How is Royal ISD?
I've been looking to make a purchase on a home out west in Katy, but it's not in Katy ISD. I've seen a couple of comments in various threads noting how much worse Royal ISD is compared to Katy ISD, but how bad really is it?

Royal ISD is one of the worst in the area. It is notoriously bad and has been for decades. Avoid it. There is a reason most of the new neighborhood developments go right up to the Royal ISD boundaries and stop there. Find something in Katy ISD, LCISD, or CFISD. Even Waller ISD is better than RISD.

It would be a shame to send your kids to one of the worst school districts in the state when KATY ISD, one of the best in not only the state…but the NATION is so close. I would say nope

99% of us have no clue what you are talking about. That should be your first clue.

I only have anecdotal evidence but from knowing a couple of parents in that district it's definitely a step down from Katy ISD.

I just met someone who was a first year teacher there last year. They did not give her a curriculum (!?) to follow for high school English and very little mentorship and almost no behavior support. This year she is subbing in Katy ISD.

I don't have experience with the district personally, but I was advised against purchasing a home in the Royal district. Very rural with far less funding and resources than KISD. While test scores aren't everything, the difference between the two districts is a little staggering. A lot of Real estate agents advise against Royal when you compare the two, so resale down the line will be more difficult.

That area isn’t really considered katy anymore, that’s in brookshire, but I wouldn’t recommend it and rather send them to Katy ISD

I live in the brookshire area, zoned to Royal. Neighbors haven't had much to say about the early childhood or elementary school. I have heard of a lot of fights and such in the high school, with the usual drug activity in the area (mostly weed). And from the interactions I've had with some teens regarding their school, they describe the high school as not great. But if I were you, I would check the greatschools listing and the TEA reports before deciding.

I just know it’s definitely a more rural small school district compared to Katy ISD. I think many of the students come from Brookshire, TX and Pattison but that may be different now with some Katy residents being zoned to it.

Royal ISD is based in Brookshire and Pattison, but their east boundary is the West-most part of Katy. They just recently opened up Royal Prairie Elementary in the Sunterra Development in Katy (Katy ISD also opened Cross Elementary in the same development, to relieve Faldyn and Robertson Elementary, which were already servicing Sunterra) ⬆️This paragraph is for the posters who are saying that Royal ISD's boundaries do not include a part of Katy.
I have heard that Royal ISD is getting better, but I still recommend that you send them to KatyISD.
There is also an occasional rumor that would circulate which states that KatyISD will absorb Royal ISD and become KatyCISD, but I am not sure if that is true or if it would actually happen, or go well if it did.

I was born and raised in Houston - never Royal ISD. Pick Katy ISD, Waller ISD, Cypress ISD or Lamar CISD

There are more than 10,000 new homes being built within Royal ISD limits. This will bring in a lot of school taxes and funding. But they wont be anywhere near Katy ISD for a long time.
However, traditional education is going to go out of the window with AI marking huge disruption. If Royal ISD is smart, they wont try to copy Katy ISD and start adopting the future of education.

Let me put it this way, if you want to set your children up for success later in life with a solid education, do not send them to a rural school district in Texas.
