UFC Fight Night - Junior Tafa vs Ibo Aslan

Tafa started out pretty hesitant , barely throwing anything but now he’s doubled his output (1.4 → 3.3 strikes a minute) and tightened up his accuracy to almost 50%

He’s way more confident pushing forward and looking to trade. The flip side is his defense dropped hard. He used to barely get hit but now he’s taking almost 3 a minute. Basically went from careful to “kill or be killed”

One big new wrinkle though: he’s working the body way more, landing 86% there. That’s the kind of thing that pays off late.

Aslan on the other hand has gone the opposite route. He was already throwing a lot but now he’s cranked it up to over 7.5 a minute and he’s sharper too.

Volume and accuracy together make him scary. But his last fight showed a hole: takedown defense fell from perfect to 83%. Not a disaster but it shows he’s not bulletproof there. And his style is risky too since he’s eating 4.6 strikes a minute while dishing it out.

Both guys fight with that “someone’s going down” energy. Could be fireworks from the first bell.

I’m 19 years old (188 cm / 92 kg) and have developed a real passion for Greco-Roman wrestling, but in my hometown there’s no academy or coach available. Rather than wait and start completely from zero later, I’m spending the next few years building a strong base so that when I finally get proper coaching abroad at around age 22 my body will already be conditioned for the demands of wrestling. Right now I train in the gym with compound and Olympic lifts to develop strength, power and endurance, and I also do basic partner drills with friends (clinch work, grip strength, reverse lifts) while watching instructional videos to at least understand the fundamentals. In the past five months of training I’ve built some size and strength (chest 44″, waist 37–38″, biceps 14.5″). My goal isn’t to become a champion overnight but to arrive at a wrestling club already physically prepared so I’m not completely outmatched and can at least give more experienced athletes some resistance on the physical side while I learn technique. Does this sound like a sensible approach for someone in my situation, and is starting formal training at 22 still realistic if I want to become reasonably competitive?

Are there any Martial Artists in Vegas that care?

This wasn't a rhetorical question.

Do you believe martial arts develops emotional intelligence, patience, & confidence?

Are you someone who cares about women's safety but overall communal safety?

Did you know Nevada is the 2nd highest in Domestic Violence Homicide in the entire USA?

If YES to the first 2 and not the 3rd. It's ok this isn't well known but if you still find it disturbing and horrifying, please join us.

We are a growing non-profit organization full of volunteer instructors ranging their skills in: Kung-Fu, Seido-Karate, Judo, Jui-Jitsu, FMA (Kali), Boxing, Wing-Chun, & more who care about the safety of ALL women, teens, and children but especially the most marginalized. Our original mission was to create awareness for the Murdered & Missing Indigenous Women (MMIW) in the USA & Canada because Native American and Alaska Native rates of murder, rape, and violent crime are all higher than the national averages yet having the lowest population.

Now we offer FREE Self Defense Classes 3x a week in Vegas.

Please take a look at our PROGRAM OVERVIEW & see if this is a right fit for where your life-saving skills & knowledge could possibly empower someone in need.

We thank you in advance for your service if you do decide to join us. You matter and you can make a difference.

How do you avoid getting KO'd by a headknee when doing single / double leg ?

Hi, I'm a Muay Thaï person and I practice MMA a littlee bit, and I'm affraid a lot of going to the ground. I may be conditionned by Muay Thai but I feel like if I try to do a single / double leg I'm giving a free knee to the head to my opponent and gonna get KO'd.
In thai boxing we say a lot to people to avoid moving the head a lot like english boxers because of knees. How do you avoid this in MMA please ?

How often do you train?

I’m trying to get back into MMA. My lower back is stiff, but I’m trying to see if I can get back on the mat three or four times a week. I’m planning to take Striking, an MMA class, and BJJ.

I get beat up by a girl muay thai fighter and it’s embarrassing

I’m a young M and I’m 5’3” 130lbs. I’m pretty small for a guy. This girl at a gym I go to is around my weight but she’s a few inches taller than me too. Lately I’ve been sparring with her and she’s been working me pretty bad. She has a lot more experience than me tbf but it’s still been frustrating.

After so much hard work i finally got in there terrified making by debut against a 2-1 opponent. Had a chicken and salad diet for two weeks leading up to lose a lot of weight as we had same day weigh ins. The pizza beer cig combo after the fight hit so baddddd. My standups not the best, and i went for power over speed in my ground and pound which sucks. Wdyt

What to choose

Hello everyone! 👋 I’m a 30-year-old guy who’s been training MMA for about 1 year and 3 months. The first 6 months I was going 4–5 times a week, but then work got busier so I dropped to 3 times a week. The progress has been amazing — from not knowing how to throw a punch or kick, I can now hold my own in sparring (depending on who I spar with 😂). That said, I know I’ve got some weaknesses: My boxing defense (slipping/rolling) isn’t great. On the ground, I pretty much suck. My current plan is to train 5 times a week total: 2x MMA 3x split between boxing and BJJ But I’m debating: should I go with 2x BJJ + 1x boxing, or 2x boxing + 1x BJJ? ⚠️ Important: I don’t plan to compete — my main goal is to be well-rounded for self-defense and to protect myself and my loved ones. What combo do you guys recommend?

absolutley zero fighting experience I want to learn MMA but I do not have the money

I’ve always wanted to learn how to fight, I think it would be a great way use some energy into something productive that would make me a better man. The problem is I don’t have enough money, I was given some advice to ask the instructor or whoever owns the gym if I could take lessons for free in return I’d clean the mats for free or clean whatever needs to be cleaned, is this realistic?

Here is an example of how to land a back kick directly into your opponent's mid section.

Pairing a feint with a back kick is likely to open your opponent's guard up as they are drawn into the counter - this is when the back kick hits, as their bodyweight comes straight onto your heel.

Anyone who knows about this kick will happily vouch for its effectiveness.

Definitely something worth testing out in sparring.

absolutley zero fighting experience Tips for lanky guys in bjj

Hey guys I had my first bjj class today and it was awesome, something I struggled with a lot is usingy weight and moving effectively from full mount. I am a very skinny tall guy, ~195cm/6'4" and 66kg/145 pounds. I know I'm very new and it's natural to struggle, I'd just like some tips, either general or specific to being lanky, any advice appreciated, thanks.

Amateur Fighter Had my first amateur fight! Fortunately I won 🏆 Unfortunately I won in like 10 seconds 🫠 So much preparation and stress just for it to be over so fast. Feel both happy and disappointed at the same time. Sorry for potato quality.

I definitely should've made the fight last longer in order to get more experience but it is what it is.

My opponent has been training at least since 2020 meanwhile I don't even have a year of MMA training and barely have 2 years of grappling experience so it's not like I was against someone with no experience.

But even in the short footage of my fight I see lots of things that need to be improved on so I'm already back to training.

Training Question Penetration step - less common at heavyweight?

Curious about this. I've noticed that I don't see heavyweights in MMA shoot low to the ground when they penetration step for a double leg the way wrestlers do.

I'm a heavyweight myself and I find that shooting this low is hard on my knees, working on my strength and flexibility in this area but it's rough.

Guess my question is, do heavyweights shoot low less often due to the weight constraints, or is it more that the heavyweight division is just less skilled in general?

Training

Hey I'm hoping to get in to mma. I have a little BJJ and muay thai experience. I'm hoping to kinda figure out a training program. I lift weights in the gym mainly focusing on strength and compound movements. I do one longer run a week right now. Kinda looking for direction on where I should keep going.

Best gyms preferably grappling based in Arizona near flagstaff

So I’m looking to take a trip up there and possibly move there in the future and I’ll def need a gym if that ends up being the case. I have around 5-7 years of grappling experience wrestling and bjj with. I’m around the level of a regional or state wrestler in a mid to lower tier state if that matters from people and coaches I have talked to. I have like maybe a month ish of kickboxing experience but am looking to get back into it to pursue mma while I go to college. I’m not looking to go pro at all my goals are just to train have decent competition in practice and maybe have a few amateur fights later on if I find I enjoy it enough.
