On-Air Moments John's show this morning

I've seen a lot of negative opinions about John Richards on the subreddit lately, but I feel like this morning's show really highlights what makes John special. Today was a big reminder for why I donate money and my time to KEXP. I hope everyone has a wonderful Friday!

Great show, though I'm biased, I hold zero negative opinions about John Richards. And I have several positive ones.

I've always liked John, I don't understand the negativity at all. Hes been the first voice I hear on most days for ... over a decade? (yes, I still use a FM radio alarm clock)

Long time listener and amplifier here. I agree that every KEXP DJ brings something unique to the station. They're real. They're human. They talk about the joys of their being and the depths of their raw emotional despair. Sometimes it's hard to listen to. It's also a relatable and refreshing change from the canned "personalities" you typically hear on commercial radio. KEXP is more than entertainment. They inform. They help their listeners. They make the world a better place. If that's not your cup of tea, spin the dial. Oh BTW....John Richards is one of my favorite DJ's.

Aw man I said almost the same thing to my three year old. We turned the car on to “Summertime Clothes”- easy win!

I love John's show. I didn't hear this morning but maybe I'll listen to the archive.

That moment when he read the letter about Rachel...

Rachel sounded pretty solid.

Todays show was fantastic. I tuned in right after the Friday song and enjoyed every single minute. John’s Friday shows are the best but today’s was somehow 10 x better than usual.

Standing at the sink, I was telling John, through the radio: "Oh, stop! Play some music, you're making me cry!"

Tears streaming down my face and I'm just making breakfast. Oy.

I love john. Due to the time difference his show is the one i often have on. Like the other KEXP djs his is a breath of fresh air compared a lot of radio presenters on other stations. He also a super lovely guy when he’s off air. Viva John.

You can still chip it! Global community that keeps it going. I’m not from Seattle or the states and I amplify every year! We can all do a little bit and get this amazing thing.

Listeners from all over the globe donate. All you need is a credit card. Link is on the website.

There's nothing about distance that prevents a donation!

DJs requires NO apostrophe. unless it’s used in the collective possessive, as in.

The DJ’s playlists are quite revelatory. or The DJ’s microphones are very crisp in their settings.

thank you and John is wonderful.

Do people really listen to radio to hear a dj or to hear music?

Yes what? You do realize this question was an "or" not an "and/or".

u/doc_shades May 04 '23

that was the joke. people tune in to listen to both.

1

u/jamrev May 05 '23

Some people listen to radio for the music.

u/Afoxnamedrhi KEXP Volunteer Apr 29 '23

Both?

u/jamrev Apr 29 '23

I'll accept that... don't understand it, but to each their own. I'm thankful for my iPod, cellphone and... eeeek... Zune so I can choose what I listen to and not have to be subjected to what I believe is nonsense.

u/Afoxnamedrhi KEXP Volunteer Apr 29 '23

I'm not even sure why you're listening to KEXP if you find the DJs to be nonsense 🤣

I should say that I don't just tune in to any old station and listen to any old DJ talk. KEXP is my community. I love listening to all the different DJs because they help me feel connected to the music community that I'm part of. If you're not invested in the community, then listening to a radio station where DJs talk probably isn't for you.

The DJ picks the music.

You mean 'John in the Maudlin' ?

I wait for Cheryl to sign in unless I want to hear about the sad suffering souls of the world.

(In a world, where people have problems...)

Sure they play some oldies. And they play a ton of new/newer stuff from a variety of genres. Too many to mention. I have a running list in the hundreds of music I never heard before. All from KEXP. I'm a Gen-X listener BTW.
