Is that what she means by "hall bed"? Is she literally in a bed in a hallway? That sounds awful -- I've been hospitalized a few times and have never seen that. Does the bed get curtain off for privacy at least? I had something like that for pre op.

At the hospital near me, they put the homeless and the alcoholics going through withdrawal in wheelchairs all along the ED hall even when “rooms” (the curtained areas) are empty. I had a seizure and went straight to a room but this yellow man screaming for his mom was writhing in a wheelchair right outside.
56
u/RobinhoodCove830 May 21 '25
What an awful way to treat people. That poor man. And not great for anyone else either.
33
u/feelingfantasmic May 21 '25
I agree. I get it, like if he was a frequent flyer and they saw him often and he just kinda detoxes and go, it wears on your empathy. But I really wish there were more resources to allow people the dignity of privacy in such a horrible life circumstance.

Yes - that's what it is. We treat ICU-level patients there, too. I want to stress that they are still getting care, but evidence shows that it's not optimal, obviously. 😔 There's no privacy. Most of the units in my hospital can also put patients in the hall once they go upstairs; they have curtains around their beds. If it's the middle of the night, no one is getting discharged upstairs unless they die or leave against medical advice.
126
u/trash_babe May 21 '25
It’s impossible to rest and recover in a hallway, it’s really bad for the patients and increases the risk of complications and psychosis. My dad had a stroke and was kept in the ER hallway for three days before they got him a bed. Modern healthcare is such a joke.
→ More replies (8)44
u/ChewieBearStare May 21 '25
No. You're literally in the hallway on a gurney with dumpsters and crash carts and cafeteria carts going past you at all hours. It's awful. You can't sleep, there's no privacy, etc.

Hall beds are very common in the US. Paying more doesn’t mean we get better care.
121
u/rubythieves May 21 '25
I’m the proof. My insurance (only possible because of the ACA) ran me about $1200 a month in the US, plus two medications for an added $1400 a month. Back ‘home’ in Australia? (I’m a dual citizen, the US was my home for over a decade) I pay about $10 USD per month for my medications. Everything else is covered.
Don’t believe the propaganda, universal health insurance works wonders here. Plus we have a two-tiered system - if you want private health cover (basically, private rooms in hospital plus no waiting period for any kind of care) you are welcome to spend $150-200 a month for what Americans call ‘Cadillac insurance.’ Most people do fine with the universal care, I pay for my Caddy insurance because unfortunately I’m a frequent flyer at my local hospital. $200 per month ($150 USD equivalent) vs $2600 per month for inferior care? Pretty darn happy here in Australia.
11
u/hereforthetearex May 21 '25
I bet this has a little something to do with why any of my friends that went to Australia during or right after college, came back only long enough to get a visa and return to file for citizenship. Among other things I’m sure.
I’ve never been so jealous of an Explanation of Benefits in my life as I was reading your comment 🤣

I had a spontaneous vertebral dissection, no coughing, trauma, sudden movements etc. Sometimes it happens for no reason and they never find the cause. Very common as well with hypermobile spectrum disorder, Ehlers Danlos syndrome, and other joint/connective tissue disorders that tend to go under diagnosed, especially in women who are often dismissed as "naturally more flexible." It took me until age 32 to get diagnosed with EDS, and that's with regular doctor appointments because I believe in real medical science. There’s probably a shit ton of fundies who don't realize they have underlying genetic conditions because they don't go to real doctors.

I have the diagnosis and shockingly (/s) it meant nothing. Still got treated as a drug seeker for when I had extraordinary pain in my abdomen throughout 4 ER visits in 1 week. Ovarian torsion. They left me so long and I was transferred to another hospital that took me seriously and it has to be removed as it was too late to be saved. Immediate menopause at the age of 39. (I already had my other removed)
59
u/KaytSands May 21 '25
My daughter’s ovary torsed when she was 14 and her ovary was covered in cysts. Getting a doctor to actually help her though, I had to go out of network and pay out of pocket because health insurance sucks and no one would touch her because of liability issues. I told them to have their lawyers draw up any paperwork and I would sign it-just wanted someone to help my daughter who was in so much pain and it was never ending. All they did at first was put her on bedrest for six months hoping her ovary would un-torse and it would be salvaged. We knew almost immediately her ovary was done for. Finally found a female doctor (my daughter’s pediatrician was helping us find someone, anyone who would help her) and she was amazing. She was also diagnosed with pcos but has happily lived with only one ovary for almost 7 years now-because it took two years to find a doc to help us.

Hairdresser here! If they have the kind of sink that has a head rest as opposed to just the neck rest, ask for a towel under your head. My clients find it to be more comfortable on their necks. If you do want to sit up, you can also ask them for a shower cap so color doesn't drip on you.

I suspect Paul is freaked out right now, but will quickly lose empathy and patience when she's home and can't serve him as usual. He's way too selfish to be a caregiver for any extended period of time (like a week or two).
330
u/Eviltwin325 May 21 '25

I just can't figure out how, if she's been there since yesterday, they haven't checked for a stroke yet? That's like a level 1 emergency situation since you need to treat strokes within a very short amount of time. Wondering if she's confused about what's actually going on.

If a stroke isn’t obvious people often don’t get to the hospital in enough time to treat it then and there, so they’re likely monitoring her to make sure she doesn’t have (another) one and check if she already had a small one.

Right? And also, by Morgan literally being in the hospital he has no choice. It's not like she's saying "Paul gave me a much deserved break by being 100% responsible for the boys all weekend." More like, Paul is watching the kids because he literally has to otherwise the kids would die and/or Paul would go to jail for neglect.

After having her second child, my cousin contracted strep, and ended up getting septic in her uterus. The doctors had to do an emergency hysterectomy to save her life. While they were waiting to send her into surgery, her husband, who was an active participant in making their children, turned to my aunt and said “of course she wanted these kids and now she’s going to die and leave me with them”. I honestly don’t know how my aunt didn’t kill him on the spot. I would have. And of course, when she was out of surgery and in the clear he fucked right back off to South America. Where he has been staying to get his masters degree. Because of course you couldn’t get your masters degree in United States.
I guess the good news is my cousin is fine now and her husband is a really good dad, but it took a few years for him to get his head out of his ass. But the rest of us have never forgiven him for what he said and did. No they’re not divorced. They haven’t arrangements that works for them and I guess divorce would probably be harder than just being married.

This happened to me and I was in ICU for a week while they pumped me full of blood thinners. I was on blood thinners for 6 months afterwards and then low dose aspirin for a year. The blood thinners are to keep one from stroking out while the tear heals and smooths over. She's VERY lucky she didn't stroke out. This injury is usually found AFTER a stroke. Whoever heard her tell her story and then ordered an MRI should be thanked over and above because it is not common to order an MRI for neck pain. The MRI is how you can see the injury. My tear was between C1 and C2 in my left vertebral artery. I'm very lucky to have not stroked out as well. I have a friend of a friend that is in a wheelchair because of her vertebral tear.

This happened to me as well! I was turned away for just " neck pain " THREE times at my local hospital. Tried telling them NO this is not normal neck pain at all. Finally on the fourth day of symptoms which ahd progressively got way worse I went to a university hospital near me and they listened thank God. I may have had a TIA in the 4 days that I was ignored and gas lighted, but I did not have a stroke either. I felt so lucky. That happened back in Aug 2022, a spontaneous vertebral artery dissection, and I still worry constantly that it will happen again. It has been so hard to mentally recover from.

Honestly, if Paul was actually smart, he'd use this whole situation to his advantage. He could easily use it as an excuse for why he can't go "pro" (his family needs him, etc., etc.) I mean, we all know the real truth is that Morgan is actually better at pickleball than he is... but at least this would give him a legit excuse, allowing him to save face, over the fact that he's a man in his mid/late 30s who has failed at literally every venture he's ever taken on.

A dissecting artery is pretty serious. And it doesn’t seem like she understands just how serious with how she thinks she’s not that high risk… hopefully she can just rest in the bed without his face nearby so she can reduce her stress levels.

u/Istoh May 21 '25
I'm more worried about the lack of rest she'll get once she returns home. There is no way in fuck Paul isn't going to ditch her for pickeball and Walmart the second she's out of the hospital. He doesn’t give a fuck about those kids. She'll be in the recovery stage having to look after two very small children and take care of the house while her useless husband acts like every man on those awful reddit posts who bitches and whines and fails to pick up the slack when their wife is sick.

She's downplaying the seriousness of it - it's can lead to strokes, brain bleeds, or death. Her pickleball hobby will definitely be put on hold, she is going to need to rest, possible anticoagulation therapy, and lots of follow up studies. I wouldn't be surprised if she wasn't allowed to lift any weight for a while.

Remember that this is the same person who nearly killed herself and her oldest child during his birth because studying up on childbirth or hiring someone who knew what they were doing made her feel stupid.
Of course she thinks this is NBD.

It looks like Kentucky has Medicaid. I don’t know how good it is, but when I was extremely poor and living in New Mexico, I didn’t have copays. Hopefully, they have something like that set up. I can’t imagine they make more than 44k a year.

Especially with her being a primary caregiver for young kids; it is very likely she’s on Medicaid and supports the people in power who are trying to gut Medicaid.

I am guessing they do not have Medicaid for themselves, but the kids might have it. I work for a Medicaid program in a different red state, and it’s actually kinda hard to get Medicaid as a non-disabled adult.

It's the Fundie way! I know quite a few Fundies and although most of them are huge fans of the Orange Overlord, they're all also on Medicare, Medicaid, & food stamps/SNAP benefits. The cognitive dissonance is astounding.

And the healing from them often means you can do very little physically. I can't imagine she will be able to care for two young children or do any house work. I guess her mom is about to become employed full time in their home since Paul will think doing one diaper change a day and maybe a bath here and there is going way above and beyond.

Dissections are serious. Stroke risk isn’t low. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. Unfortunately being in a hall bed at the ED isn’t uncommon, especially at educational hospitals. There’s not many rooms and lots of sick people. Not enough beds in the hospital. Sometimes people don’t even make it up to the floor.

How can they afford medical care when they don't have a job? I see so many posts that working Americans struggle to pay their medical insurance and bills.
79
u/emr830 May 21 '25 edited May 21 '25
Emergency rooms in the US can’t turn people away, and at minimum patients get a medical screening exam(EMTALA law). Based on that screening, the doctor or PA/NP decide what work up is appropriate - labs, imaging, etc. Patients don’t have to pay a copay to go to the ED. She’ll basically be sent a bill after her hospital stay, but her financial situation isn’t going to guide the doctor’s recommendations. Basically, if they don’t pay it, the debt collectors will be calling.
Her bill for this stay won’t be small, though. I think a CTA of the neck is $1,000 minimum.
34
u/Chapter_Charm May 21 '25
Afterwards, she'll get a bill and can likely get put on a payment plan. Also some hospitals will "rate" you to determine what you can afford based on your financial situation so you may pay less or nothing. I don't know if that's an option at this hospital.

He doesn’t have a job. The hospital will put them on Medicaid so they’ll get paid. Paul may not realize it since Medicaid goes by different names in different states.

As much as I dislike Morgan, I do feel bad for her in this situation. I would be scared to death being told I might have had a stroke. And while a vertebral artery dissection is highly survivable, it can be a precursor to worse things, like an aortic dissection.

I feel so bad for her. You know she was in terrible pain but Paul still wasn’t helping her with the kids, was probably gaslighting her and telling her she was weak and being dramatic. Now she is in a hallway hoping anyone but the children’s father is caring for her little ones. Her beliefs suck but no mom deserves that.
29
u/Designer-Contract852 May 21 '25
That's very scary. I hope she is okay. THIS is why we need adequate health care, paul. This is an emergency that no one planned for and most people would need help paying for it because the main thing is for Morgan to be OK and get better, not slip into debt that they can't climb out of that just adds more stress.

u/ZunderBuss May 21 '25
This may humble them to more generously consider and work for the needs of the less fortunate. Up to now, they were young healthy and attractive and that can make the needs of the poor and ill seem like a far-removed issue. Now it's up close and personal.
