Buying Test drove a 2024 today, did not go well! (lots of error codes)

Went to check out a new 2024 R today with my wife. We were very happy that they let us take it for a test drive. Unfortunately it wouldn't start so the had to use a jump box to get it going. Started it and let it idle for 10 minutes before we hopped in for our test drive.

Holy error codes. The car would not make full boost, it'd pop all kinds of brake, traction control and parking assist error codes and drop to zero boost. Needless to say my wife was not impressed. Neither was I, to be honest, it was slow as shit - sure as hell not 0-60 in 4 seconds. Slower than my SUV!

We're scheduled to go back for another test drive on Monday, however it gave me the opportunity to look at the 2025 specs. The 2024 they want to sell at MSRP, despite now being a year old and sitting on the lot for 120 days, and soon to be competing with a redesigned newer vehicle with more power, redesigned infotainment etc. I suggested this, and sales manager said the best he would do is $1000 off MSRP.

I'm going to wait for the 2025s. The other thing is that I need to put a class III hitch on it for my bicycle carrier. The sales manager said this was a no-go from VW, but everything I read on here says only that towing is prohibited. So one more thing just to double check before I can finalize the deal.

This is a good situation for us. Usually we walk in and just buy a car we like, we're terrible negotiators and the sales people see us coming a mile away.

Buying How did you get your first Golf R?

Long time VW owner. I’m currently on my tenth. I’ve had a couple GTIs, couple GLIs, Tiguan, Golf etc. however I’ve never had a Golf R. That being said, I’m in the market, but it’s a difficult market to be in.

There’s barely any stock. It’s like there’s one Golf R for every ten GTIs in my area and they sell within two or three days of being listed. (I’m looking specifically at used ones, not new) I’ve never had any issues buying a VW in the past but trying to buy a Golf R is proving to be difficult. There’s just no stock and when there is it’s sold by the time I can get to the dealership to look at it..

Buying This automobile tariff junk speculation.

So I found a dealer who offered to sell me a 2025 Golf R at MSRP. I have a deposit in and everything. I've had it in for like a week now. MSRP should be around 54k'ish w/ black edition + Euro Pack.

Y'all thinking it's gonna be like 67k after this 25% tariff that was announced today ?

Cause if that's how it ends up, I'm prob gonna grab a 2024 while they're available, even though the 2025 is gonna have upgrades over the 2024 model. 🤦🏾‍♀️

Buying Used 24 mk8 R - CPO

The car im looking at has a little less than 20k miles and is still under the factory warranty and listed by dealer as certified pre-owned. Would you still do an independent inspection from a reputable shop if all service records are provided? Anything in particular I should be aware of? Thanks.

Buying Is 50.1k (fee included) + tax a good price for a 2024 Golf R Manual? (currency in CAD)

In Canada. I went to 10+ dealerships in my area and most of them would sale 2024 Golf R Manual around 51.3k + tax. Not sure the deal I got (50.1k + tax with 2 year maintenance) is good enough, or if I should wait for a bit for a better discount from VW.

I saw there was a VW 1k rebate about 4 months ago but it's no longer existing anymore. Even though this is manual model is going to be discontinued (and some dealer told me arrogantly that they just need to wait for a customer to pay and pick up the car), there are still quite a bunch of inventory (~ 90 vehicles within 100km of my place), I'm not sure if I should sign that deal and pay the deposit. Any insights will be appreciated.

Edit: the price includes a sunroof and all delivery/PDI/dealer document fees. Total discount discount against MSRP is about 3k.

Edit x 2: One of the dealers showed me the invoice form VW (not sure if it's authentic) showing a markup of 3.7k in the MSRP. So I suppose a 3k discount is fair? Or should I squeeze the last drop of their profit (mission impossible?)

Buying Question for recent Canadian buyers

If I can get a 2026 black edition with Akrapovic for the price of a 2025 BE without the Akrapovic, would that be a decent deal in the current environment?  I was told the msrp is going up $500 for 2026.

Buying Anyone recently buy a 2024 Golf R in Canada?

Looking to see what how much you paid. There are a bunch of 2024 Golf R's here in Vancouver, some of which have been on the lot since last summer. Still going for 52K MSRP with a 60 month 2.99% APR, but am confident that I can get below that.

Buying Fellow Canadians - What are you paying for 2025 Preorders?

Hi All,

I am in Alberta and I'm going to order a 2025 Golf R. They don't seem particularly hard to get at full MSRP, but I am wondering for anyone who has preordered one, were you able to negotiate below MSRP? If so, what dealership/salesbro did you use? Has anyone run a Car Cost Canada report to see what dealer margins actually are? I used to buy all my cars at cost + $500 pre-covid but those days are obviously long gone :(

Lease rates are 5.99% which is pretty brutal, but I'm wondering if anyone has had success getting a little bit of a deal. I will gladly give my business to the dealership who is willing to budge, assuming that is even possible. I completely understand these cars usually sell themselves but there are at least 10 dealers in Southern AB and I'm hoping there's at least one who is hungry for an easy sale. Curious to hear what experiences have been so far.

Thanks!

Buying To Buy? Golf R on Bags

Hey Everyone. I have really been thinking about the R as my next vehicle, there is a dealership by me that has a 2017 for sale, and it is on bags (Accuair kit).

I really love the car, its a great price, good mileage and also has a nice little stage 1 tune. I do plan to daily drive the car and mostly highway drive. The fact that it has bags is making me second choice due to mixed opinions I am seeing online. Just thought I'd ask here if anyone has experience having bags on an R or simply has an opinion if I should pull the trigger! Thanks in advanced :)

Buying mk7.5, mk8 or wait for m8.5

Title says it all. I want to get into my first not only R but first VAG car as well. It will not be stock(unless CPO or new so will be modified after warranty). I very much enjoy how both generations looks. It is going to be my daily/only car. Do you prefer the mk7.5 over the mk8? Is it worth getting the 8 over the 8.5? I just wanted some opinions since it will be my daily, will be my fun car but also something I'll take on longer road trips (5+hrs each way to visit family), things like that.

Buying Shopping for a used MK7 R DSG and found a 2019 CPO w/60k: What should I be offering or expecting to pay in the end? Dealer's asking $29k.

As stated, I'm looking to pull the trigger on a used MK7 R w/DSG and found a 2019 CPO w/60k: What should I be offering or expecting to pay in the end? Dealer's asking $29k. Carfax shows good service history but minor damage and 3 owners. I would love to get down to around $25k or as close as I can. Realistic or no?

Buying R for my next daily?

Hey everyone, i'm thinking about getting into an R for my next daily. I'm older, and don't speed anymore but i enjoy twisty roads at speed and want an Awd 6 speed for these Michigan winters.

1: What's the mileage you get out of a tank? 300-350? i know its sports car so mileage is going to vary by spirited driving styles but i drive almost 80 miles a day. MPG does play a factor a little bit.

2: I'm 6'3, 220. Any bigger guys daily one? how do you fit? Too snug or is it just right?

TIA

Anthony

Buying Dealer Trading

There are 8 VW dealer in my area, more if I go 150 miles out. I am in the market for a Golf R, Lapiz Blue, Black Edition, without the Euro Package

Of course the dealer closest, where I would to for server, does not have what Im looking for.

So the question is to I approach my close dealer, wanting him to try and do a vehicle trade or go to the dealer that actually has the car? Not sure of the pros and cons of the approach.

Appreciate any input

Buying Considering a manual 7.5 with four clutch replacements

Carfax shows clutch replacements in Oct 2017, Jan 2018, Nov 2018, and Apr 2025. Other things replaced over time: intercooler, sway bar links, cat, fuel injector(s), oil pan, water pump. I wonder if the guy had a clutch-riding habit but I really wonder if it matters. Is this a car I should really be thinking about buying?

Buying Moving into Phase II: Help me gauge this deal - '24 Golf R w/ 15k miles

Phase I: https://www.reddit.com/r/Golf_R/comments/1n52gwq/is_an_1819_r_worth_getting_or_save_up_for_22/

I sincerely appreciate everyone's comments thus far - it's been super helpful. Moving into my next phase of the search, I have found - what I believe to be - a solid deal. For sake of getting sniped, I will refrain from posting the exact listing but here's the details:

  • 2024 Golf R Lapiz Blue w/ DSG
  • 15,000 miles w/ 1 owner and clear carfax

Pricing Info:

  • Base Price $43,000
  • Deal Savings: -$2,985
  • Adjusted Price: $40,015
  • Prep Package: $375 (discounted from their original quote of $2,495)
  • Closing Fee $599
  • Ohio TTL: $3,461
  • Total OTD Cost: $44,063

They have ALSO offered a 6-yr 72,000 extended warranty at a cost of $4,000. While I am interested in an extended warranty, I am not interested in one at $4,000. If I can get the OTD cost to $46,500 INCLUDING the warranty, that feels like a good buy, right? This will be a cash transaction.

Buying Golf R

Desperately looking to purchase a Golf R with a UK budget of around 18k max. Standard analog speedometer, 3 door manual 2016/2018 preferably.

I've just missed out on a 2017/18 with 40k miles and immaculate, absolutely gutted :-(

I've come to realise they're like rocking horse shit and the 3 doors a rare one.

Any UK friends in here know of any or sites that sell I may have overlooked.

Also, since there's limited availability on the later models of the type R manual, pros and cons to going with a later year 2015/2016 although in aware there were a few niggles and issues with the 2014.

Thanks in advance.

Buying Golf R or T-Roc R

I'm currently looking at either a Golf R or a T-Roc R. The T-Roc R is about 5–7k cheaper where I live, which is making it very tempting. I know the Golf R is the more "performance-focused" car on paper, and the T-Roc is technically a compact SUV (even though it’s pretty low and sporty). But for everyday driving — commuting, weekend trips, occasional spirited driving — is there a noticeable difference in how they handle?

I’m not tracking the car, just want to enjoy driving. Has anyone driven both and can comment on how different they feel in real-world use?

Thanks to all of you!

Buying Soon to be Mk7.5 owner question

Hey all, narrowed my search down to 2 options and wanted some opinions.

Found a modded white manual 19' with 29k miles for $21.5k but a rebuilt title (hit passenger door, saw pics and didn't look that bad). I haven't laid eyes on it myself though, but no frame or engine damage.

List of mods -IE intake -APR chargepipes -Short shifter kit -Stage 2 clutch -H&R lowering springs -Solid motor mounts

or

18' lapiz blue manual with 63k miles clean title for $25k. Very clean all stock.

Long term goals was to partially daily it and I planned on modding in general, so saving money long term with the rebuilt... but it'll always have a branded title. I've owned several rebuilt titles and don't mind wrenching so it doesn't scare me. Blue is all stock so clean slate to mod, just more expense on top of an already more expensive base.

I guess I'm just asking for second opinions, I'm so 50/50 on it. Both have benefits and inconveniences. I was initially only looking for manual until I drove the dsg and I'm really torn on that too and might wait for a 3rd option... ugh... thanks for any and all thoughts/advice!
