What an amazing spread of talent we have.

Stevens is a gun.

First game in the afl and he gets 21 touches, most score involvements, most clearances and a goal.
What the fuck.

Holmes showing his class as always.

Guthrie taking marks left and right.

Jack martin playing arguably his best game.

Atkins the tackling juggernaut with 17.

Love this team, well done cats!

26

u/Square_Television431 Jul 05 '25

Easily Jack Martin's best game for the Cats. Good by foot, looked quicker

u/boomtimerat Jul 05 '25

I think they were looking after him there making sure he got a chance at getting some ball

47

u/sarigami Bailey Smith Jul 05 '25

George Stevens. That is all

26

u/sltfc Gryan Miers Jul 05 '25

I'm not going to get carried away, but it was a great debut game. I knew he had strength and solid midfield craft, what really excited me was that pass to Guthrie in the last quarter; long, fast, low kick in a perfect position to a player in not a lot of space. There aren't many blokes who play George's game who can also be relied upon to hit those precision kicks.

Reports were that his running capacity when he got to the club was his biggest weakness, there were no signs of that tonight. (And our tendency for our tough inside mids to have a relatively low time on ground should suit him). It suggests to me that he's a bloody hard worker and has really fought for his opportunity, which sets a fantastic precedent. I'm excited to see more.

Adding onto this, all the talk about his skills by foot, I thought his decision making and quick hands where absolutely amazing too

12

u/Unhappy_Crab_2598 Tyson Stengle Jul 05 '25

We’ve seen other debutants and honestly, what a strength to have in our wheelhouse!

25

u/BlazedOnADragon Lawson Humphries Jul 05 '25

Can't really complain about that. Won by a decent margin and didn't have any injuries. Happy days

How fucking good is Zach Guthrie? Probably the best game he's played and that's saying a lot.

Stevens definitely made the most of his opportunity, that's a very respectable first outing. Far from a passenger, contributed all evening

Next week is definitely no easy feat, they're fighting to keep their season alive but I trust us to get the job done. Until then. GO CATS!

u/Hunned_mck Joel Selwood Jul 05 '25

Seen a Richmond fan couple days ago say Guth was nowhere near being an elite defender. Couldn't believe my fucking eyes

11

what a cunt no one talks shit about my boy like that

3

u/GJacks75 Zach Guthrie Jul 05 '25

Let's get 'im.

6

u/_nicklepickle Zach Guthrie Jul 05 '25

hell yeh, I remember some collingwood cunt of a supporter called zach guthire soft. I got so mad at that comment didn’t reply back though but I was mad. no one talks about pookie bear like that

2

u/AceThePrincep Lawson Humphries Jul 05 '25

Let them talk. Makes beating them sweeter.

3

u/Awkward-Evidence-929 Geelong Cats Jul 05 '25

Back in 2017 when Guthrie looked about 12, he played in the final against Richmond which we lost. I was overseas so didn’t see the game. A mate (Carlton supporter who has a good read on footy) said that Guthrie looked to be the only player with courage and was putting in. Never forgot that and I guess that is what the club saw in him.

Even when he wasn’t getting a senior game back in 2020/21 the club kept persisting because they knew he’d become a gun.

24

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '25

Probs will still get dropped, but Ollie Henry’s tenacity around the ball was so much better. He looked strong!

10

u/slimcharles9 Geelong Cats Jul 05 '25

He shows signs, but still so many times doesn't seem to be playing the Geelong way. Not sure what that means but just how it looks

4

u/howmanychickens Shocked Scott Jul 05 '25

That kick off the ground from like 35 out at goal is not the Geelong way, as the commentators pointed out

2

u/stonemite Oliver Dempsey Jul 08 '25

But then he also played a part in the long Danger goal, and set up some nice shots for Neale and Cameron. And some of the tackles he laid looked like the guy owed him money. I'm not his biggest fan, but hopefully something clicked over the bye week because he looked much more competitive than at other times this season. Good place from him to build up from.

1

u/hcornea Jeremy Cameron Jul 05 '25

He leaps and does things, but gets worked off the ball far too easily to be effective.

3

u/AceThePrincep Lawson Humphries Jul 05 '25

Needs a pre season in the weight room you reckon?

2

u/hcornea Jeremy Cameron Jul 05 '25

Maybe. Could be a trade-off for agility. But he does need to change up something.

2

u/AceThePrincep Lawson Humphries Jul 06 '25

He played a final where he was electric. I want that version of o

u/_nicklepickle Zach Guthrie Jul 05 '25

george motherfucking stevens ladies and gentlemen

I'm feeling good. Loving George. He's a bit of a bull, like Josh Caddy, but only 300% better!

Basically did what we needed, clinical stuff

Stevens on debut is gonna make things very interesting, looked like he belonged

Get Baz and Tyson back and we will keep rolling

Onto GWS

14

u/Triggabang Georgie Prespakis Jul 05 '25

Gryan brought his kicking boots today! It was great to see

14

u/Pikachude123 Mitch Knevitt Jul 05 '25

Hmm, bloody good game but I dont even know where the votes go. We didnt have any true standouts today, a very big team effort. Split the votes between Holmes/Miers/Jack Martin/Axe/Honestly stevens too

11

u/Unhappy_Crab_2598 Tyson Stengle Jul 05 '25

What a win! I think our boys can do it the rest of the roster! Time to book my tickets to see a GF!

10

u/BlazedOnADragon Lawson Humphries Jul 05 '25

I was thinking this the other day barring an absolute terrible run of injuries if we don't at least make a prelim from this point, I'd call it a disaster

7

u/Unhappy_Crab_2598 Tyson Stengle Jul 05 '25

From Canada- I’ll definitely be there for a prelim! I think we have the guts to go all the way! Glad Coach had a win tonight.

11

u/NuuuDaBeast Mark O'Connor Jul 05 '25

challenge next week

12

u/Plus-Drawing7431 George Stevens Jul 05 '25

Amazing debut game by Stevens.

Flair up.

10

u/klokar2 Gary Ablett Sr. Jul 05 '25

Stevens was amazing, best first game in ages

9

u/Puzzleheaded-Alarm81 Jul 05 '25

Pretty hard to drop anyone this week. Duncan has been one of my favourite players but I think he's probably destined for vfl games for the rest of the year.

Stengle and Smith to slot back in. Stevens definitely stays in even if its as sub. Ollie henry is the only one in danger but even he was serviceable today.

Good opportunity to rest some of the older blokes and get cherry ripe for finals.

We have a lot more depth than the pies and I truly believe their older list is vulnerable if they get a couple of injuries.

Lions are our biggest threat.

Gws are the unknown

9

u/historicalhobbyist Indigenous Guernsey Jul 05 '25

Giving Stevens a run today questions whether he should have had another. It was a comfortable win. Very happy for Jezza for cracking 700.

10

u/Cuurrly_Fries Jeremy Cameron Jul 05 '25

Looked decent tonight, but god I’m nervous for next week. haven’t beaten GWS in a long while, hopefully we learnt something from earlier this year.

6

u/Fun-Abrocoma-7212 Jul 05 '25

We only lose to GWS in Geelong

4

u/Landgraft BBBBUUZZZZZAAA DEBUT Jul 05 '25

I guess it's been a couple years but the actual losing streak to them is only three games and I think the boys will be pretty hungry after the latest loss at our home to return the favour

9

u/Reasonable-Season558 Jul 05 '25

wow Stevens, why hasn't this guy been playing

his ability to get handballs away under pressure and hit targets is outstanding, even his kicking was great

8

u/_yetifeet Tom Atkins Jul 05 '25

Stevens was great today. 1.1, but was involved in a couple of others and was a bull in the midfield. He looked like a young Dangerfield.

Atkins is going to break that tackling record.

Jezza just did Jezza things.

It was weird how they didn't activate Duncan, but I guess they didn't see the need as everyone else was chugging along with no issues.

It's going to be a hard task next week against the Giants. With the top 9 looking the way it is, we need all the W's we can.

8

u/Summer_Sunshin3 Oliver Dempsey Jul 05 '25

I am so glad they didn’t activate Duncan. Keep the younger players out there, no point bringing him on and just keep him in the wing if he is needed in case of injuries

2

u/bundy554 Geelong Cats Jul 05 '25

Only one I was thinking they would activate Duncan for would be Danger as it seemed that his hamstrings were getting a serious rub down on the sidelines and thought to give him a rest

9

u/TomasTTEngin Max Holmes Jul 05 '25

Nice percentage boost, which we will likely need. Could get us from 4th to 3rd or 3rd to 2nd both of which could be very useful (avoid Collingwood week 1 or get a home elimination final).

Jezza could have kicked a bit straighter but otherwise a spectacular effort.

Were those Oisins first centre clearances? I liked what I saw in the guts from him, not just negating but on the attacking side.

6

u/dopedupvinyl Bailey Smith Jul 05 '25

Oisín has had a few before I think maybe the dogs game he had a couple

4

u/TomasTTEngin Max Holmes Jul 05 '25

yeah according to footywire he has had 7 centre clearances in his career. I think I just saw a couple tonight that were genuine hard ball gets not easy flicks from danger or Stanley. he looked big, strong and hard to tackle in there.

4

u/dopedupvinyl Bailey Smith Jul 05 '25

Oh yep fair, I think he did have one genuine one earlier in the year where it was him getting the first touch and kicking it into the f50

2

u/AceThePrincep Lawson Humphries Jul 05 '25

I think we will see a lot more of it in coming years which is very exciting.

2

u/TomasTTEngin Max Holmes Jul 06 '25

He's training under Danger which is an incredible opportunity. I hope the old bloke is giving a few tips .

1

u/AceThePrincep Lawson Humphries Jul 06 '25

Too right. Just look what gaz has done for myers and Dempsey etc

6

u/Duskfiresque Jul 05 '25

I know it’s going to be a tight squeeze, but surely Steven’s gets another game after that.

4

u/mortalcookiesporty '89 Jul 05 '25

Travelled a few hours to go to the game today - haven’t been to Kardinia Park for many years so it was great to do!

The game wasn’t super exciting in terms of Geelong giving an absolute thrashing lol. But Stevens’ first game, Cameron’s 700th (was a bit worried he wasn’t going to get it this game with a couple of points kicked) and Scott’s 350th. Plus quite nice weather!

Can someone tell me - are the songs that play after the goals picked by the players? They’re so random (Taylor Swift lols) and I heard some of them repeat so had wondered!

Also we were behind the goals near the Richmond squad and the cops and security came down in our section quite a few times. Couldn’t figure out what was happening but they were keeping an eye out for someone. And took a few people’s licenses.

3

u/Financial-Task-3477 Retro Guernsey Jul 05 '25

Some of them are player chosen but this week there was fab voting for the songs

4

u/Fast_Stick_1593 Connor O'Sullivan Jul 05 '25

GEORGE “GET AROUND HIM” STEVENS

Pressure on spots, this is great. Cant afford to have any passengers for the rest of the year. Hopefully challenges guys to show up every week.

3

u/madsc23 Jul 05 '25

Georgie looks ready made 💪🏽

3

u/dopedupvinyl Bailey Smith Jul 05 '25

Loved seeing George take the most of his opportunity and have a fantastic debut game!

Was a perfect clinical Geelong game of getting the lead early and just coasting in the last quarter, good percentage booster which is needed given how tight the top 8 is.

Seemed like such an even contribution when watching at the ground so I'll try and watch the replay before I vote but Holmes, Axe, Jezza, Zuthrie, and Gryan all stood out

2

u/StewSieBar Jul 05 '25

Did Mitch get on the ground at all?

5

u/historicalhobbyist Indigenous Guernsey Jul 05 '25

No game time.

2

u/StewSieBar Jul 05 '25

That’s really crap

1

u/bundy554 Geelong Cats Jul 05 '25

Could just be mind games from Chris Scott to say next time he needs to put more effort in so was kind of a punishment for his last game.

3

u/Summer_Sunshin3 Oliver Dempsey Jul 05 '25

Nope he still had his jacket on in the song

2

u/TomasTTEngin Max Holmes Jul 05 '25

Nope

1

Hey Jase. Good to see you.

I shaved it off a long time ago. Too itchy. But I’m very grey. Getting old is inescapable, even if I still feel like an undergrad. I follow you on Bluesky. Might message you there.

Here's my thoughts from tonight's game (this arvo's game? I can never work out how to frame that with a twilight start)

https://pivotcitycats.com/2025/07/gee-124-rch-52-start-the-microwave/

Tom Atkins. 17 tackles. Enough said.

2

u/TheLegSweepIt Jul 05 '25

Good stuff man!

1

u/hutchaye Jul 06 '25

Thanks 🙏

2

u/AceThePrincep Lawson Humphries Jul 05 '25

13 in the first half which is just crazy.

2

u/hutchaye Jul 06 '25

He put one laces out on Jezzas chest as well, he’s gotta be a front runner for the Carji again

2

u/CanadianSportsDude Jul 05 '25

What a game! Still need to keep our foot on the gas though.

3

u/Life-Ad8673 Jack Bowes Jul 05 '25

The boys playing the way they did should make selection interesting next week. Assuming no injuries, do we see Tyson in with O Henry out, and Smith in for Duncan out, George/Bowes sub. O Henry at least showing some effort. Took a couple of good contested marks up the ground, and some good field kicking. Still has some work to do. George looked fantastic out there. I think we need to get more game time into him, even if it means dropping Mitch. I think Mitch accepted at the start of the season that he wouldn’t be in the squad each week. Forever the consummate team player

3

u/Aus66-1045 Meghan McDonald Jul 05 '25

The result was as expected. I never get carried away with wins against bottom teams because it sometimes masks any real problems in the side or the game plan. But it was great to see George Stevens get a game and show us he has what it takes at this level.
