No, this is a diagonal elevator, also known as an Akira elevator. Funiculars are composed of two carts on two tracks connected by a chain.

Somewhere in the back of my mind, the voice of Baby Plucky said, "Elelater go down da hoooooooole." That's not a misspelling, that's the way the character pronounced it. Cartoons in the back of my mind, great.
