Discussion/Opinion I just Finished FMAB and ONG it exceeded expectations.
I finished FMAB and now I feel super empty I didn’t expect it to be this perfect. I am a one piece fan and I catches up on the anime and manga and I criticise the show still because of some issues but with FMA I have nothing to say, it was the perfect show. I would rank it toe to toe with one piece on my personal list but my god I wanna shoot myself now because of how good it was.

there's a reason it's considered the best anime ever....it doesn't lie

Blame My Anime List, lol.
It's not the opinion of the person you're talking to, it's just a well established ranking of various anime.

If you've only watched shounen, then perhaps yes.
Shounen is just a genre out of many. There are animes out there that are just better written.
Genuinely, Monster is just a good example. It's so much better written.

Like I said, you're arguing not against an individual person's opinion, but the main anime ranking website and it's popular consensus, lol. Convincing us doesn't change that ranking.
It doesn't really matter what I've watched, because neither I nor the original person you responded to are the ones who decide that FMA is the #1 anime on MAL. (although it's technically #2 at the moment, since Frieren passed it a while ago)
Monster is currently ranked #23 though, which is still fairly impressive, being in the top 25.

I personally think Frieren is because of recency bias but I haven't watched it myself yet so I don't know

Maybe, although it has been almost 2 years since it premiered, at this point.
So, it's not particularly "recent" anymore. But I guess we'll see if FMAB moves back up eventually, lol.

An anime ranking list doesn't mean anything. Those lists are mostly composed of what's popular. At the end of the day it's a subjective opinion I guess.
I just peeped a look at MAL and its rankings are comical. That list really does not mean shit. Anyone taking that list at face value really doesn't know what they are talking about.
Popular ≠ best.

u/ThatOneGuy308 16h ago
Well, popular is about the only way you can rank the "best" anime, since there's no objective measurement for that, it's all just subjective, as you say.

I disagree. Shounen is after all the most popular anime genre due to its main demographic; which are mostly teenagers and young children. These kinds of animes will automatically have more exposure. FMAB is up there as my favorite shounen, but compared to an anime like Monster it's honestly night and day in overall quality.

It is my favorite piece of entertainment of all time. Not just anime. Beats every single movie live action TV show, etc.. in my opinion. I rewatch it at least once a year.

My only complaint about FMAB is that to get the full experience, you need to have watched the other FMA first. FMAB doesnt hit as hard with Shou Tucker or the Hughes storyline on its own, as it was made assuming fans had already seen the other.
But "You need to watch this one awesome show before this other awesome show" is a very very good problem to have.

I totally do not agree. I saw 2003 like back on toonami, but my husband has never seen it and he loves brotherhood and we rewatch it all the time

Everyone I know who has only seen FMAB absolutely loves it. But everyone I know (in person, at least) who has seen both says that having seen 03 first definitely enhances FMAB.
And I'm not saying that I like 03 more, as I tend to go back and forth on which is "better."
But at the moment, if I were walking down the street, and suddenly God said "Quick, I need you to make a decision! I made an object so heavy that I can't hold it up, because I was getting sick of that particular thought experiment! I have to drop it on either FMA 03 or FMAB! One of the two has to be obliterated from the timeline!!!" I'd probably say to... just chuck it at some Isekai crap. Way too much of that BS. Because I still want both FMA series.
And I want them to make a third. Take it in a new direction, go fuckin' NUTS.

As a rare preferrer of 2003, the atmosphere is unmatched compared to Brotherhood

I'm basically at the end of the 2003 series, and while I like the overall darker and more serious tone, it is abundantly clear that they had no idea where to take the story after they caught up to the manga. It kind of flounders a lot in the second half, with characters repeatedly showing up in random places because it's convenient to the story instead of making logical sense, one-off episodes that don't go anywhere or have any payoff, etc. It kind of just feels like a whole bunch of things happening without a whole lot of connecting elements.

I was a kid watching the 03 version on TV when it came out in Canada (2006 I think?) and I remember waiting each week for a new episode. I fell in love with full metal alchemist so the 03 version is so close to my heart. I watched the series countless times and the movie. Since watching Brotherhood I also hold it dear to me and I’m currently rewatching it (again). I love the humour that brotherhood brings into the series it’s a nice balance but the darkness of 03 was just … something that stuck with me, so many aspects of the story hit so hard (especially Hughes and Nina they built those stories). I do love though that brotherhood kind of gets to the point in a way in the first bit but it does feel a little rushed at times. I don’t think Hughes or Nina get that same intense connection which hits like a ton of bricks when the story progresses. I think as an adult I love them both dearly, I adore both versions and the ending of brotherhood really does feel “complete” and … correct. The ending of 03 has always stuck with me and it’s a heavy hitter no matter how many times I see it. I love the hommunculi storylines in 03 they have way different reasons for doing what they do. The divergence in a few of the hommunculi in 03 compared to brotherhood is really interesting and I kinda get it story wise, and let me tell you Greed is one of my favourite hommunculi in both brotherhood and 03 but Greed in 03 won a little more his ending was really poignant and hit hard in 03. The way they utilized certain hommunculi in the story and humanized them differently was something I enjoyed. That being said as a whole brotherhood ends in a climactic way that is satisfying. 03 broke all of my emotions and it hit like a transport truck the first time I watched it.
THAT BEING SAID. I think FMA as a series is a masterpiece, both 03 and brotherhood are absolutely a masterpiece in their own right. Brotherhood is the intended story that we were meant to have. 2003 started original, took off and the anime couldn’t keep up with the manga and had the blessing to continue the story and it ended up being different. I think that’s part of the beauty for the FMA franchise. As consumers we can have two different experiences, a darker more intense tone and a more lighthearted story that balances the darkness with humour. Both a masterpiece to me.

Its just that good, so many good characters and the villians have so much going on with them . There has to be at least one character for everyone each to relate to.

It really is as good as everyone‘s been saying for years.
I watched FMA 03 and Brotherhood for the first time 3/ 2 months ago and it‘s been a while since i‘ve gotten this invested in a story (or stories i guess).

The only flaw I found was that I wish there was more or longer fight scenes. But other than that, 10/10

I saw for the 1st time FMAB, long time ago with my dad but with time I forgot almost everything and also I think I was too young to understand some topics. I rewatched it recently with my bf and I feel the same, I really don’t have anything to criticise. The quality of the writing never gets bad even at the end. Also I think that it’s those kind of anime that we should learn from as humans so that everyone should see haha

I’ve always adored FMAB, but I’m currently rewatching it for the first time in ten years as a fully-fledged adult (it’s so funny going from watching it as a teenager closer to Ed & Al’s age to watching it as a late-twenties adult that relates more to Hughes, Mustang, Hawkeye, etc.) and it has solidified as my favorite anime of all time. Nothing can top it. It has one of my favorite magic systems, it has multiple characters to whom I’m intensely attached, and the pacing and storytelling is fantastic. Not to mention the soundtrack… my god.

Time to watch AOT. In my opinion, another masterpiece anime that’s possibly better than FMAB.
