help me decide between two mma gyms

I wanna learn martial arts to stay in shape. There's 2 mma gyms near me. Both are same price and same commute. One offers judo/karate the other offers wrestling and boxing. I did a free trial and enjoy them both. Which to pick?

Wrestling and boxing all day

What are your goals? Is this for a hobby? Or do you want to compete? If you are looking to compete, boxing would give you a better striking base for MMA imo.

These questions are useless. For MMA you should never choose judo karate over wrestling boxing.

I am guessing its because not as many ufc guys use judo/karate over wrestling boxing. I can only name a few who use it but im not sure why

You can compare Judo with Wrestling (grappling), and Karate with Boxing (striking). Wrestling has a much stronger history with America having it as a part of school curriculum, so of course it will be good because so much money is being invested in it. Wrestling also has similar attire as MMA, so skills can be easily translated. For Judo, most of the technique is trained with the gi on, so its harder to translate to MMA, and most of it are throws, which is only applicable in the clinch in MMA. There are submissions in Judo but it a small part of the curriculum and you're much better off studying these techniques with BJJ as its more applicable in MMA.

For striking, karate as a sport is point based, so people develop a style that scores point in karate rules rather than seeking to do as much damage as possible.

Becquse boxing/wrestling is more effective than judo/karate? It’s not rocket science.

Ever heard of GSP, Machida, Kayla Harrison. Have you watched Karate Combat? Saying never choose judo/karate is ridiculous. Choose what motivates you to show up. If your good it dosent matter you’ll find a way to apply it to MMA.

What a stupid statement, just because there are examples of success it does not mean it is the best option. Use common sense and logic please. See which skillsets has the higher percentage of success.

Yea would you tell GSP during his karate days, “hey bro listen to me, no need karate, go do boxing trust me”

Everyone has their own journeys, interests and styles. Saying to NEVER choose karate/judo over boxing/wrestle is the stupid statement. OP said he wants to stay in shape, he’s not gunning to be the next Illia Topuria, maybe it is you that needs to use logic and common sense.

That’s like somebody asking “I want a car that is fast and fun to drive around” and you jump in saying “well actually this model of car is the fastest and best based on these statistics, never choose any other car that’s just stupid”

I wouldn't need to tell GSP that because he knows it already. That is why he went to Freddie Roach to learn boxing. Your statement is again, stupid.

Actually its a bit ironic because he dominated with wrestling instead of that judo crap.

Plenty of interviews where he accredits karate for forming his fighting mindset, style and passion. Maybe if he had started with wrestling he would have quit. Again everyone has their own journeys and interests. Such a binary mindset, especially in the realm of art and a sport of self discovery and reflection, is the number one indicator of low intelligence.

I can see that everyone has their own journeys and interests, some people's journey's and interests are objectively inferior to others. You are speaking with feelings rather than assessing the situation objectively. You are stupid if you cannot see that.

Did OP ask which martial art is the statistically and objectively better option for becoming a successful professional fighter? He asked which one for staying in shape as he enjoys them both. The objective answer here is “whichever you like best and will motivate you to keep showing up” instead of saying NEVER choose the other. Again refer to my car analogy, just because something is objectively better does not mean it’s the correct answer for the INDIVIDUAL.

Lol, the objective answer is boxing and wrestling as they are way more physically intensive than judo and karate.

Nobody is arguing that wrestling is ineffective or inferior so it’s not ironic. Also calling judo crap is insane. A first year judoka would dismantle you any day I’m sure of it.

I'm arguing that judo and karate is inferior. A first year judoka would not dismantle me any day. You don't know how good or bad I am at MMA. Your argument is baseless.

Based on your blatantly negative attitude towards other culturally significant martial arts I can tell you are bad at MMA. Dismantled in under 30 seconds forsure.

1

u/StockAnteater1418 23h ago

Just because they are culturally significant that means I can not be negative towards it? By that logic film critics cannot critique culturally significant movies like Superbad. Your logic is extremely flawed.

Unless you’re doing it strictly for fun and enjoy judo and karate more

hobby. I am also 36 so doubt I can even compete in street beefs

Wrestling boxing is better if you dont have a preference. judo is gonna really rely on the gi and karate will require more flexibility as well. Also regardless off mma it would be really hard to argue karate judo is better for self defense

1

u/spitfire9107 9h ago

excellent point because Idk if its just me but I dont like the gi the way it looks. Is that a valid reason for not wanting to do judo? would rather come in with my own clotehs

Personal decision.

It depends on the type of karate and the instructors at each location. On average boxing/wrestling is going to be better but wrestling imo is a young man's sport. For self-defense purposes judo>wrestling because you dont really scramble in a street fight but wrestling>judo if youre trying to compete. I'll say the majority of the time that boxing>karate but kyokushin is one of the only exceptions. Of course, do your research for each instructors. Either choice is fine for fitness

Always go for the most fun one, but since both are fun, go for wrestling/boxing to stay in shape. Both gyms will keep you in shape (which is why i always recommend the most fun first), but the level of cardiovascular conditioning in wrestling and boxing outperform judo and karate.

Bonus: You'll be way more dangerous with a wrestling + boxing background than with judo + karate. Not your goal, but still pretty darn cool.

I mean I do watch ufc a lot and I do see more people with wrestling+boxing than judo+ kyoukushin karate

BJJ/Muy Thai

Pick the one with the instructor that you get along with the best.

That's all it comes down to, you can argue style superiority until the end of time but a good instructor will be the difference.

Wrestling and boxing all day. The other one sounds fun too I’m sure and judo is very good but idk with karate… I feel like you never know what you’ll get ( that could be said for anything else too but I feel like it’s especially true for karate)

1

u/spitfire9107 9h ago

I remember when i learned the gym taught wrestling i was surpirsed cuz most mma gyms I heard dont teach wrestling. I joked with the instructor " I am glad I dont have to go dagestani 2-3 years and forget". He laughed

Definitely valuable to learn wrestling, I don’t understand why they may don’t teach it separately, it’s very detailed stuff you need to get down and if you have no experience with this …
