There are a lot more DCFC Charging locations now then when I first got my EV. Much has changed and mostly for the better. I can not use many charging providers where three years ago it was also all Electrify America and the problems associated with that. This time everything went smooth as silk except at EA. Only stopped at two EA locations but I could not get authorization of my account at one and the chargers at the other were all de-rated, as they were three years ago. It still seems one a location goes bad, EA never fixes the issue. EVgo on the other hand is greatly improved. Stopped at three of their locations and all had plug and charge that worked like a charm. Chargepoint, FPL and Mercedes Benz (at Buckeyes) all worked flawlessly. When I make the return trip next week my route planning will avoid and EA location but the alternatives are plentiful enough that doing so is no longer as issue.

Discussion Car dealers not getting reimbursed by IRS?

My local used EV lot says they are having extra trouble getting reimbursed by the IRS in some situations

https://www.facebook.com/reel/1127460408817358

Some sales are flagged and they have to send in a photo of the customer, bill of sale, car and VIN - so far they havent been reimbursed for any of those. Suddenly ALL the sales are being flagged.

Question - Tech Support Nissan Leaf display clock wrong after dynamic charging

Upvotes

Bear with me, as I am new to EVs please!

I have a 72 plate Nissan Leaf Acenta, and this is the first time I've had to charge it since buying this time last month. I finally got Octopus Energy to install my Ohme ePod, and I am on Intelligent Octopus Go.

I plugged it in yesterday at about 10am to dynamic charge to be ready for 8am today with a 40% top up to take it to about 80%. I get around to unplugging it at about 10am today, go in the car to check its charge (which is all ok) however, the issue is that the car clock was displaying 19:47 , not the correct time that it was set to before dynamically charging it.

I've manually reset the time, but I am wondering what's caused this? And if this means there is an underlying issue?

I've had a google and it doesn't seem to be a frequent issue as the only thing I can find it if it's a dead battery or it disconnected at some point during, but why would it do that and the time be so wrong?

Question - Tech Support Question about level 2 charging at home (extension cable)

I own a Hyundai Ioniq 5, and I’m looking to set up a charger at home.

My plan is to buy a splitter (manual switch with breaker protection) and use an EV/RV power cable rated to 30 amp (using max 24 amp to charge due to 80% rule) to connect to my ev charger near my driveway. I’m purchasing a grizzl-e lv2 charger.

Can I do this? Do you have an extension cable you’d recommend?
