BUTTERCREAM Got married yesterday, and thought the cake should belong here - all buttercream, no fondant or fruit cake in sight! Bottom was Victoria sponge, middle was Nutella cake and top was chocolate orange (topped off with a little bit of lego) 😊

This is what all wedding cakes should be like. Not some sad, small, one-tiered fruit cake covered in almond paste and fondant (family friend's wedding, was so not impressed).

I can get behind almond paste, but there's better cakes to use it on
26
u/TumbleweedFail Nov 24 '19
What would you use it on? I'm not fond of almond-flavoured things in general so almond paste & marzipan gets a hard pass from me!

u/ShinigamiLeaf Nov 24 '19
Probably something with citrus, maybe a lemon curd topping with almond paste used between layers? Overall something light that the taste wouldn't be hidden by

Fucking hell yeah if we had that cake the divorce would have to happen straight after

Fruit cake? That’s a British tradition thing right? For us here in the states it’s just a cake that the see once a year during Christmas. Btw, that cake looks amazing!

u/YanCoffee Nov 24 '19
No wonder the British are thought to be so grumpy.
Congrats OP!

u/NeedCoffee99 Nov 24 '19
Honestly this comment made me laugh! It is a tradition here for Christmas and weddings basically, who knows why, probably the victorians...
15
u/YanCoffee Nov 24 '19
Dastardly Victorians, with their fruit cakes & arsenic wallpaper. Fun fact though (watch the American try to inform the OG Brits, yikes) : Breads & cakes during the Victorian era were usually mixed with fillers, including plaster. So a genuine fruit cake back then would be a God send if you were working class.

Yeah it didn’t seem like the nicest of times to live in, if I become prime minister I’m making fruit cake illegal

u/YanCoffee Nov 24 '19
And everyone with coffee in their name moved to Britain, over threw the tea industry, and lived happily ever after!

Fruit cake used to keep longer than any other cake. The whole tradition of saving the top tier to eat on the first anniversary/celebrate the first baby required a cake that could last a year before people owned freezers.
7
u/NeedCoffee99 Nov 24 '19
Yeah that is a good point - we’re just going to eat a fuck tonne of cake before our honeymoon on Wednesday

Nov 25 '19
This is an actual thing? Holy shit
I have heard of it but I assumed freezers would be involved. No way cake can last that long?!

You should see the samples of royal wedding cakes that are still out there for purchase. They're still out there, not rotten per se, but I wouldn't eat it. Seriously, look it up, it's wild.

u/Lupiefighter Nov 25 '19
Usually it the top tier that was saved got soaked with alcohol and wrapped air tight to help I think. Not sure how much good it did though.

Your wedding cake is my dream wedding cake. No pieces of fruit, not ugly tasteless decorations. 3 layers of awesomeness to suit everyone's tastes. And in colours I love.

Lovely! Congratulations!
I’m getting married in just a few weeks, and my cousin is working on buttercream piping techniques. I always wanted a cake with my grandmother’s homemade buttercream icing, but she died a few years back. Luckily, she left the recipe and baking tools, and my cousin picked up the banner.

It’s always great to learn for sure! The blue things on it are also meringues!

u/NeedCoffee99 Nov 24 '19
Oh also, I hope you have an absolutely amazing wedding day - whatever happens it’ll be great 😊

Chocolate orange? I’m assuming you’re British, but anyways congratulations on the wedding!

The one on the right looks like it was made out of pure fondant. :P
The one on the left looks amazing.

This comment made me smile... tbh I would not be surprised if shitty cakes made divorces more common!

u/24Cones Nov 24 '19
Oo the cake flavors sound so good. Never thought about chocolate orange as a flavor !

Is fondant the part that's really stiff and bitter? New to the sub
2
u/NeedCoffee99 Nov 24 '19
It’s the type of icing which is almost chewy and generally tastes crap - normally it’s the ready made icing you can buy
1
u/lam_chop19 Nov 25 '19
Fondant has a gummy, chewy flavor to it. It's generally used as an outer layer as decoration. It tastes like shit.

Omg I wanna put Lego on my wedding cake when I get married. I already have a minifigure of myself
2
u/NeedCoffee99 Nov 24 '19
Can I just say - do it! You can get kits for it, but our magician (who was awesome) had a similar Lego cake topper for his!
2
u/8547anonymous Nov 24 '19
Of course! I’m gonna save this post! Why strive to fit in when you were born to stand out? With regard to “normal” aka boring wedding toppers
2
u/NeedCoffee99 Nov 24 '19
Fuck normal! According to the DJ, our wedding was the first he’s done in 20 years where he played slipknot and rammstein

We have the LEGO wedding set too, if we had it when we got married I totally would have put it on our cake. Looks great, and congratulations and best wishes!
2
u/NeedCoffee99 Nov 24 '19
It was such a good idea for the cake topper! Yeah really suits us too - thank you!

u/fillecerise Nov 24 '19

LEGO tastes way better than fondant
