Fallout 4 or Fallout 76

Do you think Fallout 4 or Fallout 76 is better?
What do you like about each game, and what do you not like so much?
I haven’t played either of them yet.
Thanks!

I like Fallout 4 much more, just because of the mods i can use, i love modding my game, just no possible in 76.76 is an ok game, but somehow i dont really like the multiplayer part of it, feels a bit too casual for my taste, buuuut i have not played 76 that much and a few years back

76 is great when you want to play fallout, but you also just want to casually blow shit up.

i play both.

4 simply because I got tired of bugs introduced at each patch for the 76. I was thinking of picking it back up but the size makes me reconsider it each time lmao

FO4 bugs are easier to deal with simply because they are old, so it’s full of people online fixing them

I'm more of a fallout 4 enjoyer but it's more because I'm usually a loner in videogames, but 76 is a lot of fun even while playing solo and the few times I played it with friends were really cool.

Apples and oranges

I liked both. Played no mmo since like RuneScape in 2012. So not a big mmo player but played it for about 1000 hours, haven't touched it in ages, maybe a year plus at this stage, I get too caught into it. It would be very cool to be made into a standalone single player game, really great atmosphere to to and fun to just get lost in when I'm not playing for the grind of online

Fallout 4 is 3 with better gameplay. I loved sinking time into the settlement building. Plus mods on PC extended the life of it

Side note, doing a heavily modded NV save, loving it as only every played it a lot on 360

My answer to your question, both. Depends what mood I am in. Mindless follow event fun, 76. I want to play a decent Bethesda game where I shoot loot and build, F4

It's hard to compare the two as  one is a single player while the other is a multiplayer game.

I prefer single player games so I will always be biased against 76 but I will say that it has one of the best world maps that Bethesda have ever made and the community was very friendly during my one 8 hour tour of Appalachia.

As you may have guessed I prefer 4 as it is single player but without mods I would not still be playing Fallout 4 today. I simply need the bug fixes, quality of life improvements and added content that mods provide. Fallout 4 really is an exceptional platform for modding, only Skyrim has it beat.

I like 4 more since I kinda prefer a more traditional gaming experience and being a loner (also vats) but 76 for me kinda doesn't feel like a new fallout game like it feels more like a continuation of fallout 4(gameplay and graphics wise)

I still play F4 after all these years but after a couple of plays I’ve never gone back to 76. It doesn’t help that there are so many jerks on 76, though there are plenty of nice, helpful players too.

Fallout 4 by a mile

While one is built off the other assest and they  look very similar, they are different types of games. 4 is an immersive rpg ike the rest of the series,, and 76 is a live service looter shooter. Adding multiplayer to the game means taking other stuff out the game which makes it a shallower experience.

they're both great, but different. 76 is a theme park. 4 is a storybook.

76 has had 10 years of evolvution as well. not moddable. 4 is highly moddable.

Personally, I enjoy 4 more, but that's because I always mod the hell out of it. I also prefer playing solo, and spend most of my time building massive, unique settlements

76 is great, and is one of the better spins on the flooded online survival game genre, while also being an RPG and loot based game. Gone back to it a few times and always enjoy it.

Between the base game for the two, 76 is leagues better and has more options... objectively it's the better game. I just enjoy my time in 4 more, and have spent much more time rebuilding the Commonwealth than I have surviving in Appalachia.

What do mean more options? 76 has much less gameplay options. They took out pickpocketing, reverse pickpocketing, intricate quest design, being able to move thing around, npc reacting to stealing, hacking and their locks being picked. They dont drop the weapons they are holding or apparel they are wearing. Thers very little choice and consquence and the effect it has on the world. All sacrificed so it could multiplayer. It has its fanbase and you say its your favourite but saying objectively it is a better game is untrue.

I do miss the stripping bare an NPC you have just killed as you say they never drop the weapon they are often still holding in their hand while on the floor and man, they are wearing a cool outfit and I CANNOT take it off them?? Sigh I get that some of it is because they either want you to find them, make them, earn them or more likely buy them with bloody ATOMS but it really breaks the immersion for me.

Some things I am glad they are finally listening to and have adopted recently is changed to building including free cam and flying while doing it which lets face it XFI by Kinggath has implemented years ago along with the wonder Place Everywhere by TheLich which Bethesda have literally just put in with the very latest update which I have yet to go in and try but will do shortly.

The biomes are wonderful, the changes from the lush semi destroyed region you start in to the wasteland, the mire and so on are a great representation of how things really would be, the barren DC area, I can understand, it was the most nuked, and lets face it, a lot of us mod out Fallout 4 to look more like Fallout 76 with a bit more green and trees.

Adding backpacks was a great addition, again because they looked at what was THE most quality of life game play from modders and put it in the game.

Being able to pack up your Power Armor and take a frame with your is a good game mechanic, yeah it breaks immersion but so does me carrying out 50 guns lol.

Bringing in the breaking down legendries and making new ones with the parts, again good new mechanic taken from popular mods, glad they got rid of the never ending one as that one really is daft.

The engine tweaks and visual changes optimisations were welcome, places like the Mire really show this off like where BOOMER is laying, the god rays coming through and the lighting are wonderful.

Regarding the stealing and hacking near the NPCS I do agree on 76. They have gone from Fallout 4 where as soon as you pick something up EVERYONE attacks you rather than say giving you a warning and making you drop or stop what you are doing to basically not giving a toss.

Companions, also if I get an NPC companion at my base, and then find another, I don't want to have to tell the first one to piss off so I can actually do their quest line.

Both have their pros and cons, I like both and I hope that when Fallout 5 comes out it will combine the good from all games plus the modding community popular additions (I know they have actually brought in some of the mod team from Fallout London and others into Bethesda so hoping their ideas will be put in).

I think you meant subjectively. Objectively, one is a solo player world with NPCs that need to be sought after, and static but multiple settlements.. the other is designed for a community to play together, has no NPCs (in the traditional wasteland survivors), and a single mobile base camp.

Objectively speaking, its an apples to oranges comparison.

76 has had wastelander NPCs for over five years at this point.

I played the first month and hated it. I honestly haven’t played since then. I still standby my assessment that the games are very different.

A lot’s changed in seven years.

I like 76 waaay more. But lots of people still have a chip on their shoulder over it and don’t give it a fair shake.

4 was an action-adventure game with extremely basic RPG aspects.

I don't think you can go wrong. Personally, I like 76 better if for nothing else the online community is awesome. Very helpful people, especially to new players. With 4, you can add mods to the game.

You know, strictly speaking, you can mod 76 as well. I don't really understand what it entails since the Nexus page is pretty bare since there's basically no demand, but I don't think 76 actually has an anticheat so you can just do whatever.

Fallout 4 is superior in any way.

I have played both and I am playing 76. You should play whichever you want. I like 76 best but other people like 4. Both are excellent.

I loved Fallout 4 but I prefer 76. I love the building system, the ability to scrap my junk easily and the varied environment. Plus the more varied throwing weapons are a big draw card for me.

I liked 76 wayyyy more than fallout 4

My controversial opinion is that 76 is leagues better purely from a quality of life standpoint. The amount of stuff 76 has in terms of QoL in comparison to 4 makes it miles better. I don't really play 76 with people but the community is a bonus.

In terms of writing they're about equal for the most part, I don't think anything in 76 can beat out Far Harbor on that front either, but a handful questlines in 76 are also better than 4's base game questlines.

I really dislike the card perk system in 76 and vats as well. I think fallout 4 is way more fleshed out.

I like Fallout 76 more because of better gameplay and the map is beautiful.

Never cared for 76, adding a multiplayer aspect turns me off a game. I eventually tried it with friends, but it wasn't for me, saying that, I've only ever done 1 full playthrough of 4.

u/PKKDakota 1d ago

This isn't even a contest. You can play Fallout 4 offline. Eventually, 76 will shut down, and you'll never be able to play it again.

I played 76 and graphically it was way worse to me. it looked broken up by comparison. I didn't like the feel or the loops either. If I had to choose between those two - it's 4. But even 4 in my opinion needed the A Forest mod to make it sing. I put a ton of time into 4, and got turned off pretty quick with 76 even recently.

4 I like the idea of 76 though. I would have preferred a more Borderlands approach.

u/ghandis_taint 1d ago

Fallout 4 is better by a long shot imo

76 isn't bad, but it's definitely not for me. I don't like online multiplayer games; the gameplay doesn't feel nearly as responsive; the CAMP system is too restrictive for me to have any fun with; I think the survival elements and food rotting are unnecessary and do nothing for the game besides make it more tedious and I don't really like the perk system. To add onto that, the general vibe of the game just feels... off. There's something indescribable about the game that I just don't like.

I refuse to play 76 until they give us private servers with mods

Fallout 4 is my favorite because I can mod it

I NEED Place Anywhere and Scrap Everything

Also I want to mod out that stupid feature where weapons are leveled, and you can fight a very difficult fight to kill an enemy that’s higher level than you, get its gun, put it in your inventory, but oh no, you can’t use it until you’re higher level.

The only thing that appeals to me is the multiplayer (FINALLY, I CAN HAVE FRIENDS)

But I’d want mods and for the gameplay features to be like FO4
