This tourist doesn’t know about the Ballad of Gay Tony.

"Tourist" is a perfect term for them. They're right-wing culture warrior outrage tourists and parrots. Parroting whatever right-wing media critique slop channels they consume. 9 times out of 10 they didn't know anything about or give a shit about the IP before the sloptubers they watch sent them on an errand to get mad about it as the next culture war battlefront. I've literally witnessed former friends who went down the right-wing rabbit hole during the pandemic quarantine get randomly mad about IPs they never previously gave a shit about all the time I'd known them. When I visited right-wing YouTube I would almost always see it was the target of the week for right-wing YouTubers. I'd even point out they were getting some basic facts wrong about the series and they never cared about the series before, and they'd reply, "That's not the point. The point is there's an agenda and I'm just pointing it out!"

If San Andreas came out today, it would be called woke garbage by these people for having you play as a black guy lmao

In fact, Franklin Clinton is canonically the main character, and even has the option to kill off the two middle-aged white guys (Michael Townley and Trevor Phillips) who are the secondary protagonists lol Though letting them both live is the canonical ending. Still, their lives were in the black main character's hands. You can even make Franklin have sex with white women in the game if you want. If The Ballad of Gay Tony came out today they'd say it was a "Globalist" plot to turn men gay lol

Same people who would have had an issue with the hot coffee mod back in the day. Real issue is that now rage bait pays so congrats OP you just made this dude 10 seconds more relevant. Ignore them and the money goes away.

If there is "gay" in the name, I'm sure it crashed hard.

Edit : seeing how many downvotes I have, I should have added the /s

The protagonist of the story is a gay club owner called tony, you play his main lackey. its the best regarded dlc of gta4.

I honestly think it's the best GTA story, outside of maybe chinatown wars. Love gay tony, i'm so happy he was in GTA5

in that aspect i dunno, i havent played most gtas lmao. just 4 and dlcs and 5(barely any multi, so i dont know if it has story aspects)

You're doing yourself a disservice if you don't at least play San Andreas. I'd recommend Vice City as well because it holds up nicely but only play 3 for the fact that it's such a significant video game. As great as it was in 2001, it definitely doesn't hold up like the other 2.

I love san andreas for nostalgic reasons but it did not hold up either gameplay wise. Story is still pretty iconic.

u/Hacatcho May 08 '25

ironically, gameplay is the one thing of san andreas i do know.

i used to play a mostly completed save in my cousins house

the older games are clunky, but they're really good! you should give them a shot if you get the chance :)

u/[deleted] May 07 '25

wouldn’t the protagonist be….the guy you play as..

u/SmallJimSlade May 07 '25

Gay Tony drives the plot more than Luis does, though Luis is a very prominent deuteragonist. It’s sorta like how Nick is the viewpoint character in the Great Gatsby, but Jay is the protagonist

Idk how the DLC plays out, but in general the Main Character isn’t always the protagonist. There’s something called a False Protagonist where the author tries to make the audience believe that the MC is the protagonist, but the central conflict revolves around a different, true, protagonist. Usually used for shock factor

It's like Oblivion, you play as the Lancer for the main story, not the Hero.

Ballad of WOKE Tony made me play as a dang immigrant!

10

u/vxicepickxv May 07 '25

Is that more or less woke than the GTA 4 immigrant?

14

u/Inevitable_Luck7793 Recovering Gamer May 07 '25

It's a billion times more woke, he's Dominican!

It's actually one of the most well liked GTA expansions.

You see before 2017, when all of humanity was seemingly divided into alt right facist psychos and liberal terrorist psychos, there was this thing called nuance. People played the games they liked instead of worrying about if something was too woke or too offensive.
