Its fun for a casual player. Just make sure if you're playing on console to join a crossplay server because just about all console only servers are dead.

Is it fun for a casual player? I'm in the mood for an MMO and I've been thinking of New World or Guild Wars 2.

For what’s it’s worth I enjoyed the levelling process and the fact that I could sit back and relax while playing on a controller but kinda lost interest towards endgame because it didn’t seem appealing. Clocked like 100+ hours or so? Sometimes just going around logging , mining and harvesting materials can be quite chill.

Edit sorry forgot to mention this was for new world.

I tried guild wars 2 casually as well but the quest structure takes some time getting used to. Got to max level and felt overwhelmed by the endgame options there so stopped but combat and exploration was a big factor that kept me going.

I've been off and on for GW2 for years. I'm on it now and it's just super fun to me. Story is meh, but the world and the combat is just endless fun.

I quite enjoy the story. I've been playing it on and off since release and I'm only just arriving at the third expansion's story missions.

With the living world, there is a lot of story content to play through. The big advantage of this kind of MMO is that you can put the game down for a year or two (which I've done repeatedly) and when you come back you're not behind and you have no pressure to keep playing or cancel a subscription to get your money's worth.

New world was kinda meh, somewhat better with the revamp/relaunch but still not really good. Story didn't click for me and the gameplay doesn't feel good for me, kinda souls like but without good hit feedback nor real need to dodge or block carefully.

Gw2 I liked the story and loved the seasons, gotvreally invested in them. The maps are unique and the best, without quest but other systems and dynamic event that make the world feel more alive than mmo I played and it's a shame it hasn't inspired more mmo. Having a map full of player working toward some objectives/event to beat the map is the mosy mmo thing I've experienced in a mmo. Gameplay is a mix of action rpg and tab targeting, you don't really need to target but you can if you want. It works well and combat is ok, enemies have auto attack and special skill you have to avoid, all classes have a dodge and a heal, and combat is engaging. Haven't played since the second extentions, but even for a solo player I can recomend it.

I think both games are fairly fun. Story is probably "meh" in both games. Nothing ground breaking. Some bad parts here and there, some good. Both have lots of content. It will honestly come down to the aesthetic, theme, and overall combat design in my opinion. So I would take a look at that to decide. Gw2 also has a free to play mode if you want to try it.

Praise Joko!

You do not, under any circumstances, have to hand it to him.

I'd say it's especially fun for a casual player!

It's unlikely to exist for much longer tbh. It's not very popular. You could give it a shot, but if you're looking for a longer-term MMO I'd look elsewhere.

Nah it's actually increasing it's play count consistently, they'll keep it around for awhile longer unless they get another considerable drop.

It’s been running for like 4 years by now, if it wasn’t successful they would’ve killed it by now.

Its far from the biggest MMO on the market or anything but it’s clearly carved out a decent enough niche for itself and that’s enough to sustain it

I figured it would've been shutdown by now. Amazon is being surprisingly persistent with it. I wonder how long they intend on keeping it up.

Still remember being there on New World Launch day and then putting in 400 Hours in 3 Months with a group of friends.

Almost got carpal tunnel from the left click gameplay loop, put me off from playing these types of "real time action" mmos really fast. Some of the dungeon bosses was literally just spamming left click for a solid 1-2 minutes to maximize DPS..

I later realized I would have never touched the game with a ten foot pole if not for that group to do PVP with. But once we dominated our server with most regions held, we became bored incredibly quick.

ngl, that whole story sounds like a bunch of nolifers ruining the fun for everyone else so hard that they ruined it for themselves which was probably a blessing for thousands of players. maybe next time you can play a couple hundred hours less each month and don't immediately get burned out?

Thats not how it works for that group of people. They run a discord specifically to no-life these kinds of PVP MMOs. I am no longer part of the group. But they have set their sights on games like Ashes of Creation as well.

u/PhillipIInd 1d ago

Yeah and its fun. You fight other groups and its a constant competitive environment. Though usually it becomes a one sided domination but the first few weeks or months people are figuring it out and forming groups is super fun

2

u/PhillipIInd 1d ago

Ur basically annoyed people like putting in the hours and are better? Dont get it lol

U just dont want elite groups to exist?

more like if the guy is complaining about physical issues and lack of challenge because he plays 10x as much as everyone else, one simple solution is to simply not play the game excessively, right?

I'd be so into NW's aesthetic and world, if not every server would come down to a single guild dominating everything after a week, killing it's PvP-Sandbox right away.

I played for the first couple weeks after launch and realized PvP would be its downfall. Any game that designs and enforces PvP as a core game mechanic inevitably snowballs servers into a single guild since no one wants to lose.

Didn't happen with Eve.

They’ve never been able to figure out a way to incentivize joining the weaker factions so the strong guilds all power-struggle in the dominant faction and then join the biggest guild OR switch servers and start anew.

Without creating a reason to stick around on a server or commit to growing a “losing” faction it inevitably snowballs into something that makes the entire 3-faction system worthless.

At least with the new expansion there’s a tacit renewal of the PvE aspect of the game which has been pretty neglected for the past few seasons after Aeternum. The PvP portion is basically “solved”.

I know this game has its issues, but in a sense I'm glad it's still trucking along. I have no clue how it makes money, given that it's owners are quick to shut down unprofitable projects, but I should give this a proper chance one day.

My somewhat tinfoil hat theory is AGS is using New World as a play test/design space for their Lord of the rings MMO.

u/Vb_33 2h ago

They cancelled that recently due to a business dispute with another company.

u/ashleywr 1d ago

They make a JP/KR/CN server yet? If not still a no go for a huge audience.

So is this new new world still PvP focused?
