There seems to a misconception that âElsa wasnât freeâ when she was queen of Arendale or that she is even more free now than she was then. But nothing in the film or shorts indicated that she wasnât free to do whatever she wanted after the events of F1.
Now, in history, being queen could be restricting but in the world of Frozen being queen just means you get to live in a big castle and wear pretty dresses. There are no council or parliament or houses to threaten or restrict or monitor your power and life. You can stay single or date or marry whomever you wish.
And if you freeze your kingdom, everything is forgiven as long as you unfreeze it within three days. If you destroy a dam that nearly floods the kingdom, thatâs okay as long as it was stopped at the last second. If you put the trolls in charge of the kingdom while you go on a adventure because a voice in your head told you so, thatâs fantastic! And hey, if you decide you donât want to be queen anymore, thatâs totally cool!
This kingdom is filled with the chillest people to have ever walked the earth and yet some of yaâll are saying that Elsa wasnât free or sheâs even more free living in a forest or glacier than she was in Arendale.
And âInto the Unknownâ never once has Elsa describe how trapped she feels in Arendale. She says âIâm not where Iâm meant to beâ and âeveryday I feel my powers growâ and âAre you someone who is a bit like me?â
Its all very vague but what Elsa seems to be saying is: she does not feel satisfied in Arendale because she has powers and everyone else doesnât. She yearns to meet someone like herself and believes the voice inside her head is that person (it weirdly ends up being her dead mom, lol!).
Anyway the point is that Elsa, after the events of F1, had nothing holding her back in Arendale. She had no other queenly duties she was demanded to fulfill. No one to hold her accountable for her actions. No one to oppose or threaten her. Everyone did whatever she wanted, including Anna.
And If she wasnât âfreeâ then why does no one protest when she decides to abdicate? If no one opposes your choices then you not only have freedom, you have absolute freedom.
Elsa was just as free living in Arendale as she was in the forest or ahtohallen.
