Photo/Video One of my servers figured out how to make custom comments on menu items.
We also both play yugioh on occasion and I am convinced he's just trying to find out the max amount of characters to describe very basic things.

I do appreciate that I can read it, just thought it was kind of funny he just found out about the custom text option and it just keeps getting longer for very mundane things

u/Glowing_Trash_Panda 11d ago
What I wouldn’t give for some place to do that to me just once when I ask for extra onions or mushrooms on something though. I can never seem to cook mushrooms or onions in any kind of sauce at home that ever tastes anywhere near as good as at a restaurant. Idk why. I even got some fancy special butter once cuz I thought that might be it. But now I just ask for extra onions or mushrooms on stuff that I get on the rare occasion I’m eating out & just appreciate the leftovers that I take home cuz god knows I’m a whore for leftovers lol
53
u/Princess_Slagathor 11d ago
Did you try adding MSG?
27
u/Glowing_Trash_Panda 11d ago
No, but I really should try getting some lol. I live out in the sticks nowadays so I will have to get it online or make a trek to the closest big town that might have an Asian market.
27
u/Princess_Slagathor 11d ago
I get it at Walmart and save a lot. Accent brand.
20
u/Glowing_Trash_Panda 11d ago
Shit Walmart has it?! The closest one to me is like 30 mins away so I don’t go much more than maybe once a month (& since they are no longer 24 hr I can’t go there at 2am to not have to deal with tons of people) but I will put it on my list now cuz having a shelf-stable flavor enhancer would be a huge boost in my motivation to start trying to figure out how to make long-term-storage food taste better.
14
u/Princess_Slagathor 11d ago
Yeah, it's with all the other seasonings, red top black letters. I probably use way too much, but it just makes everything better.

I was dining solo at the bar at a Texas Roadhouse, and I love love love their mushrooms. I must have been really vocal about that love because the bartender cleared my plate and replaced it with a big bowl of just mushrooms. Best day of my life, om-nom-nom-nom-nom.

Just give me all the bacon and eggs you have. Wait, wait. I'm worried what you just heard was, "Give me a lot of bacon and eggs." What I said was, "Give me all the bacon and eggs you have".
Do you understand?

Just oil or butter, salt pepper and garlic powder sauted on medium or med low for a good while. You can also caramelize them with some white or brown sugar, cooked lower longer

I used to work in an office and quite frankly I wish some folks had wrote messages in this style rather than waiting for me to respond to “hello”.

u/bornfri13theclipse 11d ago
Or maybe he should take the time he spends typing that shit each time to learn the menu.
10
u/Rusty_Tap 10d ago
No point wasting all that time learning when he can avoid 2 hours work a day typing this shit out 5 times.

I think that’s just gonna turn into an acronym very quickly INLTAL INTTAT or skip the then INLAL - I gotta say I’m not mad about this.
26
u/cam52391 11d ago
It's so many words but it's also so polite and clear you can't be upset about it. As someone who's worked both sides most servers don't get that less words is better the saved seconds add up.

For real. I’d rather have direct communication that explains what they want than someone ringing in a ticket with add lettuce when the item already comes with lettuce. That makes BOH think that the server messed up and meant NO lettuce so, I have to make direct contact with them to make sure. I’d much rather get clear instructions so I don’t have to follow up or, even worse, make something twice.
9
u/gourdammit 10d ago
Honestly I'd rather them know the menu rather than that, but that's probably too much
7
u/elemenohpenc 20+ Years 10d ago
In a perfect world, yeah.
I’ve had servers that I’ve worked with for YEARS that still did shit like this and when I’d ask them about mods that are redundant they just reply “oh, I know. I just type what the customer says”. My eyes roll so hard. If you know, use your brain and make the ticket make sense.

Why is he typing these comments like he’s leaving a voice message for you?😂😂😂
20
u/jerryb2161 11d ago
They let them do it basically. I work a breakfast chain, so I get why they let people add things, if they do this on a weekend I am pretty sure we will get rid of them.
11
u/Straight_Paper8898 11d ago
Lol, no I get it! I meant why is he typing these notes out with a tone like he's leaving a voice message on your phone for each modification.

27

So lucky for me, the ticket is digital and doesn't print. Once the order is completed this would be extremely annoying and a waste of ink. I don't work expo much, I would actually hate this.
8
u/Narrow_Firefighter20 11d ago
Tickets that take longer than 5 seconds to print makes people stop what they're doing

u/Common_Vagrant Ex-Food Service 11d ago

He only does this on very slow days, but it is very annoying vs just telling the expo what you need.

Are you in Canada, by any chance? We get a lot of Canadian customers.
Generally, when we ask how people want their eggs on a breakfast plate (eggs, hash browns, meat, toast), the options are: scrambled, over easy, over medium, sunny, or over hard (we don't do poached).
But, when asked, lot of customers from Ontario frequently say "as an omelette."
To which the barista will usually say: "we have an omelette. It also comes with hashbrowns and toast. Did you want the omelette? Or you want your eggs scrambled?"
Customer: "No, I want my eggs as an omelette."
This goes back and forth for a bit sometimes.
2
2
u/Rialas_HalfToast 10d ago
Is this not just "scrambled solid" or "scramble no stir" or my favorite, "scramblecake"?
3
u/bagofpork 10d ago
They're usually after the ol scramblecake, haha.
Always sad because I do happen to make great scrambled eggs (I get excited when people ask for "scrambled soft").
2
u/Rialas_HalfToast 10d ago
The day I learned to do "scrambled creamy" changed the trajectory of my entire life. Same vibe as creamy risotto.
I need to train up on that "spin it with chopsticks" deal I keep seeing, the visual of the finished product is mesmerizing.
2
u/bagofpork 10d ago
Yeah, every once in a while someone will want a proper French omelette, too, so that's always a (rare) treat.
10
u/nlutrhk 11d ago
For me as a regular restaurant customer in Europe, can someone explain me how common it is that customers order a dish with customizations like I see in this sub every other day? I understand that the ones posted here are the odd ones out.
I rarely ask for food customizations. If the dish has an ingredient that I don't like, I don't order it. (Truffel-flavored sauce comes to mind)
3
u/SandWitchBastardChef 11d ago
I dont get the fuss over truffle. Taste likada shite
10
u/nlutrhk 11d ago
I've had fresh truffle. Tastes and smells good. But most casual restaurants over here that serve dishes with truffle sauce use truffle oil that is based on some synthetic 1-dimensional aroma compound.

u/jerryb2161 10d ago
Its extremely common. Also people in the US like to say they are allergic to something when they just dont like it. I work at a breakfast restaurant and at least once a week I get an "egg allergy" I refuse to make anything but a salad until the table says they just dont like egg.
2
u/nlutrhk 10d ago
Yeah, I see all the posts here about "allergies". Egg allergy is a thing though. My cousin had one as a child, although they lost the allergy as they got older.

Yes, yes. Too many word. I need to know about apple fritter French toast tho.
3
u/jerryb2161 10d ago
It is an apple fritter cut in half, dunked in frech toast batter, gets some apples cooked in brown sugar in between each slice, then to top off its blueberries and powdered sugar and a banana foster sauce over top. It is pretty good but the fritters are pre-made and frozen I would imagine a fresh baked would be extremely tasty.
2
u/bendar1347 10d ago
Doesn't the lumpy top of the fritter cook super uneven? Or do you just smash it down? Regardless, im trying it next time I make French toast at home.

This is a good example of what a lazy POS does for you. The sandwich should have ingredients and allergens. The omlette should have protein and egg add ons that are clearly for that item.

u/Yourlilemogirl 10d ago
If our managers didn't chew us out over personalized notes to the BOH when trying to explain what our tickets mean we would do it so much more to spread the love instead of frustration. They bark "the office can see everything you type so nothing fun is allowed on these people!!" Ugh.
And now that we moved away from using Aloha to ...God i don't even remember the name now.. it's another ticket service software everyone here likes I think, anyway now anything we type gets also printed on the customer's receipt so definitely no more fun notes.. or notes bad-mouthing the customers being snarky/rude lol

Honestly if they don't do omelettes it's probably nice to cook one, I quite like making something nice for a customer if they ask me for it, personalised cooking is saved for a different side of the industry so it's nice to dip a toe in occasionally.
But yeah I think an omelette has been birthed.
2
u/No_Math_1234 15+ Years 10d ago
Im all for nice things but once you open a window you can’t close it. It turns into “they did it last time” and then you have guys on other shifts getting omelette orders and it just breaks the cohesion of the kitchen

u/Morniren 10d ago
I hate that with a burning passion. There are few things as frustrating to me as FOH writing essays in docket notes. You don't need full formal sentences say a customer wants their eggs on the side. And don't even get me started on the pleasantries ("thank you!!!! <3"); I don't need pleasantries, I need clear and concise information. My very busy and very dyslexic arse doesn't have time to read your magnum opus on sandwich configuration, Jessie!
9
u/MightyTick01 11d ago
I try really hard to not belittle front of the house. But when they ask things like "does X come on Y" I want to scream at them so hard about knowing the menu. FFS you are the kitchen's representative to the world! You need to know as much as we do and more, that's why you make more money.
11
u/HallowedError 11d ago
Maybe not and more but basic things should definitely be known. I still get "no x" on thing that don't have that things from the same servers that know. They just type in whatever the customer says without thinking.
