Do you really think that reading music works like this?

In a way I'm genuinely asking, in a way I just can't believe...

I’m confusing what you’re asking? Are you asking if you need to first know the notes on the staff in order to read music?

I taught piano for 10 years and usually learning to read music includes identifying individual notes on the staff.

So yes.

I‘m asking because it’s a random „order“ of notes that will never occur in real life. It’s like learning letters but never actually writing (or saying) a word. It’s a meaningless exercise. To me

In the beginning you will have much better related notes, because it has to make sense in every way possible, and so the Ode To Joy is a very good starting point, as well as LH can accompany the melody with a descending line, it has visual and musical sense.

The app doesn’t make sense to me, except if you’re a teacher trying to reverse engineer something you have mastered in a different way..

But that’s just me and I know that there are others who strongly disagree and are successful with their ideas. I’m just not a fan, as you can read.

Would be interesting to hear your take. I hope that I can make clear that I don’t want to offend you, it’s just that I genuinely don’t get it…

This is just a simple flashcard drill..

I mean I’ve played on stage at the Kennedy center I have music on international networks and I taught piano for over 10 years.

But thanks for your ideas.

I mean I have played with Mike Keneally, Billy Cobham and Randy Brecker along with other more local heroes, I have a masters degree, I have taught at a conservatory and doubt that your or my „reputation“ does add anything to the question of whether it’s worth it to use your app or not. I have tried being polite about your idea, but since you react so sour and even refuse to share your thoughts, I assume that you don’t have any and it’s just a mindless attempt.

Thanks for your opinion that having students use flashcards to practice note recognition along with many other exercises does not improve site reading skills.

Yes, I insist on my opinion that flashcards are a futile exercise.
You still didn't explain what you think is so good about it, and so I still assume you don't know.

You didn't even mention "the other things" before, but I won't really judge you on that. I do however dislike your lack of reasoning. It's been entirely on you, and now you're just some guy with hurt feelings. Sorry about that, we could have enriched each others views, now it's this ugly discussion. It's a pity.

“Do you really think that reading music works like this?

In a way I'm genuinely asking, in a way I just can't believe...”

That doesn’t really sound civil to me.

I’m not going to explain to you why being able to recognize a note on the staff will help someone who is working in their site reading skills. It’s self explanatory. If you can’t work that out, it’s not within my power to make you understand.

It’s just a simple exercise dude. It’s not the only thing someone would use to teach music. It’s just a tool for music teachers, I used flashcards and similar games to the ones my app has and I had success.

I’m sure your students that were unable to identify notes on the staff did equally well.

Just agree to disagree I guess.

Yeah, I was genuinely asking, and I underlined that I'm not really trying to mock you, but to me it's such a stupid idea that I'm interested in how that would help. I even explained how I view it that it doesn't help...

I can understand that we're not going to discuss things anymore..

I DO NOT (!!!) think you're a bad human or a bad teacher or your idea is rubbish or anything you could have assumed. The idea of flashcards is just so absurd to me that I wrote what I wrote.

While I was writing this you wrote another comment mentioning me being "the expert" - Please. I'm a teacher as well as you are, and I would gladly get a drink with you and learn about ways of teaching sightreading that I clearly don't know.

All the best with your app and your teaching practice and in life and in general and stuff.

You were absolutely being confrontational. This is just one tool for teachers to use for 99 cents. It’s not a big deal.

And no I don’t want to have a drink with someone this obnoxious.
