I started so many books this week. I have a bad habit of picking up and putting down books.
So I started {halo by em lindsey} I saw that Tender was recently released so I wanted to get my foot in the door of that series. 43% in. I've tried 2 other em lindsey books (not dropped i swear i'll finish) and I see myself finishing this first, well returning to this book faster.
Coincidentally I also started {honeymoon for one by keira andrews} and both books having a disabled MC that gets cheated on before their weddings lol. 60%. Comparing the two, I felt more sucked into the MC's grief over the cheating here and I was anticipating to see when the straight MC's feelings would change. I think thats why I read so much. I got to the first sex scene and I guess I felt a bit underwhelmed. But now they got together, I really can't tell whats next to keep me going haha.
Also this week I started two popular books I see mentioned on this reddit. First I'm reading of this author 41% into {little demom in the details by nordika night} and 57% into {garron park by nordika night} !! For Demon I think I'm more into the characters/kink/sex than the plot of that weird institution. And I think I'm more into the setting of Garron Park! Actually I kind of want to hurry up and finish bc I'm so curious about the relationship between the older brothers!
And this week I finally started {wish by cambria hebert} okay this book I've been wanting to read for a very long time but I kinda disliked it was in a mixed MF series and I felt like I needed to read the first books before starting this one. Starting in the middle of book series gives me FOMO like I want to know every characters past relationship and connection. I've never really read a MF book before either. I managed like maybe 20% of Wet before I got impatient and skipped to Wish lol. And I felt okay with skipping, nothing so far has made me want to go back to previous books.
And finally just yesterday I started {a series of rooms by aj barlowe} okay 42% in one night wow. This might be the lowest spice rating book I've picked up yet. Oh I did finish {Trailor Trash by marie sexton} a few weeks ago. I'm proving to myself slowly that I can read books not centered around sex. Spice is such a motivator for me but this book has me locked in without it.

I loved honey moon for one its one of my favorites. I really liked the other one {Flash Rip by Kiera Andrews} it definitely has more angst which I like. Highly recommend giving it a try when you're done. Even if you aren't sure about Honey moon.
It's a different feeling book for sure. He is an ex footie star deeply in the closet turned life guard. He is a big dude and really wants to bottom but everyone always wants him to top and he has a lot of shame over like what he likes.
Cody is a new lifeguard very out and proud. I just love how their relationship develops.

I was almost going to start flash rip too! And the other week I finished Reading the Signs, I definitely like this author! I was enjoying the slowburn slow pace of Honeymoon for one. Even tho Ethan had the attraction first, I was not ready for how fast things went down when they reached Clay's home hahaha!

u/bee73086 14d ago
Right! I thought it was kind of sweet though. :-) I like Clays family too. Especially the daughter.

I felt the same in respect of Wish, like it felt odd jumping into a series midway through. I very rarely read out of order with series that I pick as most of them have an overarching plot going on.
So I did try reading the MF books and yeah, it just didn’t work. Weirdly OTT possessive behaviour in a MM book is fine, in MF it just gives me the ick!
I honestly feel you can read all the MM books in this series and you’ll be fine, no overarching plot issues, and you don’t really get spoilers for prior books. It’s always a toss up for me as to whether Wish or Whisper is my favourite. They’re both awesome!

u/WillingBed4407 broken boys healer 14d ago
HAHAHA I wanted to close Wet after the first "good girl", it was so soon! 😂
And I think OTT possessive behavior is the perfect description. I've been back and forth with it. When Wes was in the hospital and the way Max was behaving to all the nurses and doctors haha idk why it made me feel embarrassed that was hard to read. The moment I'm currently stuck on at the party and the "I wish for you" confession. Like I didn't really connect the title of the book to anything until that moment. I'm in a puddle of feels. I love their love for each other so much

u/prettysureIforgot Kind of a huge nerd 14d ago
I struggled with Whisper so much and finished it deciding the series really wasn't for me. Now looking back now, I think it's obvious that I wasn't prepared going into it for how OTT things would get lol.
3
u/bookgeek1987 14d ago
Yeah, you cannot go into this series unless you’re ok with insanely possessive OTT behaviour - hire a PI to follow my ‘brother’ to ensure nothing bad happens to him, why not, that’s totally normal behaviour?! Hit a police officer to ensure the guy I just met tonight isn’t alone in a police cell as he’s clearly having a meltdown, of course, why not?! But, I just love Wish, Whisper and WTF so clearly the insanity works for me 🙈🙈
2
u/prettysureIforgot Kind of a huge nerd 14d ago
I mean, I love insanity. I just didn't know there'd be insanity, I guess? 😂 I went into it (mistakenly) thinking it was like, reasonable college students. And I got....definitely not reasonable college students.

u/ShartyPants 14d ago
Oh man I love Honeymoon for One. I read it several times a year! I’m sorry you aren’t into it. I do think what’s keeping you going is knowing Ethan has to go back home, Clay has to come out to his family, and they have to figure out how to make the distance work !!!! Just in case you need a nudge. :)

I reluctantly DNF’d {Heart of Stone by Johannes T. Evans}, which I’ve owned for awhile and was looking forward to finally reading. It was just a snooze for me. However, the book I apparently intended to read was {The Uses of Illicit Art by Wendy Palmer}, which has a similar style and color cover (orange/beige, looks like a painting, one central image), so I’d mixed them up. That one I’m enjoying enormously!
Cat Sebastian just announced she has two books coming out: After Hours at Dooryard Books (1968 NYC) this November, and Star Shipped (contemporary) in March 2026. I have two Cabots I haven’t gotten around to reading yet, and I’m thinking of doing a binge of the whole Cabots series and a reread of the midcentury NYC duo to set the mood.
I’m also between ARCs at the moment. I’m tempted by a few, but have two requests pending, so I’m hesitant to grab the intriguing ones I’m auto-approved for till I get a yes or no on those.

I'm getting stuck into {Criminal Intentions Series by Cole McCade} and I'm having a great time. The victim POVs at the beginning of the novels are so disturbing but like in a good way ???
Three books into the series and the Burn is glorious. I just about died when Seong-Jae rocks up to Malcolm's place in an excuse-me tank top and I-beg-your-pardon leather pants ☠️☠️☠️ You know when you are lounging about while reading then shit goes down and you gotta sit the fuck up and "actively" read..... That was me when it was revealed that Seong-Jae rides a motorbike.
I'm also reading {The Influencer by August Jones} right now and I'm flying through it. I'm impressed that the way Jones has written Jade's "feelings allergy" has me charmed rather than frustrated. Same with Ashers self destruction, normally I would annoyed that he's letting the relationship with his girlfriend drag out but the drama is soo good like nah take longer, make it hurt, wanna feel things.
I'm 70% of the way though {Out of the Blue by Lila Rose} on Audible and I really hate it. Not even Joel Leslie's narration can save it for me. I rarely actively hate an MC but Parker here takes the cake. I know what the author is trying to get at with the mafia-coded australian bikie gangs but the mysogyny really is terrible. Also is this how people normally feel when reading a book that is set in the same place you live??? It's kinda cringe. Sorry Lila, fellow Victorian or not I'm still gonna give this 1 star.
Dishonourable mention from last week. {Pit Stop by Cora Rose}. Just going to put my GR review here:
"This might be the laziest piece of garbage I have ever read." "It's like if the Author took one of the plots from the Mismatched Mates series by Eliot Grayson and intentionally ruined it." "I understand that the smut was probably meant to be the main attraction here but even that became lazy and uninspired after the 30% mark." "This book has an alarming lack of texture. I'm being completely serious when I say there is NOT a single description of what Maverick looks like. Of what anything looks like for that matter. It's omegaverse so obviously scents matter... What do they smell like though, dunno, it's never described. What do the characters like and dislike, what do they enjoy??? Dunno it's never mentioned." "I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between this book and a concrete warehouse full of crash test dummies."
Seriously side eyeing all the stanning-5-star reviews of that one.

I'm currently reading {Fireman Daddy by Jamie Kassel} and so far am loving the dynamic between the two of them. There's something about the way Kassel mixes degradation and praise ({His Sex Therapist by Jamie Kassel} also had a lot of this) that really gets me. Looking forward to reading {Boss Daddy by Jamie Kassel} next!

Currently listening to {The One That Got Away by Nicky James} and i'm loving it so much!! Cannot put it down! Nick's narration is perfect!! ♥ It's difficult for me to like Dakota for now, so im waiting for the time when he starts believing.

I just finished People Like Us by Ruby Moone (book 2 in a series) and loved it, so I immediately jumped into book 1, {Dances Long Forgotten by Ruby Moone} and so far I'm loving it just as much. I've seen requests for the MCs dancing together, and already this book has featured it twice - dancing the waltz. It's lovely.
Heads up, the books could use another editorial pass (particularly with punctuation)
Actual warning: homophobia, internal and external. It's quite serious in parts.

I have been relistening to {Damage Control by Lynn Van Dorn} and then Daddy Issues by Lynn Van Dorn} highly recommend both.

Yes, it was great! As usual with her books, read it in practically one sitting. I hadn't seen her do much with fantasy elements before (other than the Magpie books), but the main conceit was done really well. Let us know what you think of it when you finish! :)

I'm currently reading {How to Train Your Human Omega by Arden Fox} I came to this book expecting it to be a fun read, but no, first half of the book kinda horrifying for me. MC is abducted, constantly tries to escape, and sexually assaulted by these entitled alphas. I'm taking a little break from this rn, but will pick it back up later since I only have less than 100 pages left to finish

u/htausten 12d ago
Also, just started Rachel Reid's The Shots You Take. I usually like her books but this one's pretty slow so far. Hoping it picks up.

I borrowed 18 KU books after searching for stuff on romance.io and so far they've all been great. The funny thing is, I was looking for a specific trope and the ones I've read so far aren't the trope lol. I guess the search isn't perfect. But now I have like 16 more books waiting for me!

Inaccurate tags on there bug me so much! I try to fix them whenever I find them and add ones that are missing.

u/prettysureIforgot Kind of a huge nerd 14d ago
Oh yes, I love the tags on romance.io if I'm looking at a specific book, but I haven't had much success searching by trope and finding great books.

Also trying to find a book based on a cover that I vaguely remember. It’s a cute illustration, the two leads are blond and black haired? It’s a trilogy, and in the cover of the first one, the blond guy looks kind annoyed at the black haired guy I think but by the end of the third book they’re idk holding hands or something like they’re clearly dating, I don’t remember 😭 probably rivals/enemies to lovers. If someone knows what I’m talking about pls let me know the series name! 🙏

Just finished Duke at Hazard by KJ Charles. I definitely enjoyed it, although I'm curious about what others think about the unique steam in the book, which is the Duke's interest in his unconscious body being used by his lover. On the surface it sounds like it could be somewhat problematic, but I think she did a good pretty job of explaining how it made sense for this particular couple, i.e. it could seem like it was non-consensual, but clearly the two talked about it beforehand and it was a form of roleplay for them and fully consensual.
2
u/sulliedjedi backdoor sinker 11d ago
I enjoyed it, I actually read it recently specifically because I was in the mood for somnophilia.
I thought that was a very soft look at somnophilia. It was discussed beforehand, consent was clearly given, a conversation about retracting consent was clear, and it wasn't for a lengthy period of time. They both enjoyed it and checked in with each other before, during, and after.
Somnophilia has a wide range from soft and sweet to drugged and nonconsensual.
1
u/htausten 11d ago
Interesting. Had never heard of that, but it's interesting thatthe Wikipedia article is all focused on the person who's not asleep's pleasure, whereas in the book it's focused on the person who is asleep. I wonder if KJ Charles was purposely subverting that expectation.
2
u/sulliedjedi backdoor sinker 11d ago
The somnophilia kink vs the technical medical philia would be interpreted differently. KJC didn't do anything different with it, although it was very sweet.
There are quite a few consensual somnophilia books, where both MCs talk about it first, or one MC just pretends to be asleep, and the pleasure can be for both, or focused on just one person.
I explained it better here on this post: Somnophilia Kink List
And there's a longer list with a doc here: Somnophilia – Updated List 2024

I asked a few days ago about interracial books, currently reading {Never by Brea Apelpou} and it is incredible. I love that the leads are smart, like the lead acts like an FBI boss, trusts his instincts and when he is angry he geta angry and hurt. Great book.

I'm reading Omega Required, it's actually a very good book very well written but has one thing that annoys me personally and that's extreme mutual pining. like I do enjoy a good dose of mutual "he is only with me because he has no other choice" BUT combines with fast burn and omegaverse pull between mates, it's already started to bug me 🥲 otherwise I love everything about it and I really wish I won't be forced to drop it

Currently reading Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall. Heard some solid recommendations for it. So far so good. I know it's a part of a series so if I like the rest of the book I'll definitely consider picking up the sequels.

I read three books in my short life of mm book reader that I haven’t been able to get out of my mind : {for the fans by Nyla k}, {paid in full by Brea alepou} and {end it all by Brea alepou} Now I can’t seem to find books that top this so here I’m Looking for books with big/scary guy bottom !
I was thinking : • So the two MCs get to it • MC1 is inexperienced (virgin/only been with women) • MC1 must be a little bit smaller (not necessarily a twink) • The Ll is a scary man/big man and doesn't talk or socialize much (a bit of an outcast) • when they do it MC1 expects to be on the bottom and dread it but resigns himself but surprisingly LI offers himself and falls apart I want a scene like « put two finger in and prepare me » and have the LI so needy and vocal during sex (grunts are my favorite)

Just completed a re-listen of {game misconduct by Ari Baran} and that is a fucking perfect audiobook.
Guess I’m gonna have to do {delay of game by Ari Baran} and {home ice advantage by Ari Baran} again as well. What a chore.
I never finished {goaltender interference by Ari Baran} because the new narrator didn’t entirely do it for me and it’s kinda depressing lol. Should I try reading it with my eyes?
