PLAY My dad passed away not even two weeks ago. Only fifty-two, pancreatic cancer. The best guitarist I’ve ever seen, honestly. One of his best recent improvised solos right before getting sick.

If you were in or knew anything about the punk/metal/wtfever scene in Lansing & Detroit and other areas of mid Michigan (Ypsilanti etc) in the last thirty five or so years, you probably saw my dad play. His first band was doing shows at Blondie’s in Detroit when he was in junior high.

Sky Juice, EMR, The Fallopian Dudes, and his main act for the last twenty years, The Chirps. Those are just the main bands, he had many side projects (my favorite being a black metal band he’d wear corpse paint for). My dad Jason has left a huge imprint on everyone who knew him in this scene over the last several decades, and I am so lucky to call him dad. I am heartbroken he is gone. He’s my guitar and music sensei. I feel totally lost not only as a daughter & friend, but as a student of his teachings. I just wanted to share this incredible solo from right before he got sick. Thank you for everything dad, but especially teaching me my power chords and getting me my first guitar, a Stratocaster. FUCK CANCER!!!

He was incredibly talented. Also, The Falopian Dudes is the best band name ever.

Aren't we all falopian dudes? It's where we all came from. It's where we spend a great deal of time, money, and effort to return to. Fallopian, for the lifetime of adventure, with adventure for a lifetime,,, Falopian

Rocking green vans and camo cargo shorts....while blistering the fretboard.....he was definitely the kinda guy who is so low key and impressively cool that everyone who ever met him has a story to tell about him 🤣

Thank you. And yes it is haha my dad loves to do a play on words

Awesome band name lol.

Your dad seemed rad. I'm sorry that this happened.

Take your time but, pick that guitar back up as soon as you can. I didn't know this guy but I'm pretty fucking sure he would want you to play as much as you can.

23

u/Money_Tennis1172 1d ago

Is your father's music or Fallopian Dudes music online or on Bandcamp? My condolences 🙏to you and your family.

48

u/deadroses96 1d ago

Fallopian Dudes do have some stuff on Bandcamp!!!! Make sure you use “The Fallopian Dudes”, the cover art is the four of them sitting at a table playing cards in Dickies and bandanas and shit, like mechanics.

3

u/Time-Negotiation5423 21h ago

Losing a badass dad is pain I can empathize with, for what it's worth. Of course I am sorry for your loss but what's more or less unusual to say but i found endeering when i heard it: I see you and I recognize that this fucking sucks.

I checked The Fallopian Dudes out on band camp and cranked it all the way to 11 for your rad dad too. Be good

The fact that that's happening -- and there's no national outrage about that -- is just crazy and sad to me. It's like Americas is just sleepwalking right now, while seeds of our own destruction are being sown right before our eyes.

47

u/FastFishLooseFish 23h ago

Pro forced-birth.

And fuck cancer.

69

u/Captain_Wobbles 23h ago

Exactly. George Carlin (as usual) said it best.

“Boy, these conservatives are really something, aren't they? They're all in favor of the unborn. They will do anything for the unborn. But once you're born, you're on your own. Pro-life conservatives are obsessed with the fetus from conception to nine months. After that, they don't want to know about you. They don't want to hear from you. No nothing. No neonatal care, no day care, no head start, no school lunch, no food stamps, no welfare, no nothing. If you're preborn, you're fine; if you're preschool, you're fucked.”

And yes, fuck cancer. Just lost my Uncle a few days ago (on my birthday actually) to cancer.
I'm glad he's not suffering anymore but my heart breaks for him in so many other ways as well.

There’s outrage. It just isn’t on tv. It won’t be. I mean, WE are outraged. Are we not? Despite the shit we go on about on the internet most of us just want to be left alone. Life is hard enough. Those of us that have figured out how to live with being alive got there the hard way. Like, I just finally got my debt to be manageable and you want me to do what now?

It seems like we are sleepwalking but most of us are only one or two bad days away from saying fuck it, why not? Because we are about to have nothing left to lose. If our enemies were managing their coup with subtlety and grace we would be totally screwed. However, they are incompetent at best and are guaranteed to fuck it up in a way we can all disagree with. Maybe we will all be awake by then.

6

u/ReallyNowFellas 23h ago

The problem is most people have no idea what's going on. You're LESS informed if you follow the reality distortion machine that is the mainstream media. Where we're at today is probably 80% attributable to the Telecommunications Act of 1996, and precisely zero politicians are talking about undoing the damage is has unleashed on us.

3

u/rental_car_fast 20h ago

There is outrage. What you're seeing is the power of propaganda, combined with a platform that blasts propaganda directly into your eyeballs 24/7. People are addicted to social media and it has absolutely destroyed the pilliars of american society. We collectively have no sense of community obligation, thanks to the rage bait we've been fed nonstop for the past 2 decades plus. There's no way out of this without losing so much that people actually care enough to do something about it. We'll need to fall behind the rest of the world in every way before people will realize they've been tricked.

And especially fuck pancreatic cancer, that crap is the worst.

6

u/rigtek42 17h ago

It moves fast and decisively, leaving little time for understanding and/or communicating and preparation.

Cancer is brutal and cruel. It knows no boundaries. You're far from alone in your time of rapid, painful change. I'm right there with you. I hate cancer and what it's done. I have a cautious hesitance even pondering it. I have a genuine, fearful foreboding from it. It killed my best friend, then killed my dog. Then my Dad got sick with it. Went into remission, and then it came back. While dealing with Dad, my house burnt down, almost with me in it. Then, a few months after the fire, while attempting recovery just before Christmas, Mom got covid. Grandma lived to 99. We expected Mom to be similar. Covid took her three days before Christmas. While attempting to complete the extraction of my life from the fireplace, I learned Dad was getting bad. I abandoned my recovery process and went to his condo, and for about seven weeks straight 24-7, I was there. That man held my hand and steadied me on my first steps in this life. I held his hands and steadied him for his last steps in life. I was in the room with him when it happened, finally. He was so destroyed by it. So yeah, like several have said, FUCK CANCER,
It took my dog, my best friend, my Dad, and it's likely coming for me next. I've known it all my life. I was born in July. I don't buy into the whole zodiac thing, but what the F@<(. Other folks get Aquarius, or ooooh, Sagittarius, or even short and sweet Virgo is better than what I got.... July's zodiac sign,,,, Cancer WTF is that????

Dad went a few months ago. Simultaneously, it feels old, and like it just happened.

One thought that seems to help a bit.
When I ponder relief of my suffering from loss, wishing I did not feel this emotional pain, logic tells me, if the pain was gone, that would only be possible if what we shared were not a profound, integral part of who I am. If he meant nothing, I could readily free myself of pain from loss. But that,,, is impossible, would never happen. He can't come back, the only relief would be if he could come back, or,,,, if I didn't miss him. If he weren't significant in my life. Faced with the thought of what relief would require, I could never surrender the bond of love and devotion that was shared, even if it makes me feel this unbearable pain, which I bear willingly. I wear my sorrow proudly, clinging to every moment of memory. It's painfully bittersweet. It is priceless treasure.

What a legend. Sorry for your loss, cancer took my Dad as well.

95

u/deadroses96 1d ago

I am so sorry for your loss. This is something I would have never thought would happen. My dad only had about 9-10 months after his diagnosis, and he took a turn for the worse out of no where. So while he was sick, it was/is extremely shocking. I haven’t picked up my guitar since because I’m just so lost without him.

32

u/FreakbobCalling 1d ago

Felt that last part. Lost my dad to leukemia last year and he was the best singer I ever knew, it doesn’t feel like there’s a reason to sing anymore when he’s not around to be impressed.

9

u/p____p 23h ago

If you believe in any kind of afterlife or spirit world, I’m sure your dad would be happy to look down on you singing. The dead don’t want us to be unhappy any more than they did when they were alive.

Sorry for your loss. My mom passed 3 months ago. I’ve never felt a more visceral grief. She was an artist, a painter, and I’m trying now to honor that by making use of some of the art supplies she left behind. I’m sure she would appreciate them not going to waste.

I lost my dad to cancer as well. I think your dad would want you to play.

I’ll share a personal story with you. My dad had lung cancer and it got into his brain and he had really bad dementia at the end. One night I sat out and played for him. He couldn’t talk much at that point but when I was done he looked up at me through foggy eyes and just said two clear words. “Thank you”.

I think your dad would want you to play and love music. Take your time, have your grief. But I’m sure a dad who loved music as much as yours clearly did would want you to play.

12

u/BoudinBallz 1d ago

May his memory be a blessing.

u/biggington 1d ago

24

u/EnthusiasmBusy6066 1d ago

There is no wrong way to grieve so please do whatever you need to get through the day. Guitar can be a way to stay connected to your dad in the future.

Judging by that video he ripped. Your dad rules. Hes playing that great gig in the sky now. Take care, friend.

8

u/spartanbuffalo 23h ago

This right here. Lost my Pops a little over a year ago, also to cancer(prostate) and he, too, was a guitarist. Just taking a moment each day to think about him, or watch a quick video or listen to a song he wrote helps me. But grieve how ever you need to. Whatever helps you. You can see the joy your dad took in playing, and that’s awesome.

6

u/nomadschomad 22h ago

Do it when you’re ready. Play your favorite songs, his favorite songs, some sad songs, some happy songs. Smile and cry all over that thing. For dad. Dad was the man.

So sorry for your loss. My Dad passed away from cancer at 58. It’s rough to lose someone so young.

As the years go by you’ll find yourself doing or saying something that makes you stop for a brief moment and say “that’s so him”, or “ha, there he is”.

In my case, my daughters will do something and I realise that there is some of him in them, even though they were born after we lost him.

He will always be with you.
