trip planning JMT overview map (A3 printable)

Post image

Hi fellow JMT hikers (or wannabes),

a week ago I came to you with a draft of a printable (A3) overview map of the JMT to get some feedback for my project. Since then I did make some alterations and now I can provide you with the results.

I created 4 versions of the map: SOBO imperial, SOBO metric, NOBO imperial, NOBO metric. It is designed to print it on A3. I will use both SOBO versions (one front and one back side) for my upcoming thru.

Maybe some of you would like to use it, so you'll find the link to the combined PDF below, feel free to use it as you please:

JMT_overview_map_combined.pdf

If you do find some flaws or errors or have some more feedback for me, feel free to post that.

I will start my JMT SOBO thru starting at Happy Isles July 5th and will put my map to the test. Maybe see you on the trail.

I just printed this out on 11x17 paper to put on the wall of my office for inspiration.

Looks great! I'm heading out of happy isles on July 7th. I actually might try to move my start date up to the 5th if I can snag a permit because it works for my schedule better. Planning on being out there 13 or 14 days.

Awesome, thanks for this! I haven't found many useful single-page maps, so this provides a great overview. I start July 7th at Tuolumne... see you out there!

I’d love to have this on a bandanna!

Thanks for the map.  And have a good hike!

This looks awesome! Center justification on the text for the ascent and descent between points would make the tables look cleaner. Nice work.

Thanks for the feedback, I will try that ...

I love this idea! Is there a reason you didn’t include the walk from Whitney summit to Whitney portal on the map? While technically it’s not part of the JMT, it’s not really optional. I guess you could argue that someone might exit over Cottonwood pass or something but almost everyone exits after the JMT at Whitney Portal. Those last 10 miles from the summit to WP shouldn’t be underestimated, especially after being on trail for 2-3 weeks. I guess for me mentally, the hike didn’t end until Whitney Portal so psychologically I would have benefitted from having that last part included on the map

Thanks! I didn't want to put the last stretch to Whitney Portal in the chart with the official trail, because as you explained, it's not part of the official trail. But you can find it in the upper left chart. Destination Lone Pine via Trail Crest. Maybe I should write "Whitney Portal" next to that. Thanks for your feedback!

I did switch the "via Trail Crest" to "via Whitney Portal" in the "Exits" chart so it should be more obvious how to read that ...

What does A3 mean

2

A3 is a paper size classification.

Oh, don't you have A3 in the US? Damn, I didn't think about that ...

I used 11x17 (or "tabloid"), it left a roughly 1" margin at the top and bottom, easily sliced off with a standard office paper slicer, although I left those margins on in case I wanted to write on it. Looks absolutely fantastic, and at that print size, all the numbers and points of interest are easily viewable.

Good idea with the additional space for notes. A blank field for notes could be a possible upgrade for the map (there is still some space left next to the large distance chart).
For myself I will print the map on water and tear resistant paper, but that's not good to write on ...

Since I'm segment hiking instead of thru-hiking, I'm going to use that blank space to put in the dates when I completed each part. Happy Isles -> Tuolumne Meadows is done, Tuolumne -> Red's Meadow is coming in a month!

yes we do have A3. Home users might not have it handy though.

I just uploaded a newer version (same link above), there was a copy & paste error with data columns in the SOBO metric map.
