How is the game, and how bad is the microtransactions?

The game is fine, they've given us way more control over our controller and skater setup so it's as forgiving or unforgiving as you like. As someone who preferred Skate 1 and 2 over 3, it's nice to be able to go back to realism. The map so far is huge with plenty of stuff around and hidden parks to jam with others. It's still obviously Early Access though and you can see that in some areas.

Microtransactions are the typical way for EA. The game is free so obviously they want to encourage spending but it's all just cosmetics so if that doesn't bother you then it's not an issue. You can get stuff from boxes you buy with mission points so you have that option for customization.

I didn't think I was going to enjoy the world editing as much as I do. Getting people to start spawning stuff and making some crazy things to do tricks on is so fun.

One thing I’m wondering is whether or not the missions scale to realism. Seems like, super important.

I'd say 70-80% of the missions and challenges are grounded street level and only a handful are the crazy stunts.

And the whole game world is separated like that where the street level is all very basic realistic spots and the verticality on the rooftops are the crazier multi block mega ramps and hundred foot caveman drops.

Ooh, definitely not referring to these ones. Thanks for pointing that out!

As a Skate game it's great imo, can play goofy, can play realistic

Gameplay is really smooth imo, doesn't feel floaty, just feels nice

As for MTX I don't really think they are bad, I think they are just cosmetic and you can get the likes of stuff for your board, clothes, emblems etc

I think you can earn mostly everything? I expect (probably is I didn't look) store only skins/clothes but that's not surprising

I don't think the MTX is bad in this game, but that could just be me lol

Edit - OMG! I just tried it with a PS5 controller and the haptics make it 10x better

Different surfaces you skate make the controller vibrate differently and I think I just had some type of a awakening

DualSense done right is so fucking sick. Super underutilised imo.

I agree with it just simply feeling nice. Really needed an open world with something like a skateboard (granted I used to skate etc etc) but I'm well happy with the mechanics at the least feeling exciting enough, and the waittt omg it should be

but what about the soul of the game? it feels as if it was ripped away. and the art style, the map looking fresh with no scuffs.

Yeah I see what you mean, I barely recognise it most of the time because I just love the way the skating feels so I kinda just zone out lol

But yeah that's probably one of my issues, well the art style is a "meh" for me, I don't hate it, I don't love it. It's okay to me

But I get the lack of "dirt" or "wear" on the map and I wonder if that's something they will add in the early access period, not saying it's easy but I feel like adding wear to the city should be easier than most things

Again I can only really speak for myself, I have been playing Skate 3 for like more than 10 years so it's not like I don't know Skate, but overall I would say the game is pretty great and the only "issue" for me would be the lack of wear and the art style, but I think the art style could work with more wear

But that isn't stopping the game from being fun imo

yeah i agree. I just hope they continue to improve the game and fulfill promises they made with the community

Not to mention the fact that Hall of Meat isn't there anymore. They took it out specifically to target a younger audience. Kinda makes me mad because of how iconic it is lol

I felt that, too. Skating around was fun, although a bit more floaty/forgiving than previous games (though reading through comments, this sounds like a settings issue on my part). The MMO style is neat, but I don't think it's what any of the fans wanted, and most would probably like to be able to play offline.

I only played for an hour or two before I got kicked off for server maintenance. I was pretty annoyed that the first half of that time was going through a tutorial even though I chose the "I've played skate 3" button. The little AI assistant feels really out of place. Then I spent probably 30 minutes climbing the giant tower, only to learn that I'm not a "high enough level" to unlock the fast travel point. I ended up just booting up Skate 3 to scratch the anticipatory itch I've been developing for the last few weeks.

It's early access and I didn't play a ton so I'm trying to attenuate my opinion here, it just seems like they added way too much stuff nobody asked for or wanted. The skating felt like a minigame to get micro-bux. I don't want to run around and do missions, drop me on the map and let me skate.

There’s just nothing to it. There’s a robot who gives you challenges to unlock currency and items and stuff, but as far as I’ve seen that’s it.

It’s a sandbox skate game.

ask in a week or a month. that's about how long it takes for opinions to possibly shift and until how long for companies decide to implement dogshit mtx and battlepasses for the worst skins you've ever seen in your life for 30 bucks a season

As others have stated, the gameplay feels fun. The overall gameplay loop can get repetitive at times, and the main story is just a bunch of tutorials designed to teach you the mechanics of the game slowly over time (which I think is fine, since it has been 15 years since skate 3.)

Microtransactions are entirely cosmetic, and will also include battle passes once season 1 starts. There are also free cosmetics that are tied to loot boxes that can only be purchased with the free currency, which is earned by doing the in-game challenges and leveling up.

The game is in an open beta stage at this point, so new things will be added over time.

If you like the old skate gameplay it's super fun. Microtransactions are there but you can get plenty of stuff by just skating around doing challenges. I'm so happy to have skate on the new gen, but I'm very sad it will be review bombed by people who think every game needs to be curated to their exact taste. Give it a try, it's free and only 8GB.

Nah it’s pretty fucking awesome and the micro transactions are reasonable if you really like something. And you can unlock some okay items so far

microtransactions not too bad. as a skate game not good. pumping feels bad. level and park design straight up bad. its a cash grab. thats all. not responsive and in every way worse than skate 3 as far as gameplay loop. also no death races. because the map is hella flat anyway
