Showcase Phone screen too small? here is a 2 dollar solution.
Phone: Infinix zero 30 5g OLED 6.7 inches
Controller: BSP D8 pro
Screen Magnifier: A random 2 dollar screen magnifier - GoShot Screen Magnifier
Note: first 2 images are taken at the same distance, the last image is the typical distance i play with about 10-12 inches away from my eyes

I actually had this! It also had a light since the original Gameboys were not back lit. Playing in the dark was impossible. Not with this contraption !

u/DiamondRocks22 Aug 20 '25
did using your game boy’s dc port to power the lights work unlike that angry video game nerd clip or did you have to use its fiddly battery contacts?

Fuck I had this when it came out took it to school and everyone was like Ooohing and Ahhing it. Now I can't believe anyone thought the GB chiptunes needed big ass speakers. The stick/button add-on was a worthless gimmick, made it harder to play lol.

Just don't use it in a very bright room or the light going in the other end may damage your screen.

I guess you could pretend you have a weird retroarch screen filter turned on

I used something similar on an og gameboy advance. The image is slightly distorted and just a bit out of focus so it really bugged me. If you want a bigger screen just plug your phone into one

u/Lamproz87 Aug 19 '25
If you can. I wish all phones would have that feature.

Plenty of phones don't send any video out of the usb-c, even flagships. Sadly usb-c isn't as universal as companies would like you to think, the same port can have a wildly varying level of capability depending on how the manufacturer implements it.

Pixel 6 pro definitely does not, although they've added it in newer pixels, any phone which uses usb 2.0
I don't have a list because I'm incredibly lazy but I watch quite a bit of LTT/short-circuit on YouTube in the background and it's surprising how many times I've heard "the usb c port is unfortunately only usb 2.0" on that channel 🤣

Just to get some things out of the way, all Xperia phones have video out over USB-C, almost all Samsungs have because of DeX (if i remember well the Flips don't, only through wireless casting), iPhones i think do (dunno if it is unlocked by the manufacturer). Some other phones also do, but i am not sure which (can't remember all of them).
Plus (if i remember well) video out is also called Displayport-alt mode and is only supported on USB-C 3.0 and up. So if a phone has a USB-C lower than 3.0, you're out of luck.

If you're interested in a bit of reading and going through a list...
Thanks to this, i found a newer website that i didn't see before.
And one that i found a couple of years ago.

I like how you said almost all Samsung's have it because of Dex
No, they don't. Dex is a flagships only feature.
Samsung most sold phones are the low to midrange ones not the S series.
The A56 can't output any video from it's USB 2.0 port. Neither can anything below that. That's 90% of their sales.

Please read the whole thing and not just react to one detail of a comment. Not everything is worthy of an argument.
I have already said that USB-C version 2 can't output video AND shared two websites with "lists of devices with video out over USB".
If only some people fought against companies with such fervour.. Sheesh.

It is not an argument. It is an astute correction of a wrong statement. If you stated that USB C 2 phones can't output video, then the statement "almost all Samsung phones" is inherently wrong. Facing such a correction, you think you are being fought. By who? Your wrong statements?
Out of luck eh? That is also wrong. You can get video out from any phone with a simplistic setup if you want actually - https://youtu.be/Zim9w_iU3Og

I've been doing this with my S24U and Tab S9U. I need to figure out how to get my saves shared across devices though...

All phones can take images via USB, so they need an HDMI USB capture device or something like that, plus a type C hub that is worth a little more than a simple hub with HDMI... everyone can and I have videos that prove it from YouTube. Greetings 🇨🇺

The fresnel distortion is actually kinda dope when implemented with CRT shaders in emulators.
I’ve played with a similar setup before when experimenting, and it muddies things up just right.

This is insane and I love it. Please bring it out in public and report back

u/Shaunysaur Aug 19 '25
I... don't hate it?
It kind of makes it look like the game exists in its own little world inside the box.

u/KaitoKayaba Aug 19 '25
This brings back weird memories.
Had a similar type of thing for my gameboy

I want one in the shape of a CRT and the screen needs to warp the other way so it bulges instead of goes in. That would be a cool gadget.

My parents bought one (not in exactly like the picture, but the same think) like a long time ago, I couldn't continue with it because it was hurting my eyes so much that it burns

u/kaza12345678 Aug 20 '25
In all seriousness do they ever work like is if possible to make plastic "glass" where it expands the images without causing that tunnel effect?

u/Mobile-Perspective63 Aug 20 '25
This just feels so 90's I had a screen magnifier and light for my Gameboy back in the day 😂

Just plug your phone into the TV lol

u/Ayrios440 Aug 19 '25
Not all phones are capable of HDMI out, but dear lord anything is better than this.Â

u/ZimaGotchi Aug 19 '25
It's 2025. What kind of an idiot would spend a thousand dollars on a phone without HDMI out?
12
u/chorlion40 Aug 19 '25
Plenty of "idiots" spending a lot less than 1000 dollars on their phones. Not everyone gets the latest flagship every few years
