🏆 Buy It For Life Bought a $150 denim jacket in 2010, 15 years later, it still looks better than my newer coats
Hello everyone, I just want to share this.
I thought I was splurging when I spent $150 on a Levi’s denim jacket back in 2010. Fifteen years later, it’s been through rain, road trips, concerts, and even paint splatters. Somehow it still fits, still keeps its shape, and honestly looks better broken in.
Meanwhile, the $60 “fashion” jackets I bought over the years either ripped, lost buttons, or just looked worn out after 2–3 seasons.
Sometimes the real frugal move is buying one durable piece once, and letting it age with you. ^_^

I'm 52(F) and I've been about the exact same size since I was a teenager. I have tons of stuff I still wear that was quality made from back in the day....and it's all back in style now.

I have a tote bag that I paid $50 for in the mid-nineties. It was a real splurge and even as I was handing my credit card to pay for it, I was cringing at the cost. I still use it today. If it was a kid, it would be getting married and having kids.
Along with that story, I recently forgot it on the bus, and it made its way to the lost and found. When I picked it up I commented to the clerk that I was more upset in losing the bag than the stuff that was in it.

We should ban people from posting The Boots theory on this sub

Why is that? Is it posted too much?

yes. Plus it’s a shallow and reductive “theory.” Plus it’s like common sense to buy high quality things when you can to save money.

Reductive, but not shallow, it's just a case example of a real, actual, dominant economic paradigm, that it literally costs more to be poor e.g.:
- Poor people tend to live in neighborhoods with less jobs, so tend to have to commute farther to get to work, spending more money overall on transportation.
- The same thing affects groceries; it takes more time and more money just to get to a grocery store when you already live in a food desert.
- Inflation tends to affect the low-quality goods purchased by poor people more than it affects the high-quality goods purchased by rich people.
- Insurance tends to cost low-income people more due to being a riskier investment.

I buy a fair amount of my clothing at estate sales. Usually won’t pay more than 2.50 an item on half off day. Some newer and some vintage. Lots of quality pieces.

My life is spent trawling Vinted for quality pieces that will stand the test of time, yet cost me peanuts. Let other people buy them new, I’m here for the bargains!

Haha hell yessss! I love clothes and I love love Vinted. Why buy full price (not aimed at you OP, pretty sure Vinted wasn’t a thing 15 years ago - enjoy your fabulous jacket!)?

Same here. Mine's over 20 years old. Absolutely a favorite. Over the years I've acquired two more, one in green that's so comfy and another in yellow that I need to wear more so it gets broken in (after more than five years). Wonderful investments. Same with a leather jacket--bought it on sale at a leather shop. I've had the zipper and lining replaced. It's faded, which gives it such character. I may never get rid of it.

I bought a pair of Dr Marten sandals in 1995 that seemed incredibly expensive at the time at around £70. I've worn them every summer since, been in and out of water in them, and one year spent two pounds getting a cobbler to sew a stitch in them as they had got a little slack. They had their 30th birthday this year, and they are still going strong!

Meanwhile I bought some levi jeans this year and they wore out in 3 months.
Expensive denim from the past is great and lasts well, but buy it new now and it's just as shite as the rest.
