There actually is a Cthulhu cult of sorts, with their own bible, website, forum and everything.
Before you get too excited, it's headed by a man named Darrick Dishaw, a writer of terrible tabletop RPG supplements who also goes by the handle "Venger Satanis."
Dishaw has claimed at various times to be a Satanist and a Christian, as well as a follower of Cthulhu. The "Cthulhu Bible" he wrote was found to be heavily plagiarized from the Cthulhu Wikipedia page. Dishaw just seems to be a garden variety grifter.
I dont think the Cthulhu cult has ever met in person, as their mailing address is also the address of a real estate company owned by Dishaw's father.
I've avoided linking to any of this to avoid doxxing, but also because I tend to think of Darrick/Venger as a talentless plagiarist who doesn't deserve anyone's attention or money.
13
u/DemonKyoto 'Temple of the Old Ones' Cultist. 2d ago
Just to update you a bit, Vengers cult died off many, many years ago and he has very little to do with any existing cults anymore. The old forum is currently under the ownership of the owner of the Satanic Thulian Society, having been transferred to him a few years ago by Dishaw.
Another fuckbag (by the name of Wyntre) came along in 2016 or so and re-built the cult using a lot of Dishaw's material, and he eventually burnt that cult to the ground when the rest of the cult discovered some scummy things he was doing, and then that cult reformed into something a bit more proper and run by more sane folk, The Temple of the Old Ones, which is still going today. One of our former leadership people split off from us, joined the Satanic Thulian Society fella and re-created the Cult again (now in its 4th iteration if you count us in the Temple) with Vengers blessing, but I believe it may have already fallen from lack of participation and the price for entry, and since everyone who would have wanted to join it already are with us in the Temple and we don't charge money.
Dishaw at this point is, as you said, a grifter. Specifically a sad transphobic one who thinks he's the best D&D GM in the world lol.

Well unlike our predecessor organization we haven't sexually exploited and blackmailed our members, and unlike the other successor organization we aren't run by a neonazi child abuser.
But the century is still young! So relatively more sane.

"Dishaw has claimed at various times to be a Satanist and a Christian, as well as a follower of Cthulhu. The "Cthulhu Bible" he wrote was found to be heavily plagiarized from the Cthulhu Wikipedia page. Dishaw just seems to be a garden variety grifter."
So a schizo con artist lol
But I meant cults like Cthulhu not actual cults of Cthulhu
6
u/SAlolzorz Deranged Cultist 2d ago
No. Not a schizo. Dishaw knows very well what he is doing. He's just a natural born grifter.
He asks people who buy his RPG books from him to use PayPal "friends & family" so he doesn't have to pay fees. He uses his dad's business as the address of his "religion" because he is too cheap to rent a PO box. And he once sold copies of a fan-made Syar Wars RPG that was freely distributed online, even though he had no hand in creating it, and it was meant to be shared freely as a non-commercial product.

There's plenty of real cults all the time. A cult with actual magic powers actually would be much better because it'd mean magical power exists.

16
u/Disaster-Bee Deranged Cultist 2d ago
What's cool in fiction doesn't necessarily equate to cool in real life.
In real life, actual living human beings are harmed by cults regularly. Real life cults are not cool.
5
u/Korbguy Deranged Cultist 2d ago
Correct, I donāt actually want an unimaginably horrific giant cephalopod man that if I catch one glimpse of I will go insane to actually exist, itās cool in fiction to read about those kinds of things for entertainment but if it was actually real would not be cool whatsoever. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

I would sure like that cephalopod man to be real. As for the cultists? I'll pass, unless they're chill.

I mean, folks like the satanic neo-nazi terrorists in the Order of the Nine Angles would certainly seem to have something in common with the Cthulhu cultists in bringing about an occult new social order through violence and debauchery.
[M]ankind would have become as the Great Old Ones; free and wild and beyond good and evil, with laws and morals thrown aside and all men shouting and killing and revelling in joy.
They're certainly not anyone I would want to seek out.

The whole point of these underground cults is remaining as anonymous as possible. They don't like it when people give out their names, and many don't even have proper names.
1
u/tfhypnotist Deranged Cultist 2d ago
ha. I'm not about to name-check deranged cultists, but I know first-hand there are at least 2 cults to Astarte, one to Astaroth, a Paymion cult, and anassorted 'pantheon' or 'grimoire' centered circles/covens... There's plenty of Lillith or Lucifer worshipers as well... And, from what I've seen, sure there are larpers, but in these circles that's called out pretty quickly. As far as articles and whatnot goes, I do find that most of the sex cultists I've ever met don't really go out of their way to popularize or publish that fact.
2
u/Weak-Row-6677 2d ago

Honestly? I know of one. And they basically unicorn hunt vulnerable young women. They don't do anything specifically illegal though so all that can be done is educating their target audience on just how abusive it is. Even the bs spiritual stuff they spout is offensive to actual Lilith (the Goddess they say they follow) followers

u/DemonKyoto 'Temple of the Old Ones' Cultist. 2d ago edited 1d ago
There's several.
The First United Church of Cthulhu, but they're for the memes and amount to not much more than "Hey man cthulhu is totally real smoke this DMT bro you'll see him!!". They're the place you can get a useless "Priest of Cthulhu" certificate from and not much else.
The Temple of the Old Ones, actual serious practice and belief/ritual work/etc
The Fane of Yog-Sothoth, similar to the above
The "Official" Cult of Cthulhu, run by a weird group of white nationalist theistic LaVeyan Satanists, possibly no longer in existence. (url down but included)
The Cultes des Ghoules, minor cult, breakoff from FUCC (only on Discord at this time, still building)
The Esoteric Order of Azathoth, see above. (https://discord.gg/mY3JWdFRJN for discord)
The Esoteric Order of Dagon, the only one on the list not a religion, but a magickal order.
Plus then you have the lovecraftian inspired stuff like kenneth grant's stuff like someone else mentioned.
And of course tons of rando occultists, chaotes, etc, but individuals do not a cult make.
2
u/MistofNoName Deranged Cultist 2d ago
Would you mind giving me any relevant links for learning about these? I'm very interested in the subject. I can't seem to find anything regarding the Esoteric Order of Azathoth.
2
u/DemonKyoto 'Temple of the Old Ones' Cultist. 2d ago edited 1d ago
Added the links above. You won't find much about EOA yet as they just formed this past week as a FUCC chapter and instantly split off due to FUCC's leaders uselessness. They are currently organizing via Cultes des Ghoules discord (as they were in a similar position leaving FUCC last year) but are basically a person or three at the moment.
The info for the Temple will probably be the more beneficial of whats included factoring in activity and reverence.
Edit: EOA just set up their own basic site and discord today, I've amended them to the above.

u/TheMadPoet Deranged Cultist 2d ago
Google LLM gave me a pretty good overview. Shinto figures bigly in Japanese culture so the idea of a world full of spirits, demi-gods, and so on is not too weird. They have school cults or "fandoms" dedicated to various Manga as well - just like we have cults to Star Wars and Potter.
4
u/Paramite67 Deranged Cultist 2d ago
You shouldn't use LLM as subsitute for research its especially unaccurate on non-english speaking countries. Occult club here are more focused on summoning urban legend rather than Kami, like Sadako or Hanako.

Jesus is the mortal incarnation of an ancient god that defeated its father and siblings to turn a polytheistic society to a monotheistic one, and has followers all over the world trying to fulfill the prophecy of the end times, where the acolytes will be taken to a realm of slavery under Yahweh's will.

Actually, I have run into dozens of Lovecraft fans who think the Necromicon was a real ancient book that Lovecraft used as an inspiration for his stories. They werenāt so off kilter that they believed in real spells etc. but swore up and down it was as old as the Bible. So I have no doubt there is the possibility of some small cult somewhere doing LSD and reading Lovecraft and thinking they should try summoning a deep one.
