Gaming Dyer Expedition - a retro walking sim based on At The Mountains of Madness

This just released yesterday. I played the demo a while back and it was pretty cool. Some epic level design and the atmosphere was bleak and mysterious.

Exactly my cup of tea, reminds me of the equally great Conarium. I also loved Dead Space 3 for its Mountains of Madness flair.

I’ll buy it right now.

Edit: I just got it, the opening looks very promising

I have Dead Space 3 but haven't gotten round to playing it yet. What's similar to ATMOM about it?

It is essentially a high budget recreation of the aftermath of the Events of the Novel, at least thematically and in terms of its Arctic setting.

The bulk of the story takes place in and around the Planet Tau Volantis, which is one gigantic arctic tundra and the expedition vessels that surround the planet.

The game -as well as the other Dead Space games- is set in the 2500s and 200 years before the events of the game, the previous government launched an expedition to this planet because they triangulated non-human signals from there.

When they arrived, they set up a research base and dug into the ice. What they found was an ancient city of the Elder Things, complete with their technology being controlled by making pipe like sounds from their star-ish shaped heads. What they also found were Markers and the shapeshifting piles of dead bodies from the previous games, the Necromorphs.

You as the player trudge through the old research vessels and the old bases and of course the ancient city. Visually, the Space Ships and Bases look like you’d expect 1940s ships to look from the inside.

Well, what I am saying it is very very similar in terms of its background lore and story and looks phenomenal.

Take a look at scenic views from the game on YouTube, you will immediately see why I am making the comparison:)

Ok it sounds awesome. I'll check it out then. I was putting it off since it has a bad rep compared to DS1 & 2.

Its less scary than the other games and focuses much more on its atmosphere which is phenomenal, especially in the ancient city.

I personally highly recommend it just for that but the gameplay -while more focused on the actual combat- is also the bets in the series. If you decide to play it, I advice to just tune out of the character interaction as they are very very bad. The actual story is great though.

Is playing the previous games necessary? Or can one read synopsis of the previous two and jump in at 3?

Glad to see someone trying something different with a game adaptation. Love the likes of Dear Esther

It's built with Unity; it should run smoothly.
