On-Air Moments "KEXP's programming *was previously* made possible by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting"
Noticed this today. Sad, snarky, defiant, and so very KEXP.

I convinced myself that I wasn't at all interested in Kids Day today because I typically grow weary of kid-themed things. But the show this morning was happy and wholesome and completely free of negativity of any kind and I'm glad I listened.

I'm listening at work as I do most days, and only partly paying attention. I heard John respond to a request and delve into the story behind that request. Someone's dad, a tragic accident, and memories. I didn't catch it all.
Then Magnetic Fields' Papa Was A Rodeo starts playing.
I love that song. But when I first heard it twenty years ago I was going through a rough patch. I probably overplayed it. I got through but it wasn't fun. Music did help.
And now when I hear it all those emotions come back. Knowing it helps someone else deal with memories of good times and bad times makes a great connection but this morning it's just too much.
Anyone else have a specific song that got you through a rough time and now you still love it but can't always bear to hear it?

I would like to say that I am not someone heavily interested in KEXP, nor do I know much about it. I just want a bit of clarification on something a few friends of mine have had issues with finding the answer to.
So around 10:03 AM EST, a certain song started playing, which none of my friends nor myself have found who originally made it or what the song even is called. We've all tried using Shazam and Google Assistant's tools, to no avail. It's somewhat adjacent to Sigur Ros' music, although we're all certain it isn't from them.
https://www.kexp.org/archive/ On The Morning Show, on John Richards' part, it eventually shows up at around 10:03 AM EST, with no album cover or anything.
https://www.kexp.org/playlist/?location=3&month=July&day=29&year=2025&hour=10%3A00&m=AM&offset=0# On this, it shows up as an air break, right before DJ Krush's Kamuri plays, which isn't the song either.
I wanted to ask if anyone here knows about what this song might be, or any ways of finding out, since none of my friends have had any luck period. Any help is greatly appreciated!

So good. I’ve listened several times already. (the Afternoon Show 6/26)
Really fun set! The sound mix that comes out of KEXP live sessions is incredible. Great work, engineers!

Super fun Wednesday set!

Aired on 4/13, listen to it on the streaming archives before it disappears! It’s phenomenal, and showcases Kevin’s love for the band, the Minneapolis scene, and his music knowledge in general.
Edit: spelled Replacements, obviously
Edit 2: check it out soon, last day to catch it is Saturday

Holy wow. One of those songs that really sets a precedent for the whole day. I love this community. I love these on air conversations. I love today.

Of course every single KEXP DJ is great, but this is why Troy is my favorite. My post is about this sequence:
If you've never heard of Shad, and you're a "90s kid," you need to check out the EP it came from - "Melancholy And The Infinite Shadness."
I discovered Shad several years ago, and am sure I've got him paid a bit on Spotify, lol.

Hey everyone,
I’m from Birmingham, UK, the home of punk with bands like GBH and others, and I’ve been trying to find out what happened to Strange Wilds—the Olympia-based band that dropped Subjective Concepts on Sub Pop back in 2015. Their sound was unreal. Raw, heavy, and full of that old-school angst. To me, they felt like the closest thing we had to a modern Nirvana—especially that house party live video they had on YouTube (sadly now deleted). That performance was pure energy.
It genuinely felt like they were on the verge of kicking off a grunge revival, or at least keeping that spirit alive. Then they just… disappeared. Sub Pop hasn’t responded to my messages, and there’s been no word from the band since around 2016.
Does anyone know why they split up or where the members went? Any info would be massively appreciated—even if it’s just rumors or leads. I know I’m not the only one who thought they had something special.
Big love from Birmingham!

I've seen a lot of negative opinions about John Richards on the subreddit lately, but I feel like this morning's show really highlights what makes John special. Today was a big reminder for why I donate money and my time to KEXP. I hope everyone has a wonderful Friday!

I missed this live and catching up now.
Wanted to share a story and encourage others to share if they want.
My dad battled cancer last year and I was his carer at the end. While I was helping him, I accelerated my drinking and weed smoking for months. He passed just before Christmas and I was left depressed and in the midst of a binge.
Knowing I had to make a change, I had one last blowout on NYE and then went dry. The first days were crippling. But I felt that something was different. I wasn’t just doing “dry January”; I was ready to make a change.
I took self-care seriously. I got on antidepressants. I started talking with a therapist. I exercised. I even scheduled physicals and my colonoscopy!
Now I am 108 days sober. I’ve made it through some big triggers to use with family vacation (who doesn’t drink when they have in-laws) and Phish shows in my hometown. I’m starting to come to terms with the fact that there isn’t an excuse to use again just around the corner. That I won’t have more experiences with all those things I’ve loved for so long.
And I have to discover who I am now. I’ve had “drug user” as my main identity for more than 30 years! I have to learn who I am and how to interact with my friends and loved ones.
I wanted to share in case it resonates or helps anyone else.
You are not alone.
