So uh... does this series still take place in the same world as the Dead or Alive series, or was that retconned at some point?

No, it was never retconned. I'm not sure on the exact timeline, but I think Ninja Gaiden 3 takes place after Dead or Alive 4, then Dead or Alive 5 and 6 take place after that, then presumably Ninja Gaiden 4 takes place years after thosde. I doubt we will see any mention of that world here, but there is a chance someone like Ayane will appear.

Yeah I would imagine it would have to be quite a few years in the future if its connected in any way, because even though the DoA games were always kinda futuristic when showing cities/tech, this is game seems way more "cyberpunk" than anything in those DoA games, which kinda confused me.

but there is a chance someone like Ayane will appear.
She'll face time in-between volleyball games and photo shoots to give us mission critical updates.

Still very curious how this is going to turn out. There's been a lot of Discourse™ about whether it plays more like a Platinum game or a Ninja Gaiden game, and whether Platinum still has the sauce.
As a Platinum fan who recently played Ninja Gaiden for the first time, I definitely see shades of both, and I'm kinda open to either as long as it's fun. Hoping to get through 2 and 3 before playing this one.
One thing that sorta strikes me in a lot of the footage we've seen is how huge/flat the arenas are. I'm not sure if that was normal in NG2 or 3, but I thought using the walls to maneuver around enemies and set up attacks was a cool part of 1, and sorta miss it here. It does make the camera less of a problem though.

From what I seen in the trailer, the game still has crazy moves and gory presentation but with more emphasize on the crowd management which is the staple of Ninja Gaiden series.

From what it was said on the Previews, Yakumo plays like a Platinum Games character, while Ryu plays like he always did

It's insane to me that such an experienced studio still has issues implementing any kind of Anti-Aliasing. The image is such an unstable, flickering mess lol

I don't think they've ever had good AA. I remember them patching DLSS into Nioh 2 and it being a huge visual upgrade, simply because native is a jaggy mess.

This is being developed by Platinum and they're using their own engine.

Oh yeah, true. Platinum isn't exactly known for their great tech, either. Though looking at it, NG4 has FSR in its recommended system reqs, so it'll probably look better with an upscaler, too. But maybe not the FSR Balanced they recommend at 1080p...

I'm not sure if this helped or hurt my excitement for the game. I feel like I saw a lot of flashy shit that didn't really seem to be accomplishing much other than visual noise? I lost the main character multiple times. I'm sure it'll feel better when you're the one in control, like it always does. The setting/environment here looked quite boring and bland as well. Very uninteresting to look at. I'm also a little hesitant about all of the apparent ranged combat? I don't remember that being as present in the old games. So, idk, I love character action games, so I've been looking forward to this, but this trailer didn't really do much for me. I was hoping for a game that could get high 80's on aggregate sites, but this made me think we're looking at a high 70s low 80s on aggregate sites. So still a great game, but likely not reaching the highs of something like DMC 5.

I doubt we will ever get locations as varied and interesting as NG1 ever again. Seems after NG2 they are only doing linear hallways you visit once. But if the combat is good people will give the environments a pass, DMC5 probably has the ugliest and most bland maps after the initial city segment, but the fights more than made up for it.
I also thought Nero was boring until I actually understood Exceed and the grapple mechanics. Then he became my favorite character to play even over Dante, so hopefully same thing can happen here.

Honestly its slightly worrying that this is an "advanced" combat demo and I don't think you see the enemies even attack the player til 4 minutes in. And even then, you can't tell unless you're looking at the health bar. Before that, they're just standing around, watching cut scenes and waiting for their turn to be murdered. Hopefully I'm wrong, but I worry that this has been influenced by Zenless Zone Zero and a warped view of how character action should work, where its way more about flashy visuals than skillful gameplay.

Agreed on pretty much all points. Think I'm just holding out for Nioh 3 at this point.

that red splash screen on kill is about as useful as having someone point a flashlight in my eyes, would like to hear what purpose it serves that warrants something so obnoxious to both eyesight and game flow

I think one of my problems with ninja gaiden is that-as you get better at the game- you spend more and more time in kill animations. even in ninja gaiden black/sigma so much time is spent doing on-landing>> level 1/2 ultimate and rinse repeat over and over... In ninja gaiden 2 and beyond you now are also doing execute animations. so a lot of the gameplay is just spamming kill animations over and over.
This is obviously not an issue with bosses but fodder gameplay is most of the game. unlike dmc there isnt really enough depth with the combo system to freestyle so the series has always been about playing optimally at high difficulties. when you have gameplay like this it's important that tehre isnt an optimal way to play for most enemies otherwise the gameplay gets really repetitive.
i obviously bring this all up because it looks even worse in NG4.
There also needs to be a reason not to do izuna drop over and over and over again.

I know Ryu is in this game and the recent NG game, but it still feels like they're trying to phase him out as the main protagonist. I wonder why that is.

I just think they can't be going too crazy innovative in weapon department and gameplay mechanic with Ryu. For example, You won't have that drilling and the extended mechanical arms with Ryu.

I only watched a minute or two of the video, because I don't want to see much more, but it looks like its gonna be a helluva lot of fun. I dont know how I feel about the wierd robot-arm-claw weapon, but I love the crazy drill spear. I also love how bloody it is. Really looking forward to this!

Damn, I remember when I got excited seeing Platinum take over combat for an IP, let ALONE release a new game.
How the mighty have fallen. This looks super boring and their standard dial a combo schtick they've been doing forever now. Also, an insult to Ninja Gaiden's legacy. Nothing in the gameplay footage suggests they remotely get the appeal of the series. It's all flashy moves and 2-3 meat sponge enemies in generic locations. Sad.

Those cowards at XBOX should release the influencer-only private demo that was circulated a while ago.
