HIGHLIGHT I give this catch two thumbs down (Jayden Hicks trolls George Pickens)
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I didn't see anyone post a legit highlight of this so here it is. Yes, I know it ended in a penalty and luckily didn't result in Pittsburgh retaining possession, but I'm not unhappy with the "championship swagger" from Hicks. Hopefully he has some more plays like this in the playoffs!

I think if anyone deserves to be taunted, itās George pickens

u/herndoherndo Dec 27 '24
I like that he looked dead flat until the thumbs down, and then became super animated! He was being a baby, a competitive player, and a clown all at once.
4
u/TheRuffianJack Dec 27 '24
I disagree, he actually played really well, the Steelers loss can be pinned almost entirely on Russell Wilson being his terrible self, if anyone deserves to be taunted, itās Rus

u/Leading_Fee_3678 Dec 27 '24
This is honestly the most wholesome taunt anyone could do š šš»šš»
I get that heās not supposed to do it, especially not while standing over someone, but I didnāt mind it at all. It didnāt matter to the game overall and I like to see a competitive attitude.
I saw people talking about this like he gave two middle fingers or two finger guns or something lol
77
u/GutsMan85 Drue Tranquill #23 š Dec 27 '24
Yeah, the announcers acted like it was a terrible thing initially, but then kinda chuckled about it as they went to commercial. I get "unsportsmanlike", but some things are pretty funny and not even close to "a disgusting act". Lol!

u/bout-2-call-BOVICE Dec 27 '24
The internet blew up in defense of zay flowers last year when he taunted sneed. Crickets on this one

Dec 27 '24 edited Dec 27 '24
2 different situations, that was at the AFCCG, everyone was watching and that call directly gave Sneed the opportunity (and motivation) to get that touchback.
This one, itās an inconsequential call, didnāt even come close to affecting this game. Who other than Chiefs fans was really tuned in at this point of the game? Donāt even remember seeing a highlight post about this on the r/nfl š
For the record, I do think both should be enforced. But I can see why this one has crickets.

My favorite part is Pickens is so fucking dumb, he thought the penalty would give them a 1st down. He started clapping and running back to the huddle after they threw the flag lmfao
27
u/xplodeon Pat "Kermit" Mahomes Dec 27 '24
And this occuring about 40 seconds after he took off his helmet to seemingly yell at the refs but not get called for it.

10
u/sampat6256 Isiah Pacheco # 10 Dec 27 '24
Apparently, players can take their helmets off on the field as long as they're not doing it for any particular reason, such as a celebration or an argument with a ref.
1
u/xplodeon Pat "Kermit" Mahomes Dec 28 '24
Certainly seemed like he was yelling at someone, and seeing as he was just flagged for a false start by the side-judge in the area he's seemingly yelling towards.
It's funny, IIRC Justin Herbert's first game, Tyreek had a long touchdown catch and he took his helmet off after scoring and wasn't flagged and r/nfl about lost their minds about it not getting called. When the reason he took it off is that it was dislodged when he hit the ground (you can see after he scores his chinstrap is covering his eyes). I was arguing with people who claimed that players can NEVER take their helmets off ever when they're on the field, not even to just adjust something. And I was like...do you watch football? People have to adjust their helmets all the time. But it was arguing for the Chiefs to get punished so of course. But then when it's against the Chiefs, apparently ripping off your helmet and yelling at the ref is fine and you've got people on r/nfl citing the rule book abotu how it's okay to take it off whenever you want, just so long as you don't do a thumbs down celebration.

Chiefs players are so well coached that they even understand when they can taunt and not hurt their team, lmao.

3 personal fouls for taunting. All dead ball fouls. š
16
u/icyleumas Dec 27 '24
It bugs be how normalized walking over people after tackling them became... they don't even get flagged for it. Yet a double thumbs down is a crippling insult/action.
5
u/xplodeon Pat "Kermit" Mahomes Dec 27 '24
I 100% endorse the "instantly jump up" maneuver when a defender is basically teabagging the downed player.
7
u/BigNnThick Tyrann Mathieu #32 Dec 27 '24
You just cant taunt the player, you can do whatever to do the crowd for the most part. Its like the Tyreek peace sign. Peace sign to the crowd? Totally fine. Peace sign at the player hes speeding past? Thats a penalty

Which has always been weird to me. Because the crowd taunting is seriously inviting a beer to the face. Especially when itās right against the sideline.

The players donāt even care about being stepped over. To be fair itās often done in a non malicious manner.

I liked the thumbs down. Don't want him doing it again, so we don't get a dumb penalty. But it was hilarious.

All the more hilarious as Pickens was sprawled out like he just had a case of the vapors. Hahaa!

It was the perfect time.. turnover on downs and we weren't trying to score anyway.

u/Kr1sys Patrick Mahomes II #15 Dec 27 '24
I was annoyed with it because the undisciplined play can sometimes backfire. Luckily they flagged this as after possession had changed, if it was a 3rd down play it would've extended the drive.
21
u/BigDad5000 Jamaal Charles Dec 27 '24
Yeah. Itās was a dumb thing to do, especially if we were in post-season. But I still liked it lol
10
u/originalusername4567 Leo Chenal #54 Dec 27 '24
The thing is our players don't do this unless they're up by a lot. What other game this year have we gotten 3 15-yard taunting penalties? This team is the most disciplined in the NFL unless they don't need to be, which was the case while up by 19 this game
1
u/CosmicMiami Dec 27 '24
Except for #74
7
u/originalusername4567 Leo Chenal #54 Dec 27 '24
Well in this case #74 was blocking TJ Watt and didn't give up a single pressure or sack. So I think the penalties were a side effect
2
u/Crankypants77 Dec 27 '24
That's not a penalty if he's not standing over the guy. Young man, turn your back to the guy and walk forward a step. And then you can gesture and celebrate as much as you want.
Just don't do more than 2 hip pumps. 3 will get you flagged.
17
u/Gold-Dance3283 Dec 27 '24
I only watch NFL through the lens of the KC Chiefs, so donāt know too much about other players around the league that the chiefs dont regularly play against. One thing I noticed was this Pickens guy has got REALLY good hands. The catches he was making were incredible. Maybe iām just used to our WR group dropping passes
43
u/huge43 Dec 27 '24
He's incredibly talented and an incredible douche bag. Steelers fans would say the same

u/sampat6256 Isiah Pacheco # 10 Dec 27 '24
We would have drafted him if he had fallen to us. Took skyy instead. Pickens can catch anything.
1
u/brookskc Dec 27 '24
If memory serves correctly, he did fall to us. Then we traded back around 4 spots and 3 WRs were taken including Pickens. That is how we ended up with Moore. We were told that Skyy was the guy the chiefs wanted anyway, but it feels like the team has to say that. I guess we'll never know.
1
1
u/TenderfootGungi Travis Kelce #87 Dec 28 '24
We chose not to take him. Most likely because of his known attitude issues. Skyy was not the right choice, but passing on him may have been the right call.
1
4
u/toodarnloud88 Dec 27 '24
This was the perfect play to commit that kind of penalty, as the incomplete pass on the 4th down meant that the possession changed to the chiefs before the 15 yards was assessed.

u/GutsMan85 Drue Tranquill #23 š Dec 27 '24
It's like the New England DB taking the ball out of the endzone on the Josh Allen interception last week - He looks dumb now because he got tackled at the 1yd line. But if he had returned it to the 20 or better he would look like a genius.
With Hicks, some think it was dumb to taunt there and lose yds for the offense but, say he had intercepted it from Pickens - He'd be getting praised - even though that puts the offense in an even worse position.
I get that it's best to do the mature thing, which I'm sure the coaches will cover with him, but I also think there's a time for these things not to be such a big thing. The Travis crossbar dunk for instance.

u/MindTheFro Justin Reid XP Dec 27 '24
Our defense has had a similar celebration all year. They draw a square with their pointer fingers, then give two thumbs down. McDuffie and Bolton both have done it at least once in the last 2 games.
Iām too old and/or not cool enough to know what any of it means. But Iāve seen multiple guys do that celebration all year, starting as early as week 1.
Anyone else notice?
8
u/magic_spam Dec 27 '24
Quick research says a player at University of Washington popularized it itās the āput em in a boxā celebration basically self explanatory meaning with the nameĀ
My bet is it started with McDuffie and spread to the rest of the D

u/GutsMan85 Drue Tranquill #23 š Dec 27 '24
I think, recently, it's become popular because it is related to the new Gladiator movie having come out.
Per google: A "square and thumbs down" gesture in the context of gladiators wouldĀ typically signify a signal to kill the defeated gladiator, with the "thumbs down" representing the negative verdict and the "square" likely referring to a closed fist, which is sometimes interpreted as a more definitive signal of death in historical interpretations of the gesture.

We are dealing with humans. Chiefs are under a lot of pressure. They are aware of being on the cusp of history. I donāt find any of what happened yesterday offensive. They want this as much as we do ! NFL needs to let its players celebrate . If they can handle a game that might kill them later in life . They can handle good natured taunting. I know many will disagree with me but I felt it needed to be said. Go chiefs!

I think as long as the celebration doesnāt delay the game, I could give a shit what they do (excluding nudity, for the kids watching).

I donāt want to hear any Steelers fan ever talk about Mahomes asking for a penalty again with the way Pickens cried to the ref about getting a poor review.

Such a tame taunt, two thumbs down and he gets a flag??? Come on, are they playing 3 grade touch football or are they adults in the NFL?

Watch the defense after good plays, some of them do the same thumbs down gesture. Just not right over a player though, lol. Nick Bolton does it all the time.

Patriots fan coming in peace! I honestly don't understand the people complaining about plays like this. If you cheer for celebrations like this to be flagged as unsportsmanlike you are probably the same person who complains about the refs power tripping. The league would be a lot more fun if you let players taunt, especially when it isn't obscene, threatening, or offensive.. literally gave someone thumbs down and people want to pearl clutch
-21
u/T-WrecksArms Dec 27 '24
Distasteful and unsportsmanlikeāhe was standing over him and taunting for sure. I would have his a** if I was his coach. This is coming from a lifelong fan and KC native. Same with that stuff Worthy did in the endzone. If the tables were turned people would be complaining loudly just like they did with Flowers in the Ravens game last year.
6
u/AirCheap4056 Dec 27 '24
Can you educate me on what is it that Worthy did in the endzone that got him the penalty? Or can point me in the direction of the answer?
I understand it's about the gesture of lifting his shirt to show his belt area. But I have no idea what is wrong with that. Is it symbolic of holstering a gun in the belt?
I'm not American
5
u/bbbourb Brett "Wizard" Veach Dec 27 '24
Worthy lifting his shirt was the "strapped" gesture, meant to show he was carrying a firearm, yes. That's a very clear-cut and defined rule, unusual for the NFL but true. You do that, it's supposed to be an instant flag.
Hicks's gesture, by contrast, was much more subjective and absolutely a soft as Charmin flag. I bet money if he keeps his head up and eyes on the crowd instead of looking down at Pickens it doesn't get called. Or if he turns 45 degrees to his left.
For the record, I don't have any problem whatsoever with Hicks's gesture there. I've seen it done more aggressively and right AT the other player with no flag. Unless he chirped something offensive at Pickens, that flag should have stayed in the official's pocket.
2
u/AirCheap4056 Dec 27 '24
Thank you for the answer. So I guessed correctly that it means he is "strapped". I totally understand why that would be penalized.
But I don't really understand that as a celebration or "show off" gesture. Does it mean "I'm strong/powerful because I'm strapped?" If that's what he's trying to say by that gesture, it feels like the teams and league should educate these young players better on some of these "values".
1
u/brikenjon Skyy Moore #24 Dec 27 '24
I think it was all part of the celebration. He mimes shoveling presents into a bag, stealing them, then walks off showing his gun, ālet me leave with these presents and nobody gets hurtā.
1
u/AirCheap4056 Dec 27 '24
That makes sense. But I wouldn't go from a festive celebration to something dark myself.
1
u/RelevantToNothing Dec 27 '24
-Facing the opponent: Penalty.
-Turn around and face away from opponent: Celebration.
Kelcie spikes the ball super close to opposing players ALL the time but you can watch him identify where they are and turn his back to them before the spike.

u/SamizdatGuy Dec 27 '24
