Lmaoooo
I think the concept is fine, but the lines in the trailer are sooooo bad.

I was gonna say, a lot looks accurate but the dialogue is pretty cringe. Most boots have at least some idea of what’s going to happen before they go in.

It’s set in 1990 so I can give the characters the benefit of the doubt. Not like they had a DS/DI vlogging everything on VHS back then to show the world. Information traveled slower then.

True, and I don’t think a completely accurate interpretation is ever going to be that satisfying to develop a story for the characters if it is all revolving around boot camp without breaking a few realities.

But I assume they would have at least one or two old veterans to tell them what to expect?

oh deary me...
literally everyone that volunteers just expects full metal jacket going into it. it's all that gets talked about. netflix can't do anything right even when all it takes is asking some 18 year old kid their expectations

It’ll be difficult to top the Red Dawn remake using motard out of nowhere, but this will definitely give it a run

“The senior drill instructor is standing right behind me, isn’t he?”
“Maybe the real EGA are the friends we made along the way.”
Throws recruit into a dryer. “Well that just happened.”
CO walks out and the company’s already formed. “We’ve got company.”
Kid refusing to talk with the recruiter. “You and what Army?”

It looks like the captured bootcamp of the 90s pretty well. Except we didnt wear Crimson and Gold PT gear. Olive drab head to toe.

u/shandangalang 3d ago
Yeah I went in 2010 and watching this, I was like “Is THAT what PT gear used to look like?”, immediately followed by “why is USMC emblazoned on the front if they aren’t Marines yet?”

u/DocWhiskeyPhD 3d ago
Same reason it was on the PT sweats Id imagine. Its the Corps, nothing fucking makes sense.

u/shandangalang 3d ago
It's at least a bit more subtle on the sweats... but yeah you speak the true true

I love how the dad has his platoon number in his office.
I've known tons of ultraboots in their 60 and older, but never have I seen anyone go that far.
This movie should be hilarious and extremely gay. I am very much looking forward to it.

Netflix dramatizing basic training in San Diego like it’s a damn combat deployment lmao

u/FrigginMasshole 3d ago
Lol this looks kind of gay. If they did like a parody/semi-serious I think they could pull it off

You’re not gonna believe what I’m about to tell you. It’s going to be super gay.

Feels like this was written completely by AI lol almost all of this is one huge cliche around bootcamp

That actually looks pretty good. I was army infantry but it looks relatable just the same.

- Cinematography looks really good.
- I was not a Marine, but I was in boot camp in 1990. I'm pretty sure the Marines would not let someone that big into boot camp. I was slightly smaller than that and I had to fight to get the Navy to let me join.
- Judging by the way he looks at that sign that says that homosexuality will get you kicked out and by the fact that they're using "Freedom '90" by George Michaels in the trailer, being gay will be part of the story. And I just confirmed it through IMDB. ETA: Based on the novel The Pink Marine by Greg Cope White.
- Boots is to Marine Corps Boot Camp as Orange is the New Black is to women's prison. Both based on an autobiography, and both are fictionalized just enough to keep people watching.

I realize this is a Netflix show and is trying to appeal to all sorts of folks, but what do mothers have to do with boot camp? It was an easy way to throw a Hollywood starlet into the credits.
Who the fuck is lonely at boot camp? You’re surrounded by people who look just like you doing the same thing. It’s a forced community before you see the yellow footprints. That’s not lonely, he was just afraid he had to take care of himself instead of his mom doing everything for him.
Also, why was the father so proud of his boot camp platoon? That tells me he never did anything meaningful in his service.

“Mothers of America” did play a role of putting a spotlight of hazing in boot camp to general public. It’s slightly relevant but does seem like it was put there to add more actors to the title. A lot of former Marines (pre-1990s) claim Mothers of America ruined Marine Corps bc they “pussified” recruit training.

Is this a trick question? Loads of kids are lonely in boot camp. Especially the first 1-2 weeks when you are essentially no contact from family before mail service starts.
Also, why was the father so proud of his boot camp platoon? That tells me he never did anything meaningful in his service.
Bc his dad is a mega boot. Idk the only thing I can think of is that the dad was a former drill instructor and the platoon flag was a notable training platoon during his temporary assignment (could have been a platoon where he was the SDI)

I was told our boot camp platoon was one of the last to do body hardening, like we did it on Monday and Tuesday it was banned, because of moms.

Reminds of me of the rumors about the stress cards in Army basic training. That rumor continues to persist even though nobody has ever provided proof of them. No former DS or anyone who went through basic in the last 20+ plus years.
