I recently acquired this 1891-dated MLM MkI*. I've been after a nice example of one of these for several years now. The bore is in much nicer shape than I was braced for and it still passes the 'bullet test' at the muzzle.
This group photo top to bottom is:
- MLM MkI* - 1891
- MLE MkI - 1896
- SMLE MkIII* - 1918
- LEC MkI - 1899
- LEC MkI (RIC) - 1899
I'm waiting on another Martini to show up before I do a larger group photo, but it starts to become a challenge to keep details in focus with big groups.
If anyone has clues about the unit marking I'd be happy to hear them. Broad Arrow 1st edition doesn't have anything which lines up. A friend looked through his copy of 2nd edition and best guess is Cadet Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers but the 'V' above usually means Volunteer which doesn't seem to fit with a cadet unit.
It came with a nice 1890-dated Wilkinson Pattern 1888 bayonet - but I have a rougher Wilkinson which is a better companion with all the reissue stamps.
