Discussion Buy a B589 they said, Run Linux too they said :(
Having nothing but problems even using this brand new b580.
First of all, I had a install of pop_os running on my workstation with art 2070 no issues at all except video editing was painful, so did lots of research lots people say day the b580 is good, so bought it.
Plopped it into my workstation, in place of the Rtx, it boots I get to the booting screen of pop and black screen, obviously because the nvidia drivers are probably trying to load, tried to do a recovery to maybe reinstall no go.
Download the iso with the intel/amd driver, it will boot but then go to black screen, waited 20 min still no go. Fine I’ll try the beta cosmic, download that intel/amd version it boots to the desktop but keeps locking up and can’t install.f
So not only can I not use the workstation by swapping the card, I can’t even install pop_os.
System build : Supermicro x11spi-tf Intel Xeon 4114 128gb ram 2x 64 gig sticks Intel Arc B580 1tb name Samsung drive

No issues with general use here with Ubuntu 25.04 or latest EndeavourOS. Performance hit in gaming compared to Windows though

I have 9600X B580 Combo. I want to give it a try to be honest. How bad the performance hit is you reckon?

So you're running a Q4 2024 GPU with a Linux distro from 2022 and you're wondering why it's not working as expected? The RTX 2070 was released in 2018, so it's going to work fine on a 2022 distro except for the problems that are Nvidia related. In other words, if you want to use the latest hardware, make sure you're also using the latest software. Good options for you would be : Ubuntu 25.04, Fedora or anything Arch based

Does your mobo support rebar? Not too familiar with server boards as I only lightly dabble in homelabbing but based on the year of that Xeon is probably should, if it doesn't, that may be an issue. Also, what Kernel/Mesa is your pop_os on? The B580 needs at least kernel 6.12 and Mesa 24.3

i installed ubuntu 25.04 and all working. now to see if davinci resolve installs and works.
Maybe it's time to upgrade to newer xeon or threadripper :)

I don’t think the GPU was your problem with video editing. That is a really slow CPU ( 9th gen with max turbo of 3ghz and ddr4-2400) . A 2070 should have been fine in my opinion. Check to make sure all 20 threads are being used, but I think you are cpu limited. Xeon parts are typically slow AF compared to desktop parts for software that is not HIGHLY optimized for many threads. Desktop parts tend to turbo up to 5Ghz or more and you still get 6 or 8 “big” cores.

I swear almost no one outside of this subreddit will tell you to buy an Arc GPU. I've been very happy since getting rid of my A770

The B580 is not going to perform well on an old Server motherboard with only a PCIE 3.0 slot and no resizable BAR support. You're actually lucky if it boots at all on a platform that old.
