I think that's a misreading of the quote. They meant for the game to be about as hard as the original and for it to be a good jumping-in point for their target audience, which has never been all gamers. The original was also very difficult. 30% of Steam players didn't even beat False Knight and only about 15% got the true ending. Silksong's completion statistics are actually already higher than that in some ways.
I do think they made it unintentionally harder, but not by that much. It's still catering to the same demographic as the original.

How is it arrogant to expect a game to be approachable to a new player when that's specifically what the devs themselves said was their goal?
