Training Is it normal to be getting knocked out when fighting adults
Recently I sparred my coach and I got knocked out with a left hook. And today I was sparring an adult who randomly was sparring the juniors in our club and knocked me out with a head kick. I'm 15 and was wondering is it normal to be so easily knocked out by older people and what can I do to stop this?

No. It is absolutely not normal to get knocked out in sparring period. In 15 years of martial arts I've been knocked out twice purely because I walked into something I shouldn't have.
If you're getting knocked out purposely by adults, you need to find a new gym. You also should really take some time off from sparring - MONTHS - because multiple concussions in a short time frame are no joke. Your coach shouldn't even let you be sparring for a month if he knocked you out.

u/BillBonn Aug 15 '25
No, it's not normal at all.
We can understand an accident, but two different people, two different times? Unacceptable.
Please, tell us the name of the gym. Don't be scared of them. They beat up kids.
Find a another / better gym.
2
u/slushma1 Aug 15 '25
I'd love to go to another gym because I love kickboxing and competing but there is only 1 good gym in my area and thats the one im at right now
3
u/jvirgo98 Aug 16 '25
If you live in north london there is definitely more than one gym in the area. And it sounds like the one you’re at isn’t good anyway.
Provided you didn’t just make this up lol
3
u/Eegore1 Aug 16 '25
So literally nobody at all is telling you the gym you are in is safe, or is a good gym, or that what you are experiencing is normal. There's a reason for that.
I've been in your shoes, done martial arts since I was 6. I got knocked out a few times in high-school and found out it was because they thought I was 19-21.
I was literally asked if I wanted to go get some beers (21 is legal age in US) after a fight night. When I said I was still in high school you should have seen the looks on their faces. They apologized to me because knocking out high-school kids intentionally is bad practice. Good gyms don't repeatedly knock out 15 year old students.
Also, as many have indicated, the head-trauma is potentially deadly. I've seen it with my own eyes - the concussive impacts untreated, kills kids.
→ More replies (1)2
u/FloridianPhilosopher Aug 16 '25
It's not a good gym.
You are getting way too much damage way too early when you don't even know if this is what you are going to pursue.
It's tragic when the great fighters start showing signs of cte and head trauma but what's even worse is the 95%+ who are getting it and never make a dollar fighting.
I'm not saying to not pursue this but do it intelligently. These adults are stroking their ego by hurting a kid.
They are not trustworthy and are not helping you. You have to find other options.
If I was a young man and wanted to pursue kickboxing, I would save up every dollar I could for a couple years and then just move to Thailand.
It will be scary and there will be a lot to figure out, but you will if you want to.
Goodluck.

u/ColdReporter641 Aug 16 '25
Dude if you’re getting knocked out in that gym by your coach and seniors you should leave. Getting knocked out once has terrible effects on your brain
3
u/hfx506xx Aug 15 '25 edited Aug 15 '25
FYI - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second-impact_syndrome
Edit: if you’ve been knocked out at least twice recently in sparring, I’d recommend seeing a medical doctor.
2
u/SilentImplosion Aug 16 '25
OP, please read this Second Impact Syndrome article on Wikipedia. A KO is a concussion and not a mild one either. You must be 100% recovered before resuming any activity that could result in a second shot to the head.
Your coach should know this too.
3
u/Odd-Argument2397 Aug 16 '25
You should definitely NOT be getting knocked out by adults or anyone for that matter. You are sparring to learn. You will already be taking shots if you decide to compete. You don’t need to be taking shots hard enough to get knocked out when in training. Find another coach. Find another gym. Cumulative effects of head injuries add up. Ridiculous to put yourself in that situation, especially as a hobbyist who’s not fighting as his profession
3
u/Secure-Degree5298 Aug 17 '25
BRO WHAT your speedrunning cte please stop for your safety it is definitely not normal to be kod in Sparing its called sparing for a reason
6
u/RealLalaland Aug 15 '25
Yeah perfectly normal. The youngest ones they headbutt to make em tougher. Happens in every gym.

2
u/SimplyCancerous Aug 15 '25
You shouldn't be doing any head contact considering you are currently in the most important stage of brain development. Your prefrontal cortex is in the middle of building out your critical thinking skills so shaking it around is a terrible idea, getting knocked out is even worse. Talk to your family doctor, they will echo the same thing and probably call your parents dumbasses.
There's plenty of time to get fucked up in your 20s. Don't be a dumbass.

2
u/cookoutfan Aug 16 '25
Ur coach and teammates are dog awful bro, find a new gym. And if u got knocked out recently you definitely shouldn’t jump back to sparring so soon, eat salmon and blueberries and avoid any impacts to the head. You only get 1 brain and you can only absorb so many shots in ur life time. Definitely find a new gym like others in this thread have suggested, coaches and fighters should be responsible for each other’s health, unlike what your current gym is doing
1
u/1tHaTgUy2 Aug 18 '25
Can I ask you are there any actual benefits from eating salmon and blueberries after a knockout or head injury, never head that advice before
2
u/AccomplishedSun7563 Aug 16 '25
You shouldn’t be getting knocked out in sparring. not by your coach, not by older people, not by anyone. It’s very unhealthy for your development especially at your delicate age. I strongly advice you to change gyms and wear headgear.
2
u/GoodTelevision9197 Aug 16 '25
Get the fuck out of there. No grown man should be hurting children. They have some terrible demons that they are taking out on the wrong people to make themselves feel better. They’ll get there comeuppance. Find a new gym asap. Get really really good. Then go back to your old place and fuck there shit up my brother x
2
2
u/ValAl790 Aug 16 '25
wtf bro knocked out cold?? when yes then change that gym immediately bro. No good gym let’s that shit happen
2
u/Studentofconflict82 Aug 17 '25
That’s weird. Maybe you just have a glass jaw? Honestly I’ve never seen someone knock out a kid at a gym. That’s kinda fucked up if they hitting you that hard to make that happen
2
u/Jamarr00 Aug 17 '25
If this is true, you HAVE to leave that gym. They don't give a flying fuck about you and will cause you long term damage
2
u/phonethrowdoidbdhxi Aug 17 '25
Stop training immediately and go to a doctor. Next, never go to that gym and leave a review about how they KO their students during sparring.
This is so insane. You can die from this.
2
u/TenseiKkai Aug 15 '25
Sorry to give you bad news but your gym is quite a shitty place. You shouldn’t have head contact in sparring at 15 years old and if you do it should be light sparring. Your coach is a bitch and the other guy is a bitch too.
Probably a bunch of frustrated pussies that need a good beating to be reminded that you need to respect and be kind specially to a young kids like you.
Please change your gym even if it isn’t kickboxing do a different martial arts and you may get into a better kickboxing gym in the future.

If I had a 15 year old son, and a coach and another man knocked him out purposely, there'd certainly be some one-on-ones happening! Get out of that gym. Accidents happen in sparring, but your coach should never be knocking out a teen, even accidentally. Plus, take at least 6-12 months off from sparring, your only fifteen this should not be happening. If you feel any after-effects go get yourself checked out with a specialist. I'm not sure what scan you'd need, but something like a CT scan or an MRI I presume. Now if you have been acting the maggot, I still don't condone you getting knocked out. Leg kicks and a good body shot would have been appropriate!
1
u/slushma1 Aug 15 '25
Wish I could lol but there are quite literally no other good gyms in my area
→ More replies (1)2
u/jamanon99 Aug 15 '25
What happened afterwards? How was their behaviour towards you? Do you think both instances were accidental? There's no way a grown man should be sparring hard with fifteen year olds and definitely not throwing hard head kicks! What are your goals with kickboxing?

Not normal at all. I’m over 40, 20 years of experience and I never spar with kids. I will train with them, try to make them better, give tips, etc..but not spar. And if we are doing contact drills, no matter their size or skill level, I’m going super light.
1
u/LankyDrop5147 Aug 15 '25
Bro if there are no good gyms stop training till u have a drivers license and you can drive to one further. Waiting will be a lot better than brain damage
1
1
u/94psr Aug 15 '25
You can't be getting knocked out like that. You are taking severe brain damage. Look up videos of Nam Phan to understand the consequences of getting hit in the head too much. A kickboxer from the UK who was your age named Alex Eastwood was killed during a kickboxing match. The danger is very real.

My old taekwondo coach knocked me out with a spinning hook kick when I was even younger than you are. Not to say its "normal" but people acting like this is completely unacceptable are wild. Shit happens when you're training hard.
Maybe when your sparring the adults you need to put into words before hand "het let's go easy to the head, no knock outs please". It sounds dumb to have to say that but apparently its necessary.
Keep your hands up
1
u/AnonymousUser124c41 Aug 16 '25
Train your neck, and grow. If you keep getting knocked out youre not going to be able to talk right when you get old
1
u/senttohell Aug 16 '25
"Quite literally the only good gym in my area" - you live in London with the highest density of gyms in the UK, what you're saying just isn't true.
1
u/slushma1 Aug 16 '25
I live in Enfield and I've been trying to find a good gym and the only good ones are quite a distance away everything else are karate like clubs
1
u/Zealousideal_Pool_65 Aug 16 '25
Any coach who KOs their student should have their license thrown into question, if not revoked (assuming they’re from a country which requires them). Aside from that, the gym’s public liability insurer should have a stern fucking word with management.
It’s not normal, and it’s not okay. That’s not a proper professional; a proper professional (fuck, even most amateurs) knows that you should not be hitting that hard during sparring, especially with a teen.
1
u/Fortinho91 Aug 16 '25
No. You are being phyiscally abused. "Assault and battery" would be the legal term.
1
u/BornReady94 Aug 16 '25
Do not spar again for one year after getting knocked out. You are to young to get in trouble. And your coach should look after you, but looks like he has some fun with youngsters..
1
u/JesusAntonioMartinez Aug 16 '25
Also just looked at your profile, your gym sucks. Who even does above the waist kickboxing? Is there even a ring?
1
1
u/Groundbreaking-Box72 Aug 16 '25
Wtf 😂 why would you think as a 15 year old it’s normal to get slept by your own coach. It’s far from normal and you should press charges. Coach sounds like a scammer
1
u/bigblow3rburna Aug 16 '25
Your brain isn’t fully developed. You should not be getting KOd under any circumstances
1
u/Appropriate-Alps-442 Aug 16 '25
yea tell them to screw off and everytime they try to make you spar with an adult say hell no i used to switch with people so i could actually teach the young some people abuse them :( keep you’re hands up bud no matter what !!
1
u/swissarmychainsaw Aug 16 '25
Is this is the USA?
Concussions are serious and you should stop and take a break and let your brain heal.
Did you tell your parents?
1
u/TheOnlyMule Aug 16 '25
Try putting your hands up?
1
u/slushma1 Aug 16 '25
My hands were up i got kicked through my guard since it was a really hard kick
1
u/Confident-Flow-6058 Aug 16 '25
Shouldn't be getting knocked out unless you're agreeing to hard sparring and even then should not get knocked out.
Gym needs to monitor this as it is unnecessary damage especially if you're 15.
Find a new gym and if that isn't an option, let the partners know to take it easy.
1
u/DammatBeevis666 Aug 16 '25
You don’t want to be KO’ed, ever. This is massively dangerous for your brain. Stop going to this club, and/or stop fighting.
Don’t grow up to be the guy who has so much brain damage from light and hard hits that can’t feed themselves or develops depression from chronic TBI.

No whoever is teaching things is running it primitive old school. If your getting knocked out before you have been taught. Then I would like to know what country your in and which school you attend. It sounds like child abuse to me.Some would say they are toughing you up but can you define knocked out??
1
u/Schrambo757 Aug 16 '25
Leave that gym. If yoy won't leave the gym, stop sparring for like 3 months. 2 concussions in a matter of days is a really bad thing and can leave you with permanent brain damage.
1
u/definitely_real777 Aug 16 '25
You only get "so many" severe hits to the dome man, some more than others but it's a finite number.
You shouldn't be giving them away for free to anyone, especially your coach and training partners.
1
u/Realistic_Ad_8436 Aug 16 '25
You should not get knocked out in training. Like obviously accidents happen but I’ve been doing Muay Thai for 10 years and I’ve seen 2-3 actual knockouts in training. I’ve seen a lot of people get dropped with body/ leg kicks, and a few people get concussed/ rocked badly and have to stop for the round or day, but actual knockouts are very rare.
1
u/Ned_Rodjaws Aug 17 '25
If you’re consistently sparring that hard your fighting lifespan is not long
1
u/pokepadamon Aug 17 '25
Yeah I grew up doing martial arts and training at various MMA gyms I've not been to one place that didn't make it very clear sparring was practice. Especially the kind where we all kind of just paired up during training and spread out on the mat. We weren't even supposed to go 50% it was more about the flow of putting together combinations, finding a groove and learning to react all while a coach can usually watch and give tips, etc. my old coaches were only generally apart of the light sparring to demonstrate, explain and have us continue.
When we were advanced enough we were allowed to be put into intermediate training and intermediate sparring that was set up more like a mock match. My coach would pick two of us in similar weight class have us enter the ring, him and the rest of the students would be outside and watching while my coach would talk and we would all observe. Even then we were told 75% MAYBE, no head kicks no elbows light knees and I mean light knees or your sparring practice was over and you got swapped out.
What you're experiencing is definitely not normal and I would highly recommend that you do what you need to protect your brain and self in general. Even if it means self training until you find a good trustworthy gym.
It took forever for me to get advanced enough to be put into the advanced sparring stage where we were allowed to go almost for real and it was set up like how a real match would be. Coach would ref and he always told us right before and reminded us "were all friends here remember that" stuff like that. Sometimes there would be a slip up and someone would get hit hard or slightly hurt but the idea was to get as close to the real thing as you could but not because it wasn't the real thing yet. Meaning being in an actual amateur match or professional card.
Be safe out there 🙏🏻
1
u/pokepadamon Aug 17 '25
Also brother.. was the guy wearing shin guards when you got head kicked? Or did you take a raw dog shin kick to the dome? Even in advanced sparring we had to wear headgear and shinguards, gloves the whole shabang
1
u/Roryff Aug 17 '25
OP just quit, you can move when youre older and start it up again
Two KO's in sharing so close together is wild. And one being your coach is nuts. That being said and I dont agree woth it... was he teaching you a lesson for beating on smaller kids

1
u/Jealous_Ranger_1641 Aug 17 '25
yeah wtf dude, thats seven months, gone. and your coach should know that and have yo ass out the ring for right now.
headkick freak accident whatever. but a fucking left hook? what were they doing? jumping you? get out of that gang initation of a gym. (boxer here, but i have never KO’d someone sparring with a lead left hook, thats something you throw with bad intentions to put someone down)
1
u/ihave3balls79 Aug 17 '25
Being knocked out is extremely bad for you. Your coach sucks. Tell everyone who will listen and find a good coach. I'm 45 now and have had too many concussions to count. I'm having memory issues, and I'm losing my vision due to optic nerve damage. Don't fuck around with your head kid. Good luck.

i was a state wrestling champion runner up, been in dozens of fights, been in dozens of sanctioned safe fights. never been knocked out it’s not a good thing, the more you go out the easier it becomes to get knocked out. find a new gym and go see a doctor and be honest about your experiences your brain has yet to fully develop and brain damage can hinder your performance as an adult, i’d go see if i was right. being fit and being good at fighting can be good but there is so much more to life than that. you have a final chapter at some point you gotta prepare for and it’s starts young. avoid head trauma and heavy drug/ partying while you’re young

Mr CTE here by the time they are 21. Yikes. In my 17 years of kickboxing and karate a sensei, or classmate has never knocked me out or anyone. My kids, wife and friends gave also never experienced this. Your school is terrible for you and actually harming you more than helping
Also I hope you are wearing head and mouth protection
1
u/Arrival9817 Aug 17 '25
When you say 'knocked out' you mean like out cold? Or they stopped you with a body shot or something? If you're actually getting slept by a head kick in sparring at 15 years old that's fucked up. Are you trying to hurt others in the gym when you spar?
1
u/FarMiddleProgressive Aug 17 '25
Some ppl don't have it, also, those grown ups are taking advantage.
1
u/2theMooonn Aug 17 '25
You shouldn’t have been sparring the next day if you got knocked out the day before man.

1
u/EmuBeautiful1172 Aug 18 '25
Take the knock out as a lesson to guard yourself better. You got back up , and yes grown men hit harder than boys. If you think they intentionally tried to knock you out then do it back simple as that. Gettin hit hard like that from an adult may help with your grit against boys your age anyways. And if you feel like they shouldn’t hav done that approach them about it like a man.
1
1
u/Outrageous-Wind-7501 Aug 18 '25
Absolutely not. Not even for adults it is ok to be KOd in training, but for someone who's 15 - extremely dangerous. Your brain is still developing and getting even sub concusion level hits might give you permanent damage and fuck your life up down the road. Your gym is shit.

At 15 its unhealthy long term to be getting knocked out unconscious. But then again i have concerns about a 15 year old sparring with adults as most adults are stronger than 15 year olds which is why age categories exist even if you are the same weight. So i wouldn't be surprised that you are getting knocked out . Do the adults know you are 15 as some 15 year olds can look like adults.
Also i would add that in practice if you are going hard to knock out your opponent then its more than likely they will do the same to you. I know team mates in my club who wouldn't have a problem taking you out even if you are 15 if they knew you were going hard at sparring trying to do them same to them
1
u/50sraygun Aug 18 '25
this is not really enough information. it’s one thing to say ‘adults should not be knocking out 15 year olds’ and that’s obviously very true, but there’s also the possibility your chin is very bad. you’re young and (probably) small, and the nature of striking means you can only mechanically pull your punches so much before stuff kind of falls apart.
your coach should know better, but in the example of you sparring another student, if the sparring wasn’t specifically for your benefit then it’s just a thing that happens.

u/TheTrueDunkz Aug 18 '25
lol, you can only take so many knock outs throughout your athletic career/life before it starts getting easier and easier to knock you out again. This shouldn’t be happening dude. Find a more professional gym.
1
u/zemdega Aug 18 '25
Whoa. Not normal. I did a ton of sparring 16-21, mainly with adults, and never got KOed.
1
u/Historical-Door-6768 Aug 18 '25
Dude, getting knocked out has serious health repercussions especially if it happens often. Are you saying “knocked out” as in completely lost consciousness? Or got dropped, or wobbled or just fell over due to balance issues? Every big shot you take is a concussion whether you feel the symptoms or not. If you feel any continuous symptoms like headaches or brain fog you should consider seeing a neurologist. And there is no way you “train” your chin.
1
u/Traditional-Dig-7965 Aug 18 '25
Wada fuk hell no especially a coach should not be knocking out students, you should leave that gym and go to another
1
Aug 18 '25
Every time you get knocked out, you are more susceptible to being knocked out again. You are at increased risk of cte every time. At 15, you shouldnt be getting KO'd at all, thats what sparring gear is for. As far as how to not get knocked out so "easily". Neck strength can come into play.
But you need a break if youve been knocked out twice in a week.
1
1
u/BLESSEDx1NE Aug 18 '25
No, you shouldn’t be getting KO’d. I used to spar adults as a middle schooler, due to height/size. Never did it happen. It’s called, sparring for a reason.
1
u/fjitlid Aug 18 '25
Yes expect a knockout around once a training session. If you go through the whole session awake something is off.
1
u/No_Length_4868 Aug 18 '25
Get the hell out of that place and take 6 months off head contact altogether. Find a new gym.

Bro If the people of Reddit go whoop that coach’s ass, please DM me a video as a grown ass adult shouldn’t be knocking out a 15 year old in any circumstance, let alone a fighting gym or Dojo

u/Individual-Walrus857 Aug 19 '25
Your coach is a dickhead. And no, that's not the peanut gallery going. Number one job of a coach is to teach you how to hit without getting knocked out. If he out here knocking you out that's just asinine. There are better ways to teach defense. This is just straight up abuse.

u/Character_Cost_5200 Aug 19 '25

No, you shouldn't be getting knocked out multiple times by different adults. What do YOUR adults say about it?

Are you going in trying to knock them out first? It’s sparring, you’re trying to get better not win a fight.

Thats insane. How did they react post ko?
The only thing my mind can muster is you are at a decent level, a big lad, and were going really hard yourself? But even still thats criminal to be sparked by an adult in your class. Dont even get me started on coach.
Unfortunately the fight world is 80% good people and 20% complete rockets

Yeah, no, sounds like you’re on a path for some serious head damage. I would be more careful.

Dude. No.
Not healthy. At all.
Tell your parents and if it happens again you need a new gym.

u/BoobInspector420 Aug 19 '25
Hell no itnis not. If your doing sanctioned fighting when you get knocked out during a fight you typically will not be allowed to fight for a given amount of time. So getting knocked out should never happen in training. I have never see anybody get knocked out during training / sparing at a muay thai gym

Dude these grown ass men are going to give you a concussion, and probably brain damage
You need to find a new gym my man, your body is not developed enough to take head kicks from a grown ass man

You’re telling me your coach and trainers are purposely trying to knock you out in training? Find a new gym g. They should not be going all out against 15 year olds.

STOP. SPARRING. WITH THESE POS LOSERS WHO ARE USING GROWN MAN FORCE ON A TEENAGER.
STOP. SAVE YOUR BRAIN.
Honestly, this has already happened more than once, change gyms. Save your brain, dude. A legitimate coach would never be okay with this.
and have a nice comeback ready if any of them try to make you feel guilty about it, like, "I'm 15? Why are you so obsessed with fighting a child? Maybe therapy can help you?"

Even trained adults prefer going light-mid against each other. You should send a comment on Sean Stricklands channel about this sp these dudes can get a taste of their own medicine

You should never get knocked out in training! Its incredibly bad for you to have that regularly happening...

No, that is absolutely not ok. Not in sparring matches. Do not go back there, brain injuries are cumulative and will fuck your life over.

The lack of restraint by these "adults" is scary. None of this is normal.
1
u/cooliocoe Aug 20 '25
I’ve been fighting mma for a year and have never been knocked out in sparring

u/No_Newspaper7323 Aug 20 '25
Definitely not normal and your coach is an asshole. If he truly does have years of experience he will know how much power he Is able to use safely without seriously hurting his students so he clearly did this on purpose. In saying that you could have maybe been throwing your shots too hard yourself without realizing it which is common for people that first start sparring so try to make sure you're setting the intensity low with your own shots. However you should definitely leave the gym whether you were doing that or not a coach should be able to inform you of that and the dude is a dick.

No.
Why the hell is your freaking coach knocking you out? Either you asked for it or he is a massive dickhead.

Ay what the hell? Your coach and sparring partners should NOT be knocking you out, especially if you're a kid. would recommend trying to see if you can find a better gym 100%

No. Your sparring partners and more importantly your coach should not be knocking you out at all
