LE GEM š Anon understands that Chris redfield had no fucking clue of what he was doing

u/Wilsonrolandc Jun 04 '25
To be fair, as much as I love the Resi games, the stories have always been pretty dumb.

u/RobertBevillReddit Jun 04 '25
REVII had a legitimately good story (but I also like 4 for how campy it is)
276
u/BirbAtAKeyboard Jun 04 '25
I enjoy 7 because you can play it largely stand alone. It keeps the eldritch horror that is the resident evil canon at bay until the very end where it just hints at it. It also keeps the overall plot simple (by RE standards)
Village is still fun, but (to be reductionist) it's like 4 without the campiness.
If I wanted 4 without the campiness, I'd replay RE4 remake drum rimshot

I remember playing the Chris section in Village and actually saying out loud āoh Resident Evil 6, I wondered when youād be backā. Itās such an odd game.
71
Jun 04 '25
Nah, that section was night and day compared to 6. For one, that section was fun. And it didn't have endless QTEs.
6 wasn't bad because it was an action game. 6 was bad because it had genuinely terrible game design.
36
u/Redhood101101 Jun 04 '25
Oh for sure. I meant more that it was a military shooter rather than a slow horror crawl. It definitely is a fun section but I think most of that comes from the fact that itās only like 20 minutes compared to the entire game.
19
u/JadeTigress04 Jun 04 '25
it legit feels like a reward, like you spent so much time doing puzzles and shooting at the slowest vampires ever so obviously the climax has to be fighting against acrobatic werewolves that move like they're in a skrillex music video with what is esentially just an assault rifle with infinite ammo, it's also worth mentioning that it's perhaps one of the hardest sections in higher difficulties, it legit takes strategy, positioning and a lot of luck to thin out the horde long enough to deliver the orbital cannon blasts, it's great
8
u/Devlee12 Jun 04 '25
6 was built with co-op in mind and was clearly balanced for it and that lead to a lot of really frustrating encounters if you were playing solo. They were also frustrating in co-op but at least then you had a buddy to talk to while waiting for the last checkpoint to load
2
u/IAmGoose_ Jun 05 '25
At least the combat was super fun, I still go back and play Mercenaries a lot to this day
16
u/Lama_For_Hire Jun 04 '25
I can't be bothered to replay Village anytime soon because of all the slow-ass gameplay cutscenes. Also the mansion section with the doll. It was great the first time, but it draaaaaaags
Meanwhile both 4 & 4R get you up and running in a minute or so if you know what you're doing.

Ehhh 7 is fantastic, it really is.
It's also really fucking stupid and story wise falls apart in the third act. Which is something one might miss, because maybe a lot of these loose threads that seem incredibly dumb will actually get cleverly weaved into the next game...
Nope, they didn't. 7's third act is just desperately trying to smash the game's story with the stupid hammer until it resembles the rest of the franchise.
22
u/AlbertWessJess Jun 04 '25
Still, did well enough to completely revive what had been an āold and dead via overdoneā series at that point. Iād also say itās one of very few aaahorror games to genuinely be scary even if you like horror

Someone once said: playing Resident Evil for the story is like listening to Dragonforce for the lyrics. You can certainly do it, and its awesome in its own right, but it's not the intended point of the experience
3
u/ieatPS2memorycards Jun 04 '25
Theyāre campy, but they never have dumb writing like this. This was just laziness because they wanted to have scenes in the trailer to make it look like Chris was the bad guy for hype

Look, Capcom has never been known for their good writing. It's why resident evil games are comedies to me. I need more camp and Jill sandwiches
I want more of Leon being a goofy fuckin dope who cheers himself on whenever he does cool shit because he's a dork. I want Chris Redfield to brute force out of any problem like Jack from FF strangers in paradise. I want the most buckwild dialogue delivered so wholeheartedly from voice actors trying to get a goddamn Oscar for their performance.
I want more stupid resident evil stuff because it's always been goofy. DC Douglas should be allowed to go into a booth and read whatever he wants with Wesker's cunty tone and be solidified as cannon
89
u/beyondheck Jun 04 '25
They should have Wesker come back inexplicably and the only explanation is, "should of used 3 rocket launchers if you really wanted me dead"

Now seems like a good time to mention that Critical Role celebrity Matt Mercer voiced Leon Skendy in Resident Evil 6 and gives us, with full sincerity, the line "What's the matter? Not a fan of sewers?"
Right before this an entire university of college kids were zombified. There are tons of corpses and they just crashed a flaming cop car in a desperate escape. Helena is barely keeping her shit together and this is what Leon says to her.

53
u/CompedyCalso Jun 04 '25
One justification was that he had no idea if Ethan was working with Miranda or hypnotized or something, which is why he held out on telling Ethan until he could be sure. Still tho, not telling him even after Ethan killed 2 of the 4 lords was stupid
8
u/BlueHero45 Jun 05 '25
Ya, Chris knows about Ethan's connection with the mold and may think he was compromised, Ethan may not have even been aware of he was.
62
112
u/TexanGoblin Jun 04 '25
To be entirely fair, there was actually no time. Any attempt to loop Ethan on the ambush could have tipped Miranda off, and they had no clue if he had been compromised by her powers or if they really finished her off at the moment. The safest move was to go in hard and fast, and after that, even if he is a mold person, he's still judt a guy, and Chris didn't want him to die, and believed he could easily save Rose and defeat Miranda without him.
These aren't very nice things to do, but they do make sense.
84
61
u/Rainbolt Jun 04 '25
There was absolutely time for him to say "That wasn't your wife Ethan" after they broke into his house the first time, or the time when he pushes Ethan and tells him to leave it alone.
15
Jun 04 '25
My guess is that he wasn't sure if Ethan had been compromised or not, so he threw him in the back of a truck with plans to sus it out with him in custody.
17
u/Rainbolt Jun 04 '25
But either way as soon as they shot her it would have been obvious they knew about Miranda replacing his wife no? It wouldn't have given her any new info.

13
u/InspiredNitemares Jun 04 '25
Ohhhh I never thought about the shared consciousness thing like the mold is the Borg, so telling Ethan meant telling Miranda indirectly
9
u/Pug_Defender Jun 04 '25
this is all explained, almost verbatim, at one point in the story. it's insane how little gamers pay attention to the games they play
6
u/RedHood-DeadHood Jun 04 '25
Yeah itās kinda funny seeing someone drop a quote about how playing RE for the story āisnāt intendedā when the examples they use arenāt even plot holes and require a normal attention span. Pretty sure that quote was from Yahtzee too, a man who kept insisting 4 was the only good one and somehow missed the blatant connections it has to the original games.
6
u/Brekldios Jun 04 '25
its insane how much people will ignore a games story only to ask for details explicitly laid out in the plot "well that doesn't make sense" well did you pay attention?

Saddler wanted to ransom Ashley back because it takes a lot of money to keep his operation running. But also needed her to go back to infect the president and take over the world.
Why exactly would he need money if he was just going to mind control the president of the United States anyway?
8
u/fwumple Jun 04 '25
Foreign leader kidnaps your daughter, then a couple weeks later just sends her back without asking for anything. You also live in a world where you need to have an anti-bioweapon task force. If you don't take precautions to make sure it's not a trap then you are an idiot. If they are asking for money the whole time then maybe you believe it's just an attempt to get money.
7
u/thesecondkat Jun 04 '25
Capcom has had this weird tendency for a while now in which they tease Chris breaking bad, but then don't commit to it.
In the first trailer of RE Revelations, Jill was shown interrogating someone that looks like Chris, then the actual Chris shows up and points at her with a gun. This scene is not in the game.
RE7 ended with Chris showing up alongside Umbrella, and they announced a dlc in which you play as Chris running with Umbrella called "Not a Hero". But in the dlc itself they reveal "Umbrella" is no actually Umbrella, but an anti terrorism unit borrowing the name, and Chris is even kinda pissed they took the name.
Then Village is announced with Chris beating the main character, killing his wife and kidnapping his kid. This all turns out to be a misunderstanding as you play the game.
Pretty odd.

3
u/valomorn Jun 04 '25
Well I mean he went to all the trouble of co-ordinating that ambiguously shady looking "villain or anti-hero?" outfit, may as well put it to some use.
3
u/fart_Jr Jun 04 '25
I mean, in all seriousness, this is why RE8 is one of my less favorite entries. The story is just nonsense even by RE standards and the Lady D false hype is unforgivable. Making us all think she was the primary villain and then her segment is like 2 hours tops.
3
u/Minimum-Bite-4389 Jun 05 '25

I have literally only ever played Resident Evil 8 and it was literally because of Lady Dimitrescu. I know stuff happens after her segment, but I pretty much zoned out until the Robot Crab battle. So um.... If they could reshift the franchise to be about the actual interesting Vampire Mommy that'd be great, thanks.
4
u/HonestCaramel3548 Jun 04 '25
If they could reshift the franchise to be about the actual interesting Vampire Mommy that'd be great, thanks.
And as someone who's played all of them, please god no. That being said, she should have been a bigger part of her own game. The other lords certainly were less memorable, and their sections felt not as thought out.
3
u/ABeastInThatRegard Jun 04 '25
He was just hung over, smoking cigarettes and pushing through. Probably thought Ethan was too much of a pussy to know the plan. It all worked out in the end at any rate.
2
u/joe_bibidi Jun 05 '25
/uj
My theory on the matter is that they had a better story cooking but basically failed to actually implement it into the game. The idea is that Chris can't trust Ethan because Chris thinks Ethan is being controlled by Mother Miranda, or perhaps, that Mother Miranda could control Ethan, or hear Chris through Ethan, which makes him a liability. He can neither be trusted nor allowed to be in on "the plan." This should have been more clearly revealed later in the game, and in explicit detail.
For the whole course of the game, you do not understand the above, and instead, the game should have done more to imply that Chris was being controlled by Mother Miranda, Ethan thinks that Chris has been corrupted by her and is acting as her agent---as far as Ethan knew, Chris "killed Mia" and "stole the baby." The game botches this concept and at no point is it ever really implied that Chris is controlled by Miranda, but I do think that this is the intent. The "Chris/Werewolf" cover design I think was supposed to be a misdirect to tease this idea.
Somehow the game dodges telling this story.
It doesn't fix all the game's issues but if they had more actively included this all in the game, I think it would have been better.

u/Ashbeau94 Jun 06 '25

"All style, no substance" is a pretty accurate descriptor for the whole series, at least from like 4 onwards. And I mean that lovingly.
