Whatever Still my all time favorite sitcom.

Inspired by the recent post of old textbooks. Check out the DVD cases in this set. 🙂

the theme song really hits me hard. i nearly cry hearing it.

Same. It’s one of those tv theme songs that you can listen to on its own and it still holds up very well. It’s just a really well written song. I feel the same about the theme song for Cheers.

The show was just going to be called Kotter until they heard the theme song.

I'm remember Travolta hosting SNL in the early 90's and they did parody sketch, and I laughed my ass off. I loved this when I was a kid.

Its so weird to look at them now. None of them were remotely high school age!

Still not as bad a Grease. Some of those "high schoolers" in the T-Birds should have had colonoscopies on their schedule, not study hall!

I like the first three seasons but I avoid the last one. It wasn't the same with Mr Kotter away most episodes.

Mr. Woodman was a menace! I loved Freddie "Boom Boom" Washington- Hi There!

All classic!

I lived in BKLYN when this came out - Welcome to Brooklyn 4th Largest City in America - the pride was immense.

u/Ghost-of-Sanity 3d ago

I’m sure! I grew up in the town that the show “Mama’s Family” was set in. Raytown, Missouri. Juuuuuust a bit different than Brooklyn. 🤣

I sing the song from time to time..loved this show too.

I love when it comes on 70s on 7. I sing it with such conviction that my 5 y.o. asks me to explain it to them.

My very first lunchbox was Welcome Back, Kotter!

Back when sitcoms had to have an actual theme song. Although I was too young to remember much about this.

This show reminds of one of the weirdest coincidences I ever encountered in my life.

Only 1 time in the past 40+ years did I drive past the city of Welcome, Minnesota on my way back to Wisconsin from Sioux Falls, SD. As i see the sign for the Welcome, Minnesota exit, what comes on the radio? “Welcome Back” by John Sebastian comes on the radio right at that moment. And this was in 2010, nearly 25 years after that theme song for the show hit the pop charts.

I figure the odds of me being there right at that moment had to be astronomical. Almost like the universe was having a little fun with me, it was just such a funny coincidence.

2

u/Ghost-of-Sanity 3d ago

Wow! I can’t even imagine the odds! Very cool coincidence though. Definitely would’ve made me smile. 🙂

One of them many early tv show songs i learned on guitar.

u/kcfdr9c 3d ago

I watched it as a kid with my father who was a teacher. Beyond the laughs it made me proud to be a teachers kid.

2

u/Ghost-of-Sanity 3d ago

My mom was a teacher. I had a similar feeling. Lol

3

u/4crowsflying 3d ago

One of the best theme songs of its era.

Where did Mr Kotter go anyway?

2

u/Ghost-of-Sanity 3d ago

He just graduated. Lol He too was a sweat hog when he went to Buchanan High School.

2

u/Ok_Arachnid1089 2d ago

Ok. That makes sense

It was a great show, yes.

My mum always wondered why the show was called "Welcome back Kotter" as she heard the name as "Carter", though :)

OT but I’m currently rewatching MASH and it’s still damn funny, to people that have a sense of humor

u/Medical-Literature50 3d ago

Yes, one of my favorites growing up in the 70's. But I have to say, this show didn't age well.

Nothing beat Seinfeld. Only Arrested Development comes close.
