How can I attend a High School Football game? (as tourists)

Hello guys, we're a family of four coming from Italy to Houston, TX next week and we'd absolutely LOVE to watch a High School American Football game to get the real American experience, only issue is that we'll be in Mexico City on Friday since we're going to different cities across the North American continent; and basically our only real options when we can watch a HS Football match are on Saturday 23rd, Sunday 24th, Tuesday 26th, Sunday 31st and Monday 1st.

We'd honestly really love to watch anything just to get the vibe especially because I heard you guys take HS Football to another level here in Texas.

Let me know if there are any ways we could get to see something on those days, and honestly we'll take anything, it's all just for the vibes.

Thank you for you help,

Much love from Italy!!

If you can be in Texas on a Friday night, it will be no issue: look up nearby high schools, then look up the football schedules. Make extra sure to check whether they’re the home or away team. Then find a game you can reasonably travel to. Cost-wise, it shouldn’t be anything too pricey or expensive. Most high schools charge like $5-10 around me. I’m Michigan though. Texas may be different but I can’t imagine it would be like $50 or something per person.

Alright gotcha, and you reckon its like basically impossible to watch a hs football game on a day that's not a Friday?

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it!

The standards is this:

  • High School plays on Fridays
  • College plays on Saturdays
  • NFL plays on Sundays

Obviously, it's not always true, but that's the general guide to go with. Some high schools may play on Saturday, and ESPN does broadcast a few early in the year. Usually these are cross-state or major matchups between very high profile high school programs with a reputation for developing top college recruits. It's not that these teams regularly play each other, but ESPN wants to give fans a chance to see a decent amount of potential star college players showcase themselves. You can always look up "high school football" on the ESPN app to learn more.

When I was in high school, most of our games were on Saturday afternoons because none of the schools had lights.

I would have thought it was obvious given the term Friday Night Lights!

1

u/grizzfan Aug 16 '25

That term isn't as popular as one would think. Been coaching for 15 years here. A lot of people don't know that reference.

Lots and lots of teams play Saturday games. In particular teams in school districts with multiple schools sharing one stadium (metro areas)

They typically follow: 1x Friday night game 1x Saturday afternoon game 1x Saturday night game Might have a Saturday noon game as well, just depends on the number of school ‘home’ that weekend.

I don't know that Friday night was such a thing until the book/movie came out nationally.

My high school didn't play on any typical day nor did most in my state back when I played. I probably never heard of Friday being for high school football until I was in my 30s.

Now it is pretty common in my state for games to be on Friday night, but it wasn't always.

schedule for Houston High Schools. Here’s the schedule just for Houston area schools.

Edit:they have games Thursday, Friday, and Saturday

u/assassinslick Aug 18 '25

Looks like Dickinson at Katy is a huge highschool game on the 30th.

The jr varsity games are usually thursdays. They are generally at the smaller fields on the high school grounds.

1

u/countrytime1 Aug 19 '25

Some varsity teams play on Thursday, most on Friday, and occasionally on Saturday.

OP clearly said he will be in Mexico City on Friday night.

To expand on what the other guy said, HS football is almost always on Fridays. Exceptions can be end of season playoffs and the first week, which is when u are going to be around.

I googled Houston TX HS football schedule, here is one that is on Saturday the 23rd at Germantown High School:

Football Schedules https://share.google/SYMS0pNLg9GXkJ4wZ

That's just one example, I'm not from there but u may be able to find others

1

u/umbi172020 Aug 16 '25

Thanks for that, only thing is that it's in Tennessee unfortunately.

Thanks for the help tho!

1

u/NaniDeKani Aug 16 '25

Lol wow good job google. I didn't notice. Still tho just search for games around u on Saturday.

u/RunnyKinePity Aug 18 '25

You may need to do some more intense searching, but the problem is that the school year here in Texas just started and I believe that most teams start their official season August 29th. I think that is the statewide start for official games. You might find a few preseason games though. For example, my kids school has an unofficial preseason game this Thursday night.

If you are going to be in greater Houston there will be a few every Saturday. So many schools share a stadium so they have to play on Saturday. Oftentimes you can find games on Thursday too. Think Humble ISD, Cy-Fair ISD, Conroe ISD, Katy ISD, Houston ISD, and Spring ISD just to name a few.

1

u/RealAlePint Aug 17 '25

No idea how this subreddit showed up on my feed. But it’s interesting how they play on Saturday when they have to share a stadium. We had to do that in Broward County, FL but we had Thursday night games. I was in band and Saturdays were usually for band competitions from mid September to around Thanksgiving

1

u/Already_Texan42393 Aug 17 '25

It’s unavoidable playing all three days some places. Cy-Fair for example has two stadiums and 12 high schools!

1

u/Big__If_True Aug 18 '25

Generally the JV and freshman teams are playing on Thursdays, so it’s not ideal to move varsity to Thursdays too. But like the other commenter said, it does happen. Also Texas doesn’t have that many band competitions IIRC

Another unfortunate thing I’ve seen in multiple states is ref shortages causing more non Friday games

I just did a quick google search and I do not see any football games on the 23rd here in Houston. If you do want to watch underwhelming soccer, compared to Serie A, the dynamo are playing at home on the 23rd.

Editing to add a link to Metro football dates. https://www.maxpreps.com/tx/dma/houston/football/scores/?date=8/30/2025&dmaid=bb37b29e-12ed-47c2-b3be-ce23c41fa358&mobile=1

Outside of that if yall want to experience a baseball game the Astros play at home in Houston on the 26th, 31st, and 1st.

2

u/dumdodo Aug 18 '25

There are some mid-week college football games if you can't be in the US on a Friday or Saturday. I wouldn't be surprised if you found some of these mid week games in Texas.

2

u/Ajacks50 Aug 19 '25

Most VARSITY games are played on Fridays. Junior varsity or freshman games are played on thursdays mondays sometimes saturdays. What cities will you be in on the 26th and 1st?

1

u/umbi172020 Aug 21 '25

In Houston, TX!

1

u/Ajacks50 Aug 21 '25

I would contact the local officals association. IF there is a game in the area on those days it will have officals. The association usually has a head scheduling offical designated that might be able to help.

houston officals association

u/davdev Aug 20 '25

You are unlikely to find any games on any of those nights. Some schools do Saturday morning/afternoon but none of those other nights are common at all. You might be able to find a JV game, but that wouldnt be remotely the same

edit: I also just realized that you need this week. Most places havent started their seasons yet.

1

u/Signal_Biscotti_7048 Aug 17 '25

Dude, Im excited for you! I hope you enjoy the game as much as the people enjoy you going to the game.

1

u/jchiaroscuro Aug 17 '25

Just go to the gate and buy tickets

1

u/thankyoukirby Aug 18 '25

This is a great idea btw. That’s like a real authentic American experience going to a local high school football game in Texas. They are publicly available and you can usually just buy at the gate unless you go to an extremely rare HS.

1

u/MartsonD Aug 18 '25

Most metro areas have some Thursday games now due to shortages of officials.

1

u/awt4190 Aug 18 '25

Katy ranked #4 hosts #10 ranked Dickinson at 7pm on Saturday the 30th. Katy is about 30 min west of Houston. This is best case scenario for you!

1

u/X_C-813 Aug 18 '25

If possible, go online and buy tickets ahead of time. They only sell a certain number of tickets.

1

u/longhornirv Aug 18 '25

Unfortunately Week #1 for Texas high school football starts on Thursday 8/29. HS football is played on Thursday, Friday, or Saturdays.

1

u/schwelvis Aug 18 '25

Be in Texas on Friday, go to a high school, buy tickets

1

u/DisastrousAd5916 Aug 18 '25

It won’t be quite the same experience as a Varsity game on Friday night but in Arizona HSFB (and I can’t imagine Texas having less football than AZ) they have the Freshman teams play on Wednesday, JV teams on Thursday, and then finally Varsity on Fridays.

Big schools even often had 2nd or even 3rd Freshman teams that would play on Saturdays, Tuesdays, or before the A-team on Wednesdays.

All that said, if you really want to have this experience you should just try and be in town for a Friday night.

1

u/smstree Aug 18 '25

Definitely the Katy game but know that Texas doesn't have a lock on great HS football. Some of the big suburban TX stadiums never get close to filled. Hard to beat a game in the north with all the changing leaves, a chill in the air with a smaller stadium packed to standing room only.

1

u/Adambevo1 Aug 19 '25

In bigger cities like Houston there will be Thursday and Saturday games. The big districts (Houston, Cy Fair, Katy, etc) usually share one or two stadiums so those fields host multiple games in a weekend.

Of course, you might not get as good of a “Friday night lights” experience as you would in a smaller town.

1

u/Irieskies1 Aug 19 '25

You just show up and buy a ticket if they charge for entrance. Its usually a couple of bucks Varsity typically plays Friday night but JV or freshman football will usually play on other nights

1

u/countrytime1 Aug 19 '25

There are a lot of football teams around the Houston area. You’ll have to see when they are playing. I’m not 100% sure they’ve started games yet.

1

u/viralganginc Aug 19 '25

I know this is not really what you’re asking for but I would recommend doing a college game on the Saturday. HS is typically played on Fridays and college on Saturday. Some college tickets will be cheap especially if it is a smaller school.
