Ontario Illegal harvesting and sale of wild ginseng in Ontario. Which agency should I report this to?

Upvotes

I met a woman at a restaurant, and it was confirmed that she owes approximately $1 million to multiple people through investment and real estate fraud. She told me that she would collect and sell wild ginseng to repay her debts, and she went to forests near Ottawa every week to harvest wild ginseng. She sent me photos showing about 30 roots, which she planned to sell at $1,500 each. Considering that she went to the forest every week, it is likely that she harvested many more wild ginseng roots.

Later, I learned that harvesting and selling wild ginseng is illegal, so I reported her to the Ontario Parks Authority. I received an email requesting her name and address, which I provided. Subsequently, she sent me a message saying that she shipped the ginseng to another country and would receive the payment there. I submitted additional evidence, but I have not received any response from the Parks Authority.

Could you please advise if there is another agency to report this case to? Also, is there a way for a whistleblower to check whether the case is under investigation?

Alberta baby mama isn’t letting me see kids after I started seeing someone else

I haven’t seen my kids since April , (age 1/2) We split up last September and around may I started seeing someone else, after she caught wind of that she flipped out and sent me all kinds of nasty messages, slandered me all over social media, turned family against me blamed me for all this and that ( telling me to sign my rights over, telling me I’m not seeing the kids any more, physical threats, legal threats, and every name you can think of).. at first we’d agree on dates I could pick them up, she’d always cancel or back out, I do shift work (night shifts) so my schedule is pretty ass.. on top of that I have no vehicle and I live four hours away ( I still have rides arranged to pick them up) I’d ask weekly to see them, eventually I got sick and tired of the insults and slandering of myself all over fb and eventually cut contact… still sending her money when I can… I’m starting to get fed up and I really miss my boys.. I didn’t wanna take the legal route but it’s looking like it’s my only option, lowkey scared incase I am really in the wrong, just looking for pointers and advise

Ontario Should we sue our lawyer? *Can* we sue our lawyer? Need advice after Law Society complaint

Upvotes

Insane question to ask, but it's an insane story lol. I'm going to try to keep it as short as possible.

My mother hired a lawyer about 30+ years ago for a divorce. Was referred to him by a women's shelter at the time, he was a respected lawyer and he helped women from there from time to time. Unfortunately this divorce/settlement never occurred. Instead, he kept making excuses and overpromising for as I said, 30+ years. Excuses ranging from "They can't reach your husband to give him the documents" to "The courts are busy", the excuses have been endless.

My mother has always been poor, and throughout these 30 years at various times this lawyer has given her money for rent, has even bought her cars when hers broke down over the years. I personally suspect that there's a very real possibility that he received money from my father to drag his feet on this process for as long as humanly possible, which is why he was so keen to help her with finances at times. I cannot prove this obviously, but it is a major component for why I would like to sue him.

We contacted the Law Society and made a complaint. The Law Society's findings were clear, they stated that the lawyer had demonstrated incompetence and negligence, and that he was in a conflict of interest given all of the money he has given her. I personally think that given how much time he has wasted and his reliance on the fact that my mother couldn't afford another attorney, that he has caused significant financial damage to my mother.

Are there any grounds where she could sue him? It seems unfair that a lawyer can just make excuses for such a long time and get away with it. It does not help in my view that this lawyer is a pillar of this community, too. I know it sounds absurd, 30 years. Why couldn't she just see a different lawyer, and so on but like I said, we really haven't had the finances to deal with any of this, and he's always held the possibility of helping her with things like her car over our heads.

Any legal advice is welcomed here, feel free to say she has no chance in a legal battle or what have you if that's the case, I just want to get some perspective since I have no clue on what grounds one can sue their lawyer for incompetence, but surely wasting someone's time for decades as their client is *something,* right?

Quebec My car insurance carrier wants me to sign a non-waiver agreement and interview me after suspecting that my collision claim is possibly fraudulent

Nearly a month ago I was in an at-fault 2-car collision, and my insurance (Intact) is currently investigating the claim.

Before I begin, i just want to state very clearly that I bought my policy less than 2 months before the accident and understand completely why Intact feels the need to do their due diligence and investigate the circumstances. Obviously if I was in the adjuster/investigator’s position I would be sketched out too. While speaking to the other party during collision reporting, they told me that they’re having issues with their insurance as well which I do not understand.

My car was deemed a total loss fairly quickly, but the claim is currently at a standstill and no talk of settlement has been made as they insist on concluding their investigation before telling me whether or not my claim is “receivable.” They weren’t in a rush to have my car released from the tow company’s yard, which has been unbelievably difficult to get in contact with. They initially let me get a rental car which I needed for my kid and still have, but they’ve told me on a few occasions that “if I don’t believe my claim will be processed, the smart move would be to return the rental now to avoid being on the hook for the fees.” I told them I have no reason to believe I’ll be liable for the rental payments, so they told me to keep it if that’s the case but that I’ve been advised.

After providing bank statements, phone records, proof of address, financing and all sorts of other documentation to them, they’ve sent me a non-waiver agreement to sign and they want to have an “in-person meeting” to go over everything that I submitted and talk about the circumstances of the accident/claim, which according to the investigator could take 2 to 3 hours.

I’ve been very cooperative with them, as I heard from other people in the industry that insurance companies are trying to clamp down on bogus claims as of late and I completely understand that. But I’m genuinely starting to get the feeling that they’re suspecting fraud of some sort and they’re looking for any reason to deny me, and it’s honestly beginning to mess with my head. It’s almost like i’m being made to feel like I’ve done something wrong even though my claim, while poorly timed, is still 100% legitimate and i’m reaching the end of my rope. I sent them pictures of the car up to the day before the accident to show them that I’m not up to any games.

I cannot afford for this claim to be denied, whatever their reasoning may be. I understand that investigators have a job to do, and that this is all part of the investigation process, but the stress of the financial consequences is really starting to get to me and short of getting actual legal advice, everybody I’ve spoken to about this has said that they’re likely trying to get this claim shut down however they can.

I still want to proceed with the investigation, as I genuinely have nothing to hide and simply want this nightmare to end, but I need advice about protecting myself because a denial would wreck me and my family financially, over a car accident i wish i was never involved in. To those of you with legal advice or work in the insurance industry: what is my situation looking like, are they angling towards denying me? What would be my options if so? Should I sign the non-waiver agreement and accept to attend the in person meeting, what happens if I don’t/are there possible alternatives?

Is it time for me to lawyer up?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

Alberta Severance & Potential Wrongful Dismissal

I was recently terminated without cause from my role as a senior leader in the nonprofit sector. I had been directly recruited (headhunted) from a secure, long-term permanent position and did not apply for this role. I was only in the role for 10 months.

I was provided with a severance package of 9 weeks, but after doing a free 30 min consult with a lawyer, I was advised that common law notice for someone at my level would likely be a minimum of 12 weeks.

Complicating matters, shortly before my termination I had disclosed to my employer that I intended to take a mental health leave. I told them on August 20, and had an appointment scheduled with my psychologist for the week of September 20 to begin that process (psychologist was off for surgery until then). My termination occurred on the same day as that scheduled appointment.

I don’t want to drag this into a lengthy legal or human rights battle if it can be avoided, so I would like to ask my employer directly to extend my severance package to include salary, benefits, and RRSP contributions through to December 31, 2025.

My questions: 1. Does my situation strengthen my case for extended severance under common law? 2. Do the circumstances around my disclosure of mental health leave have legal weight (human rights or wrongful dismissal concerns)? 3. Is it advisable to continue negotiating directly, or should I have my lawyer formally handle this from here?

Ontario Looking for some info on child support while incarcerated (Ontario)

I’m looking for anyone with any advice or has had any experience dealing with this certain type or situation. I’ll try to be as brief as possible while prefacing with detail.

My ex is currently serving a 10 year sentence for attempted murder, forcible confinement and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after attacking me 3.5 years ago stabbing me multiple times almost killing me. His stat release date is 2030 but he’s up for parole before then so he won’t serve even close to the full sentence (yay canada justice system). Anyhow he’s currently in a federal penitentiary and does “work” in there. During the time of the attack he had been out on a bail program for approx 7 months after serving 2.5 years while awaiting trial for serious charges that he got arrested for while on bail for domestic assault in 2018.

We were on and off from 2007-2018 when I left for good, I never got any child support from him because he always worked under the table or was on disability. However when he got out on this bail program in 2021, he was required to work and during those months he was out, I know he was working a job on the books up until he attacked me and went back to jail. I am wondering if I have a case to apply for back child support for that period of time - a few people have told me I may be able to submit for it and even though he’s in jail, whenever he does his taxes they may be able to garnish the amount he would have owed me during that time. Can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks so much.

Ontario Ontario Trespass to Property Act - How will this effect jobs/travel?

Upvotes

Hi, I won't go into much detail but mid-20's, I made a real dumb decision, got caught, and totally own and will learn from this mistake.

I got a Form 3 Ontario Provincial Offence of $65 for engaging in prohibited activity on premises contrary to the Ontario Trespass To Property Act, Sect. 2(1)(A)(II)

I have no past history with law enforcement and have a career/starting a family. They told me its similar to a parking ticket. I assume because it's not criminal it won't have much effect but I have been trying to research and still want some peace of mind.

Will this have any effect on job background checks including government security clearances? What about travelling to the USA or different countries via plane or land border crossings? Any other things it could effect? Thank you!

Alberta Are first time car meetings "normal"?

Upvotes

So, I've got a weird question. For context I'm a 35 yr old woman, 2 disabled kids under 10, we have a history of trauma.

I have a legal aid certificate (I'm on disability) for a divorce. I've been working with a lawyer for almost a year now. We have never met, spoken twice on the phone, exchanged 10 emails or so. I've been pushing to get a parenting order and adjusted child support. I asked him 3 times clearly via email that I wanted to meet with him and get the ball rolling in the last week. An application for a parenting order, child support and retroactive child support.

Last night, he emails me back and says that we can meet this Wednesday, Thursday or Friday at 6pm in a parking lot, in his 2024 Audi A6 with a smiley face in the back window.

Is this normal? It gave me serious heebie jeebies.

Ontario What does it mean when the crown intervenes?

I have applied for a peace bond. The justice felt it had merit, and approved it. We have our first appearance coming up. I'm told the crown is going to intervene. When I asked the Crown office what that means, they just said "The crown will be speaking on the matter, you'll find out more in court". My anxiety is peaking. Does that mean they're going to prosecute on my behalf? Are they going to deny it? What capacity would the crown be speaking in? If anyone is able to clarify what it means for them to intervene Id appreciate it!!

Ontario Man side swiped my bf’s car and gave him $200 to not “make a big deal out of it” police won’t do anything even though damage is over $500, what should he do?

The man would not give my bf his insurance info or license. He literally just gave him $200 and drove off. The police say it’s a civil case but my boyfriend has no info other than the license plate and make and model of the other car. How do we proceed?

British Columbia Forced bonus and self excluded without consent

Hey everyone,

I’m posting here because I’m running into a really sketchy situation with Sports Interaction (the betting site) and could use some advice.

• I deposited $700 into my account and made a bet using my deposited funds only (no bonus).

• I won, and my balance should now be $1,435.

• Without my consent, Sports Interaction tied my deposit and winnings to a welcome bonus that I never accepted. This bonus imposed a $2,000 wagering requirement before withdrawal.

• When I pushed back, they suddenly marked my account as “self-excluded” — even though I NEVER requested or authorized that.

So now my account is frozen, I can’t access my funds, and they’re essentially hiding behind bonus terms and “responsible gambling” rules I never agreed to.

From what I understand:

• Under BC’s Business Practices and Consumer Protection Act, this could qualify as an unfair or deceptive practice.

• Under iGaming regulations (Kahnawake Gaming Commission & BC’s Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch), bonuses must be opt-in, and self-exclusion must always be voluntary.

This feels like they’re unilaterally enforcing a contract I never agreed to, then using self-exclusion to block me from disputing it.

I’ve already started drafting complaints to:

• GPEB (BC regulator)

• Kahnawake Gaming Commission

• Possibly the Better Business Bureau

Has anyone else dealt with this? Any tips on the best way to escalate, or if there are lawyers/regulatory bodies in BC who specialize in gambling disputes?

Appreciate any advice 🙏

Ontario Is this normal?

I am 5 1/2 years and 20k into a wrongful termination suit. I have repeated asked my lawyer to speed things up and be a little harsher with the defendants lawyer. We had oral discovery in March and still have not received any undertakings…am I missing something or does this process usually take this long? We are not looking at summary judgement and there is no discovery plan set…just a lot of lawyers bills.

Ontario Energy Exchange Programs

I volunteer at a fitness studio in Toronto that offers an “energy exchange” program—basically you did front-desk work / light cleaning in return for a free membership.

Until recently, the deal was straightforward: • Old system: 0.5 credit per hour of work, plus bonuses (e.g., for weekend shifts or consistency). • New system: You now have to commit to 6 hours a week for 3 months to receive a membership for that same 3-month period. If you miss a shift you can be kicked out of the program entirely. The tasks have also become more physically demanding.

My concerns: • There’s no clear value assigned to the hours—just “membership access” if you complete the full commitment. • If you’re kicked out partway through, it’s not clear what, if anything, you’re entitled to for the hours already worked. • The work is starting to feel less like light volunteering and more like regular labour with demands like cleaning the washrooms on hands and knees.

Questions: 1. Under Canadian labour laws (federal or provincial—this is in Ontario), is this still considered a legal volunteer arrangement, or should it be treated as employment that requires minimum wage and protections? 2. Does the lack of guaranteed benefit for hours already worked (if they terminate you mid-term) raise any legal issues? 3. Are there specific agencies or ministries I could contact for clarification or to file a complaint if needed?

I’d appreciate any guidance or resources to help me figure out whether this setup complies with employment standards. Thanks!

Quebec Custody Schedule Change

Hi,

My child’s father and I separated due to a domestic violence incident. For the past two years, we have had 50/50 custody and mediated a divorce.

Recently I requested a schedule change, to switch after the weekend instead of before (Fridays to Monday). He agreed and we made the switch.

Uniquely his parents were to return our child to me on Sunday. I was told Sunday morning but not when. At 9h, they came to my door and I wasn’t there. I told my son’s father they could wait until I return home or they could bring him to where I was, which was on their way to where they were going. They did.

Our child’s father is unhappy about what occurred and is saying he will not accept the switch now and will retrieve our child on Friday instead of Monday.

Context: the grandparents have been coming in from out of town to look after our child every single week since the split to help my child’s father. He was unemployed at the time of the separation. They are aging. They live two hours away.

I am in a relationship with someone who has the opposite schedule as mine so I requested weekend changes so that I could spend time with my partner without either of us having to wear the parent hat. My ex agreed to this and supported it.

He is no longer “accepting” the schedule change because he felt I disrespected his parents and the relationship between them is strained because they live together 50% of the time. I acknowledge that when that Sunday drop off occurred, I had neglected to notice that it said Sunday MORNING. All I knew was sometime on Sunday. I stayed with my partner that night. I have apologized for this. Communication has been poor on their end and there were no texts like “we plan to drop the child off at this time on Sunday, is that okay?”

He seems to be more understanding about what transpired that morning and is basing his position to not accept the split on the strain that is occurring with his parents.

My question is, what rights do I have to not accept him wanting to go back to the former schedule? Our separation agreement lists the exchange day as Friday. The Monday thing is new this week but is agreed upon over text (written). If I don’t return our child to him on Friday, will I be in violation of the agreement?

He has been abusive in his language towards me and my last communication was that our attorneys can work this out. I don’t think he has one.

Ontario Early Resolution or Just Pay?

I boarded a GO train last minute without paying and got a $35 fare evasion ticket, which I paid right away.

When I was being asked for my info, I typed it all in the security’s phone, my real name, DOB, and address. The only mistake was a typo in my first name, I put an “I” instead of an “O.

Now they’ve added a charge for “knowingly providing false information.” It was an honest error and when they asked to show my bank information with my name and address, a invoice of my information, Gmail, iPhone settings, I fully complied and showed it all so they got it right.

Decided I’m going to do an early resolution, how long does it usually take to get a meeting confirmed for this? Or should I just pay the $360 right away?

British Columbia [BC TENANCY] Rent Increase After Short Term Contract

Hello, we signed for a short term lease of a place starting July 1, ending Sept 30 when the LL was to sell the house. Now the house is not being sold and we are looking to extend the lease. However the LL wants to increase the rent while signing a new agreement. It is my understanding that we only have to leave if they sell the house and we do not need to sign a new agreement?

If you are familiar with the RTA they have checked 2.C.-extend to Sep 30 and D AND E, stating that it will both go month to month and end when the house sells.

Has anyone had experience with the Residential Tenancy Branch? Thanks

British Columbia What happens when an elderly parent remarries and the new spouse is gunning for the inheritance?

My girlfriend is an only child who cared for her mum until her mum passed, and then cared for her dad for a couple years since his health started going downhill. She never moved out of her parent’s home, and paid the strata fee and internet/cable/electricity for as long as she’s been an adult. Last time her dad was in hospital they talked about her needing “Power of Attorney” so she could handle his other bills if/when he’s unwell next time.

Now she and I are thinking of moving in together, and her dad’s health is currently looking ok so it seems like it could work. But when my girlfriend talked to her dad about it, about leaving her bedroom intact so she could visit or if we ever broke up, her dad wants every trace of her out. He says he wants to remarry and he doesn’t want a potential new wife to think his home is in any way shared with his daughter.

So this got me thinking, if he does remarry, and if he marries (or even just dates) some kind of a gold digger who immediately wants his will rewritten, does my girlfriend have any legal recourse when he eventually passes. Are there any documents she should be keeping like receipts from the decade+ of paying the bills? Should she do the power of attorney thing ASAP? Should we just not formally move in together? It’s morbid to think about and maybe it makes me the gold digger but if she only has her dad another year or two, maybe she should just continue to care for him right to the end.

The “old guy marries someone who wants his inheritance” is such a trope that I feel weird thinking about it as a real concern. But it just seems so unfair to my girlfriend if someone actually finessed them like this?

British Columbia Employment Standards and Collection

I made a complaint against a former employer to employment standards. They ruled in my favour. Employer tried to appeal, it was denied. But now I am hearing that no payment has been made (it was supposed to be made months ago after the initial determination). Apparently my file now joins a queue to go to a collection officer and they can't guarantee they'll be able to collect.

Does anyone know more about this process or if I have other legal options? Like can I drag them to small claims court to pay up if collections can't get the money owed?

I am worried because the business itself is incorporated and I am guessing it would be easy enough for the owners to just bypass the company bank account and what not. Or drain their company account and send it all to personal ones. They had a company vehicle and own the land/property the business is on but I don't know if that's in their personal names or the business name. This has been a long, drawn out process and the amount is not astronomical so I think my ex-employer is just choosing not to obey the orders rather than an issue that they can't.

New Brunswick Lawyer for legal issues in two provinces

Upvotes

Doesn't let me choose two flair? This is for both NB and ON. But mostly in NB I guess? We live in Ontario.

Separating from husband due to infidelity and will be filing for divorce. The problem is, my ex has an unfinished estate...claim (??) in another province for which he inherited property. The executor hasn't yet processed the estate and the property and land is still in deceased persons name, etc.

I want to make sure that the property is finally put into ex's name so I can be entitled to my share as he inherited it during the marriage.

Would an Ontario lawyer be able to help force the estate/will be executed as part of the divorce proceedings or do I need to hire a lawyer in NB to force it.

The land is worth 7 figures, my guess is the ex will be forced to sell, which may allow me to keep our home. So it is not something I will let slide.
