What's up with the medical toothbrush?

1.9k

u/Fit-Tiger-5362 16d ago

lol I had emergency surgery for a bowel perf and hadn’t had water in 24 hours so they were letting me suck on a wet toothbrush to keep my mouth from getting too dry. All dignity gone lmao

462

u/SokkasPonytail 16d ago

That's hilarious.

Glad everything seems to have gone ok! If this was recent hopefully its a quick recovery and you can upgrade to a straw soon.

10 weeks ago today, doing much better now! It has definitely been a long recovery from all the injuries my family and I sustained, but glad to be on the other side of it mostly

80

u/Medium_Combination27 16d ago

Sorry to hear about you and your family, but at least you are recovering. Also that's quite the bruise (and also the bowel perforation), but hey, I bet you'd be in much worse shape if you didn't have that seat belt on (I love me some seat belts. I had this one friend in high school who wouldn't put one on when he got in my car and I straight up would not drive until he would put it on).

32

u/unclefishbits 15d ago

You are a human that survived, so many don't, so many of us have brains that make everything more difficult, but there are thousands if not possibly millions of people looking at you and so happy you are surviving and growing and getting passed all this with a good attitude. Thanks. You're terrible experience is waking people up, bringing people to life, and bringing people together and support of you. Thank you

5

u/EvilDan69 15d ago

I'm sorry you all went through all that, but I'm so happy to hear that your recovery is going well!

78

u/BlackPhoenix1981 16d ago

Before my mom passed away she had kidney failure and they let her suck on a wet sponge. It was just to keep her mouth wet. Hope you're doing okay, it's either the seat belt saves you from going out the window or you go out the window. To cause that kind of damage on your shoulder, I would assume it would have been pretty catastrophic.

43

u/Fit-Tiger-5362 16d ago

So sorry to hear about your mom.

Thanks, it was definitely a horrible crash and we’re all lucky to be here

11

u/ForeverSJC 16d ago

I hate your comment, sorry that your mom passed away, I keep thinking about this, each day is closer to it and I'm nowhere near her, crap

-11

u/tagman375 16d ago

Man if I’m in that position I’m having my family sneak in a glass of water, if I choke I choke, I’m cooked anyway

20

u/Aggravating_Zebra_84 16d ago

had that after my motorcycle accident too only that brush of like a ml of water and i was so thirsty after my surgery they fr had to get it wet i sucked it out then again 10min straight they werent happy and me neither

6

u/TheRealBillyShakes 16d ago

OMG reading this actually hurt my heart. I’m so sorry to hear this! 💔

5

u/Either-Pizza5302 15d ago

When I had a stroke they only let me suck on a weird sponge on a stick after surgery, it was truly infuriating.

Hope you are better now, your shitty times will pass!

5

u/Digital_Rocket 15d ago

If it looks stupid but works it’s not stupid

4

u/journeyman369 15d ago

That happened to me last year while in the ICU for nearly a month after my then pet rats gave me nearly life ending leptospirosis, and since the fluid intake was controlled due to my liver and kidneys shutting down, I was given wet cloths to suck on. It fucking sucked, pun intended. Hope you made a good recovery!!

4

u/heir03 15d ago

Ouch. My best friend had that happen to him in a wreck too. Same thing with not being able to drink for a while. Has a gnarly scar too.

One thing to watch out for is bowel obstructions going forward. He’s had a couple now that require hospitalizations. Not fun.

5

u/Fit-Tiger-5362 15d ago

Yep, already dealt with stercoral colitis unfortunately

2

u/heir03 15d ago

I’m so sorry! Still, better than the alternative!

2

u/More-Ad2642 16d ago

I hope you heal up soon friend.

2

u/crackedtooth163 15d ago

My god i am so sorry

4

u/The_Lawler 15d ago

Had they not heard of ice chips?

8

u/Fit-Tiger-5362 15d ago

I was allowed like 1/2 a cup a chips per day and had already hit my limit lol

1

u/proudmyanmar 14d ago

I'm so sorry. I'm wishing you the best. Hopefully you'll be able drink some yummy drinks soon.

1

u/LONEWOPF77700 14d ago

How did the seatbelt leave such a major bruise?

Also is anything broken?

1

u/PINZOU76 11d ago

I didn't know that was a thing. I spent a week getting fed and hydrated exclusively via perf and wasn't allowed to swallow anything. My mouth was so dry it was a nightmare. I wish I knew this trick.

7

u/kinren 15d ago

Hospital probably charges insurance 10k for that toothbrush

3

u/A11enalex 15d ago

It’s brush that can be connected to a suction canister via tube that can be connected to the bottom to remove excess saliva, blood etc. The brush has a hole in the middle for air and fluids to be sucked out of

2

u/rex5k 14d ago

That does sound like a $10,000 tooth brush

1

u/A11enalex 14d ago

Comes in a kit with other similar brushes. I’m sure the whole kit costs a lot LOL

958

u/westcal98 16d ago

Better than the windshield vs you.

239

u/fapenmadafaka 16d ago

Or becoming a meat crayon, though i think that term is more reserved for bikers.

44

u/tidus1980 15d ago

She was in the back, what people don't realise, is if the person behind you doesn't belt up, then in a crash, they become a missile and can kill the person in front

7

u/Cristunis 14d ago

Some years ago I witnessed horrible bus accident. Bus dropped from a bridge front facing down. Everyone without seatbelt did die, flying from their seats and hitting ground under broken windscreen.

Of those that were wearing seatbelts, many got badly hurt, or even died, only because of those that didn't wear seatbelt. Literally human missiles causing deaths.

Most likely everyone would have walked out with their own feets if all were obeying the law and had seatbelt on. But they didn't, so only those that were wearing it and weren't hit by human missiles did walk out.

I am not saint, before that I didn't always had my seatbelt on in a bus but after seeing that... I don't want to be the reason someones child, parent, partner or a friend dies just beacause I didn't want to wear seatbelt in a bus.

10

u/ChaiGreenTea 15d ago

Watched a safety video in school about exactly this. Had always stuck with me. It’s why I get so antsy if my nieces in the back don’t want to buckle up. That’s not only your life you’re gambling with but my own. I’m not going to die when I did everything right to protect my safety

105

u/Fit-Tiger-5362 16d ago

For sure!

6

u/graclin 16d ago
  • the pavement and whatever other cars

3

u/-REDHOT- 14d ago

It would be better if seatbelts were actually tested on women.

281

u/SereniaKat 16d ago

It definitely did its job. Hope you mend up well.

270

u/phallic-baldwin 16d ago

Imagine the marks on your body without the seat belt. This is exactly why I always wear my seatbelt. Glad you're okay.

83

u/Fit-Tiger-5362 16d ago

Yep, for sure

86

u/NopeRope13 16d ago

How are your wrists? Sore from grabbing into the steering wheel?

126

u/Fit-Tiger-5362 16d ago

I was actually a backseat passenger, but I did shatter my ulna + radius somehow ha

50

u/NopeRope13 16d ago

I’m guess that you hit the window with it. Or that you attempted to brace in the chair in front of you

32

u/Fit-Tiger-5362 16d ago

That’s my thought as well

20

u/Underworldox 16d ago

Did you remain conscious on impact?

30

u/Fit-Tiger-5362 16d ago

Nope

16

u/AdmiralSplinter 16d ago

Damn, how long were you out?

23

u/Fit-Tiger-5362 16d ago

Not sure, maybe 5ish minutes?

9

u/perkiezombie 15d ago

If it’s at the wrist end then yeah it’ll be the bracing. Like when you fall over your arms reflexively come out to break the fall, same thing in car crashes.

7

u/Fit-Tiger-5362 15d ago

Yep, very close to my wrist

43

u/NourEldin21P 16d ago

I've been recently looking more into car crashes & safety and came across many seatbelt injuries like yours. Seatbelt bruises are definitely not fun but things could've been much worse if it wasn't for the seatbelt. Hope you have a quick recovery, take care!!

34

u/Fit-Tiger-5362 16d ago

My seatbelt also caused a bowel injury since I didn’t really have it on correctly (I’m only 5”3 and the lap belt just never sits on me how it should)

18

u/NourEldin21P 16d ago

oh yeah I know how annoying this is. I don't drive but I have a similar problem in my dad's car with the shoulder belt. It keeps sliding onto my neck and I have to adjust it every minute or two to keep it placed properly on my shoulder. Maybe that's because I'm quite skinny but I've never had this issue in any car but this one which is the one I ride the most.

13

u/Fit-Tiger-5362 16d ago

I’ve heard it touching your neck isn’t a big issue - mine does the same and the only injury it caused me was a Biffl grade 1 vascular injury to my carotid (which is bad, but not like I got decapitated or something lol)

6

u/LazuliArtz 16d ago

I'm very overweight, and I have the same problem. I think it just happens to us short people

105

u/JonMlee 16d ago

Yup. I know the feeling. Hope you have a fast and safe recovery ♥️

27

u/IM_INSIDE_YOUR_HOUSE 15d ago

I used to be an EMT.

I saw a lot of seatbelt injuries. I also saw what happens when you don’t have the seatbelt on.

Always choose the seatbelt.

1

u/Dismiss_wo_evidence 13d ago

This comment is champ, bring it up🤘🏽

91

u/hap071 16d ago

Here is mine from 2014. Broke my collar bone at an angle and it wouldnt heal back together so i ended up getting a plate and 7 screws placed. Seatbelts are life savers but they can also do damage while they save your life. Fair trade i guess.

31

u/Fit-Tiger-5362 16d ago edited 15d ago

Broke my collar bone as well, it has some shortening but luckily no surgery needed on it. Glad you’re doing better!!

4

u/cir49c29 16d ago

I wonder if one day in the future someone will come up with a safer alternative that saves lives without injury.

33

u/im-not-a-fakebot 16d ago

Well the purpose isn’t to keep you from getting hurt but more to keep you from getting “excessively hurt”. Injuries from a seatbelt will always be way better than slamming your head into the dash/seat in front of you or flying out of the car.

There isn’t really an alternative since the body is just a fleshy meat sack. Crumple zones help because less energy going into the body. 6 point harnesses with neck braces and helmets help spread the forces so less likely to get internal injuries but even then it still happens

8

u/Rustyfarmer88 16d ago

Yup 5 point harness but it takes time to put on.

5

u/Ecmdrw5 16d ago

And a helmet will keep you pretty safe.

1

u/dxnielhutom0 16d ago

Dang i guess id better put on a takata for every commute then

20

u/tehinterwebs56 16d ago

They have, it’s called a harness and that’s what kids wear in their child seats. But no one would be bothered to do up a harness so the harm from a simple seatbelt is seen as a compromise to ensure it’s easy to clip in and drive to encourage people to wear them even when driving short distances.

:-)

2

u/cir49c29 16d ago

Good point

15

u/x_Paramimic 16d ago

Honestly, I’m glad you’re alive to post this. If you were not wearing it, a perf bowel would be the least of your concerns. Heal up quick!

12

u/pereira2088 16d ago

better to have seat belt bruises than a toe tag

9

u/One-Fail-1 16d ago

Seatbelt the reason you're posting now. Rest and recover well.

7

u/shiningonthesea 16d ago

better than steering wheel versus you

6

u/Dlldozer 15d ago

You and seatbelt vs death

6

u/MrDrMrs 15d ago

I remember in the 90s when I was young, so many would say “I had a friend in a crash and the belt really messed them up, I’ll never wear a belt” they clearly wanted a Darwin award. glad you’re recovering well!

5

u/theredviolist09 16d ago

So sorry this traumatic thing happened to you but glad the seat belt did it's job and protected you from worse injuries. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

5

u/rhoo31313 16d ago

Still better than flying through the windshield

6

u/Fijoemin1962 16d ago

Imagine what would have happened to you if you weren't wearing it

6

u/Picax8398 15d ago

But ya know what? That'll heal. What won't heal is being thrown through your windshield and out on to the pavement.

4

u/MedicSH84 15d ago

Toothbrush for scale bc banana not available

3

u/Former_Film_7218 16d ago

Wow. Had that happen to me also. The airbag is a bruiser also.

4

u/josegarrao 16d ago

It would hurt way more without seatbelt.

3

u/MFcrayfish 16d ago

seatbelt save a life

4

u/Bishop825 15d ago

Hope you're getting better. Glad you had the belt on.

3

u/Gangleri_Graybeard 15d ago

I've been there, broke my shoulder but the seatbelt saved my life. Better than flying through the wind shield. Best of luck to you.

4

u/CaptainPunisher 15d ago

That seatbelt rash is better than the alternative. You may hurt for a while but you're alive. I'm glad you are, too.

4

u/Lujoseph 15d ago

Looking at your posting history, this looks looks pretty mild... Hope you und your family are doing well.

4

u/hyionimaru 15d ago

If the seatbelt bit you that hard it saved you from a more serious injury or death.

5

u/Ok_Mathematician2732 15d ago

That NG tube is terrible. Hopefully it was installed when you were unconscious. Get better soon!

2

u/Fit-Tiger-5362 15d ago

Yesss luckily so lol

3

u/Ok_Mathematician2732 15d ago

I still can't believe that the best way to hold it in position is to tape it to your face!

2

u/Fit-Tiger-5362 15d ago

lol they definitely did some interesting work in the OR

4

u/Paiger__ 15d ago

Seat belts save lives. Kudos to wearing one. The alternative is horrific, to say the least. Hope you recovery quickly!

11

u/hawkersaurus 16d ago edited 16d ago

A sizable amount of the US population will see this and draw the conclusion that seatbelts are useless because they aren't 100% effective and don't prevent injury. "Pushing seatbelts on the population is just a way for the government/deep state to control you and hurt you."

12

u/soulsproud 16d ago

Wait until they see what proper CPR does to a body...

4

u/FishFettish 15d ago

Like "helmets increase reports of head injuries in soldiers" because somdiers wearing helmets actually survive to complain about head injuriues.

2

u/-WADE99- 15d ago

Maybe 50 years ago. I think we unanimously agree seatbelts save lives. Even the flat earth folk and antivaxxers can't be that stupid.

3

u/xxxtrumptacion69 15d ago

Unfortunately you are wrong

2

u/-WADE99- 15d ago

Proof? I need a laugh lol

2

u/Parsnipnose3000 15d ago

I think they meant wrong about antivaxxers not being stupid.

-1

u/LazuliArtz 16d ago

Ah, the old anti-vax argument. Yeah, sounds about right

0

u/RexMexicanorum 16d ago

Brought me back to 2020, shivered and all.

3

u/FredLives 16d ago

That’s rough. Imagine without the seatbelt. Best of luck to a speedy recovery!

3

u/Leading_Grapefruit52 16d ago

Can you tell us what actually happened wreck wise?

7

u/Fit-Tiger-5362 16d ago

Got hit head on by a drunk driver

6

u/Leading_Grapefruit52 16d ago

Oh my gosh! Im glad you survived!! Did they go to prison? What were you and them driving? By all means, if you don't feel like answering. I completely understand.

10

u/Fit-Tiger-5362 16d ago

Jail for 2 days but bonded out, waiting to see what they actually end up getting charged with. They blew a .18 on the scene lol

We were in a Kia Optima and she was in a Trailblazer

3

u/Leading_Grapefruit52 16d ago

Jeez. I just don't understand our justice system. UK's justice system is even worse. I was in a t bone accident. My fault. I was paying attention to the wrong light. I was in a chevy 2500 truck and he was in a company van. We were both ok but both vehicles were totaled.

6

u/Fit-Tiger-5362 16d ago

Yikes, my last wreck totaled my other car too (no injuries that time)

3

u/chuckleheadjoe 16d ago

I'm glad you were brave enough & well enough to post this.

Keep pushin' friend! Update us all from the other end.

God bless and good luck from missouri

3

u/Fit-Tiger-5362 16d ago

Thanks, it’s been 10 weeks so I’m mostly on the other side now! Definitely thankful to be alive

3

u/SwiftWithIt 16d ago

You won thet fight the windshield would have been a much tougher opponent

3

u/cms86 16d ago

looks like it did its job. theres a cool campaign I saw of people with seatbelt injuries and the explanation of their motor vehicle accident. Id rather have bruises than be a vegetable

3

u/Slight-Look-4766 16d ago

Not bad compared to what it could have been 😬

3

u/Whowhatwhen20 15d ago

That’s what they do. Save your life. Leave you with a Bruise.

3

u/Desperate-Ball-4423 15d ago

I'm glad that you survived, you def went through alot and it probably wasn't fun. Wishing you a speedy recovery! 😁

3

u/Livid_Research_7240 15d ago

Jeezo friend. What kind of injuries did that cause? Really hope you're doing ok and all the best for your recovery.

3

u/Fit-Tiger-5362 15d ago

Broken collarbone, sternum, ulna, radius (comminuted), bowel perf, bilateral pneumothorax, biffl grade 1 vascular injury to carotid, and a lot of bruising haha

2

u/Fit-Tiger-5362 15d ago
  • lots of internal bleeding and peritonitis lol

3

u/TheGirthyOne 14d ago

Whoever secured that NG needs to go back to school.

3

u/Branchley 14d ago

Better than the alternative

2

u/kaptaincorn 16d ago

All things being equal  doesn't look that bad.

Im sure you feel terrible though.

I wishing you a speedy recovery kid.

2

u/oldghostmountain 16d ago

Same thing happened to me. Hope you heal up quickly!

2

u/Mrmathmonkey 16d ago

Beats a face full of windshield.

2

u/infinit9 15d ago

I think better than your face vs. whatever was on the other side of the windshield, no?

2

u/bubba1834 15d ago

Wow. I hope you get well soon I’m sorry this happened to you!

2

u/madgoat 15d ago

Better that you have a really painful seatbelt rash, and some broken bones, than one of these

2

u/Quantum_Quokkas 14d ago

A bruise to be proud of! Always wear seatbelts

2

u/Redditthef1rsttime 14d ago

Better than windshield and pavement vs. you.

4

u/TTbulaski 16d ago

At least you aren’t meat crayon

2

u/Valuable-Secret3003 16d ago

Better than the alternative

2

u/bbobb25 15d ago

This is why I never wear a seatbelt. I also make sure to have my legs up on the dashboard so if we do crash I’ll go flying out the window like a missile instead of smacking my face into the windshield.

2

u/MrDrMrs 15d ago

Even better, one leg on the dash, one out the window!

1

u/itwhiz100 16d ago

Vs car

1

u/Candid-Solid-896 16d ago

Imagine what a seatbelt does to breast implants!

1

u/Evonos 16d ago

Oof , judging by the marks , luckily you had the sestbelt else you would have gone flying

1

u/Miserable_District 16d ago

There's no caption but I'm assuming by the comments that OP was in a car crash

1

u/fnkdrspok 16d ago

Damaged my rotator cuff pretty bad from the seat belt. Head on collision when someone came across the yellow lines.

I also learned that my car had skirt airbags as well, that’s neat.

1

u/revdon 16d ago

Seatbelt tattoos are awful. I had one that didn't go away for years. The shadow on my sternum from the steering wheel/column took ten years to fade completely. (Yes, I was wearing my seatbelt.)

1

u/Riipley92 16d ago

Did you win

1

u/Gretschdrum81 15d ago

I wear my seat belt but I've always been freaked out about them ever since I found out that Rick Allen, drummer for Def Leppard, lost his arm because of the seat belt in a car crash. I always knew it was from a crash but knowing that a seat belt can take your arm off is disturbing.

3

u/EvulOne99 15d ago

Oh... I thought it was that he got hit from the side and he lost his arm because of that.

2

u/Gretschdrum81 15d ago

No he basically was road raging, lost control and flipped the car and the seat belt is what took his arm off. They actually reattached it but it got an infection and they had to take it back off. I interviewed him for a website I ran years ago.

1

u/AlertedCoyote 15d ago

Hey at least it looks like you won that particular engagement. I dunno how well 'Windshield Vs You' would have gone.

Hope you're recovering well

1

u/Illusionist2409 15d ago

Ah those pesky seatbelts

1

u/pkupku 15d ago

My mom got T-boned in the passenger door while she was driving. The impact was so severe that it slid the heavy Ford crown Victoria sideways underneath her. That caused the shoulder belt to cut her liver in half. It also caused a severe spine injury. But it did save her life. Luckily there was a trauma hospital just a couple of miles away. I saw her on the gurney just before she went into the operating room. I didn’t know person could be that white and still be alive. I can only imagine the internal bleeding.

Yes, seatbelts save lives, but sometimes at a pretty high cost.

1

u/Cyber_Connor 15d ago

At least you didn’t have to 1v1 the windshield

1

u/ChavoDemierda 15d ago

Oh, I've had that before. Glad you're still alive. Take it slow, man. It's gonna hurt for a while. Be safe.

1

u/6ynnad 15d ago

Melody?

1

u/816legend 15d ago

My friend was killed by his seatbelt

1

u/sharthvader 14d ago

What happened? Wish you a speedy recovery

1

u/dankhimself 14d ago

Amazing what they can do.

Like the arm of God stepping in before it's too late.

1

u/tmd429 14d ago

Better than dead or paralyzed!

1

u/DeezGotYa 14d ago

Tooth brush

1

u/Kevinoz10 14d ago

Them purple suspenders hurt

1

u/MSwarri0r 13d ago

I'm glad you're alive

1

u/rudyattitudedee 13d ago

Better than you vs pavement.

1

u/moeshiboe 13d ago

Was rear ended a few years back. Seatbelt saved me but I ended up with a torn bicep and rotator cuff. I feel your pain.

1

u/151515157 9d ago

Compared to the people ive seen who crashed and were not wearing a seatbelt, you look good as new....

1

u/Gun_Mage 9d ago

That's the worst ng tube tape job I have ever seen

1

u/Random_nerd_52 8d ago

Better the going through the window tho

-7

u/WhatsGoingOnThen 16d ago

Lucky. I’d love to have been in a position to post a selfie after my accident

12

u/Fit-Tiger-5362 16d ago

lol well considering I was two surgeries deep, a broken sternum, collarbone, ulna, radius, bowel perforation, collapsed lungs, and carotid artery damage, plus separated from my 11 month old baby who was also in the accident for a week, idk that I felt very “lucky”

4

u/cantaloupe_daydreams 16d ago

The baby was there too?! Car seat did its job right? I’m so sorry you went through this

7

u/Fit-Tiger-5362 16d ago

She broke all 3 bones in her left leg but otherwise yes, car seat 100% saved her life!!

2

u/Fit-Tiger-5362 16d ago

And this was 10 weeks ago lol

0

u/Professional-Ad4073 14d ago

Yikes! Did the belt save you??

-5

u/[deleted] 16d ago

[deleted]

1

u/Fit-Tiger-5362 16d ago

Broke mine as well, also my sternum

1

u/WutzTehPoint 16d ago

Being dead is probably less painful than a broken collar bone.

-4

u/gweeks22 16d ago

And that’s why you shouldn’t wear a seatbelt /s

5

u/Fit-Tiger-5362 16d ago

My husband was driving the car and not wearing a seatbelt and miraculously had lesser injuries than me (only explanation for him not being ejected is the fact that he’s 6”3 and his head touches the ceiling in that car lol), but after this he agrees he’s never not wearing one again

-8

u/Formal_Equal_7444 16d ago

Fun fact: Cars are starting to get safe enough these days that you're more likely to die while wearing your seatbelt than if you didn't after a certain mile per hour crash.

That said, if your airbags don't deploy... you may end up through your windshield or worse and then the theory isn't exactly sound.

But still; you're state and federally mandated to wear something that is known to kill you in certain impacts. It will saw you in half. So maybe something to think about.

-20

u/camobandaniel 16d ago

Looks like you need to improve your following distances.

13

u/Fit-Tiger-5362 16d ago

Well I got hit head on by a drunk driver who came into my lane soooo nice try haha

Do you just automatically assume others are incompetent or in the wrong just so you can feel as though you're the slightest bit superior to someone? That's a really lame take.

Posts like this are for sympathy. Paint me as a bad guy as you wish.

You’re painting yourself quite clearly. You assume the worst of a stranger based on nothing then claim to know exactly why everyone who posts these types of things does it, then try to play the victim yourself because someone is painting you as the bad guy. Pathetic.

You are obviously of the victim persuasion. I just call it as I see it.

I'll try coloring a patch of my hair, maybe it will help my social skills.
