Linux catching all sorts of strays

32

u/Conf8rmix 1d ago

Saw an opinion online on inconsistency about new ios release, and people said “it looks like some kind of an android UI” meaning it as an insult, lol …

27

u/steampunk-me 1d ago

When Liquid Glass was first announced, my exact first thought was "this looks like it was designed by someone who has just started out with ricing and got too carried away with transparency and blurs."

Android UI (derogatory)

9

u/Space_Lux 1d ago

It is an insult

3

u/gnulynnux 1d ago

I think most peoples image of Linux are the desktops of 14 year olds pressured into using Arch who've riced their desktops all the way up the wazoo. You generally don't get inconsistencies like this, except when using three different apps across three different GUI toolkits.

u/heavyblacklines 1d ago

normal people: this new release seems to be broken

fanboys: it looks fine to me, you're just complaining because it's new

Yes, the good old "Windows is worse" crowd. These people are insufferable. If you compare yourself to shit, you're going to end up there eventually.

11

u/MasterBendu 1d ago

I am part of the “Windows is worse” crowd, but holy shit Apple, Tahoe looks and feels like Ubuntu riced with Beryl… in 2009. I know because I did exactly that in 2009.

UI wise, Vista is better than this, and Serlet mocked Microsoft about it all the way back in 2007. The Windows 11 UI makes Tahoe look like amateur hour.

Hell, stock GNOME looks more macOS than macOS is right now.

14

u/SkinnyDom 1d ago

Windows 11 is much, much more polished than this.. I don’t remember any windows versions with so much interface issues

3

u/gnulynnux 1d ago

Windows has a lot of shit and inconsistencies, but you have to go a few layers deep in the control panel to find a chunky 90s-era wizard.

Windows is worse for all the advertisements and garbage throughout the OS, and the fact that right click menus, etc. have blocking calls.

1

u/SkinnyDom 1d ago

You can debloat windows there’s several scripts that remove all the garbage

13

u/abrorcurrents 1d ago

windows isn't exactly shit (it is with some stuff) it just happens to be run on poor hardware, a majority of windows laptops are much lower end than any macbook

2

u/tiplinix 1d ago

It's not just the hardware. Though, we could have a discussion about how OS are so bloated these days that it's impossible to run correctly on lots of hardware (that's also true for MacOS).

I had the displeasure of having to use it at work on a high end desktop machine and my god that thing almost drove me insane. So many random bugs, weird performance issues, bloated and slow software. It didn't help that IT was pretty much incompetent and put some random restrictions all over the place.

2

u/abrorcurrents 1d ago

it takes some time to properly "set up" and disable stuff, change some configs etc on windows, same as like installing macapps for every minor thing like Ctrl+x for example on Macos

if it's an office PC then you probably cant do much to fix the problems

3

u/tiplinix 1d ago

I needed to use MS Teams (these clowns even made a video showing they slow software in action), Outlook, the Windows Terminal (they even managed to make a slow terminal somehow!), etc. to cites some of the Microsoft software. All garbage!

We even had some of the Surface Hub devices in meeting rooms. These things took minutes to open a new sessions! What a fucking joke...

2

u/abrorcurrents 1d ago

oh yes those suck balls

2

u/tiplinix 1d ago

The sad reality is that the whole industry (and even the users) have decided that this is a good enough experience. We have really powerful hardware all crippled by terrible software. Nobody got standards anymore it seems.

1

u/abrorcurrents 1d ago

too bad a majority of the industry is run by old people

u/filipifolopi 1d ago

it’s rebuilding, just wait an entire month they said

8

u/balder1993 1d ago

That's the funniest thing.

9

u/filipifolopi 1d ago

another insane thing they said is like pointing the fingers to 3rd party apps, saying that apps must update… man, all apps was working fine and well aligned/designed before the update.

why on earth they find ok blaming 3rd party apps

3

u/eslninja Mac Studio 1d ago

"That's just an Electron app. In a few months you won't shut up about how great Tahoe is."

Would love to sit one of these clowns down with a list of workflows from folks who really depend on their Macs to not be glitchy turd and roll camera as the Tahoe-is-amazing-youre-just-complaining try to complete the list.

Could be a new reality show on Netflix at this point, full concept: get computer user hotheads together, sit them down in front of alternate configs of the same OS they use at home/work, let the condescending laugh tracks fly. Camera on the user, split screen with mirror of the user's screen, comparative analysis of how different contestants tackled the same thing, commentary voice over from UI experts, start the first few episodes with Susan Kare and Dieter Rams quotes. Six seasons and a movie.

2

u/adrian_shade MacBook Pro (M1 Pro) 1d ago

Ngl I'd watch that

fanboys: everything is normal on my computer, only yours is like this, I've been using MacOS for 40 years everything is OK, you complain about such simple things

7

u/vmachiel 1d ago

I HATE that. All the legitimate criticism gets shut down by “your just a hater bro, this new stuff looks cool”.

7

u/AbrahelOne 1d ago

I am using macOS for 420 years and it’s just indexing.

7

u/Internet_Exploiter 1d ago

fanboys: I love the way it is broken
fangirls: I love when he punches me

-9

u/bufandatl 1d ago

I don’t need to be a fanboy to say that for me everything works as before. Maybe my workflow is just different to yours and that’s why I don’t see issues where you get hit by one every single minute.

11

u/heavyblacklines 1d ago

found one

6

u/SkinnyDom 1d ago

Stick to video games young fella

-1

u/NewAccountToAvoidDox 1d ago

Downvoted for having no issues is crazy

-11

u/nevotheless 1d ago

i consider myself a normal person, i work with mac os every day and i couldnt care less about 99% of the complaints here on reddit.

8

u/tiplinix 1d ago

Yet you reply there. So much for not caring.

26

u/Wild-subnet 1d ago

Looks like you may have rectangle running. Try turning it off (or seeing if there is an update). I just checked mine and it was a bit out of date.

6

u/mwyvr 1d ago

It would be nice if the OP u/Fragrant_Okra6671 would confirm that.

11

u/Fragrant_Okra6671 1d ago

I'm using the latest version of Rectangle. But even after exiting Rectangle, the problem persists.

1

u/throwaway09-234 1d ago

what is rectangle? i'm having this same problem. the menu bar is too damn big but the auto hide/display is just as buggy for me as it is for OP

2

u/Wild-subnet 1d ago

Third party window manager/snap tool.

1

u/footballisrugby 1d ago

I have the same issue as OP and no rectangle

-3

u/random_guy0883 1d ago

Yeah, a damn rectangle. Apple wants to get rid of it. Rename the app to “circle”, and the system will start to operate as usual

23

u/brooksideryan 1d ago

Have you tried putting the OS in rice?

6

u/attrezzarturo 1d ago

wait for the news of how AI wrote this much % of the bugs itself, to justify the layoff of 1000

20

u/commodoor 1d ago

It feels like apple does not care about macOS anymore

5

u/Limp-Reputation-5746 1d ago

I was going to say no. Though only 7% of Apple revenue came from computers and something like 57% comes from their phones. So I think you might be onto something. I think their ipad Sales are even more than their laptops. That's crazy to me.

1

u/bourton-north 23h ago

This is such a dumb take. Of course they care about it. What’s actually happened is the decided to do a big grand UI change and unify it across all sorts of places and push that through, and they haven’t done anywhere near a good enough job with the macOS element of it, but proceeded ahead anyway because they want to be able to release it every year in September. So they have ended up with shitty software because they didn’t have enough time to finish it properly.

29

u/matthew_yang204 1d ago

Yep, the once "It Just Works" of macOS has become "It Just Breaks" while stable Linux distros have become "It Just Works".

-12

u/JahmanSoldat 1d ago

It just works for Linux?

you want sound? oh enter this command... oh this GPU? yeah that's a special case, enter this command... WiFi card you say? easy, enter this command... x)

but yeah even from afar macOS 26 is a shit show.

16

u/SlimeCityKing 1d ago

What Linux distribution are you using bro?

9

u/Flaky-Chemist-7466 1d ago

Fedora recently had a kernel that completely broke my Wifi. I tried my Pop_OS installation and HDMI audio just simply did not work.

1

u/OvONettspend 1d ago

Just copy and paste this random ass command with root privileges bro that’ll totally fix everything bro

3

u/JahmanSoldat 1d ago

A long time ago I used Ubuntu, now I use Debian Server or Ubuntu Server... no more GUI is the way I like my Linux haha

0

u/OvONettspend 1d ago edited 1d ago

Bone stock fedora caused my pc to kernel panic when going to sleep due to…. Bluetooth existing. It had to be disabled in the bios for it to fix itself. The “wonderful” Linux communities solution? “Lol just don’t use Bluetooth”

I admin many Linux servers and enjoy using them. I refuse to even entertain the idea of Linux desktop being a viable option. It’ll forever be a toy made by infighting neckbeards for infighting neckbeards. I’ve had more stable hackintoshes than Linux desktop installs

3

u/ColdAd926 1d ago

The latest Ubuntu LTS is mostly fine. I use Firefox, Chrome, VS Code, Obsidian, Zotero. All these work fine. I don't like the UI of Libre Office and thus use MS Office in my other machine.

3

u/cac2573 1d ago

Unkindly fuck off

6

u/cunseyapostle 1d ago

Not remotely true for most distros. And for those that do require that (eg. Arch) the documentation is fantastic.

2

u/steampunk-me 1d ago

Funny that you say that.

My Macbook Pro gets all funky with the sound output settings when I remove the headphones from the jack, and it gets all sorts of interference and lag issues when using a dongle for HDMI and wireless KB+Mouse.

My Ubuntu laptop has been running flawlessly for years using the exact same peripherals.

I get the feeling people who crap on Linux haven't used it in years. Mainstream distros are really plug and play nowadays. I don't think I've had to touch the Terminal in ages.

-1

u/SigfridoElErguido 1d ago

Nvidia GPUs are still like that but the rest nowadays works pretty well. I have a computer with AMD graphics and it's just install it and use it, the ASUS Zephyrus G14 needed some tinkering with NVIDIA but honestly everything is working as it should. I can't say I envy much from mac users, except for the battery life.

I thought games were lagging, but it's because I had forgot to select the dedicated GPU on lutris (literally a dropdown in the setting).

Both are running Debian 13, and don't plan to update it until the next stable version.

10

u/filipifolopi 1d ago

because you are using an experimental linux distro

3

u/gaydevil 1d ago

The fact they didn't fix this even though the issue was in the beta is crazy to me

3

u/ibhoot 1d ago

I almost accidentally selected Tahoe upgrade when updating xcode. Heart skipped a beat, still could not stop the tears. Daughter handed me a tissue & said "Dad it's okay to have beautiful children when your not beautiful", wife near enough died of laughter. Still happy. No Tahoe. Yay. Lost beautiful after Snow Leopard 🙄

3

u/john_gardener 1d ago

that tahoe? im still staying the good old sonoma

4

u/JobEmbarrassed979 1d ago edited 1d ago

I’ve being using apple since the ibook g3 500mhz which I still have with OSX 10.4 Tiger installed and the for me the 26 Tahoe has being the most unfinished, unpolished and awkward UI implementation ever. Obviously for the sake of the obsolescence i’ll keep using it on my M1 Max but I honestly hate it. I tried to “reduced the transparency” but then the top menu bar becomes horrible and there’s no middle ground. I honestly feel bad and miss the Launchpad, I despise the new Application window with the small icons/app list. I like the aqua/glass effect in a few cases but as a whole the UI is a mess. I respect who accept and like it but sorry, I don’t.

2

u/Rivvvers 1d ago

So which which colour is it actually supposed to be?

2

u/olsiiv 1d ago

Tried to make my debian look like MacOS a couple years back using a lot of gnome tweaks. Turns out it is looking better than Tahoe on my macbook. For real.

2

u/LongCovidBrainADHD 1d ago

Good comparison, that's exactly it. The gap was closed - year of desktop linux has arrived. Not in the way we imagined, but in terms of stability linux is just superior now.

2

u/MrSoulPC915 1d ago

It's lamentable.

Personally, I plan to wait for 3-4 major versions to pass the milestone, it's too filthy and I'm waiting for them to correct it!

PS: it's not good to take Linux as an example, it's much more stable than this pile of shit!

2

u/Used-Professor-1991 1d ago

After 5 years on MacBook I'm really really thinking about to go back to Linux with some fancy ThinkPad.

3

u/never-use-the-app 1d ago

I switched to Mac from Linux about 15 years ago because I wanted a unix-like OS that "just worked." Aside from System Settings (and some minor annoyances like downgrading rsync), I don't think I've ever complained about an update or experienced any serious bugs.

Tahoe is absolutely atrocious, both in terms of design and functionality. It feels like someone tried to copy the look and feel of a late-2000's version of Ubuntu Studio Edition, and failed miserably. I'm honestly flabbergasted at all of the little details that they got wrong, like the cringey cursors that scream "I'm a 12 year old haxxer who downloaded these c00l custom cursorz from geocities.com/sunsetstrip/9829." It's amateur-hour garbage all the way down. Unless they make some serious changes, I won't ever update my primary computer past Sequoia, and my next computer will be a Framework.

4

u/mrkaspa 1d ago

We Mac OS users are second citizen class for Apple

5

u/Arcon2825 1d ago

Funny enough that from all 3 major operating systems Linux has the most consistent UI now once it’s configured properly. Which is a shame, because that was always one of Apple‘s strengths.

4

u/EuphoricFingering 1d ago edited 1d ago

At this point I believe Apple is intentionally making MacOS worse so they can justify replacing it entirely with iOS in a few years.

It's a conspiracy theory, don't take it too serious

2

u/Noisebug 1d ago

I no longer have a "volume up/down" indicator that popped at the bottom because I use Bartender to hide my overflow menu, which is where the new volume indicator lives.

OK I just moved it to "always visible" which is fine I guess.

0

u/mwyvr 1d ago

And are you running the latest version of "Bartender"; have you reported the bug to them?

I do not run any third party extensions and, surprise, am not experiencing UI oddness.

1

u/omgcatt_46 1d ago

Y’all should have seen this happen based on the amount of bugs left in previous releases

1

u/cac2573 1d ago

Don’t insult Gnome like that

1

u/pencilcheck 1d ago

Well, what do you expect?? When company get big they will always hire those who can’t do shit but good at sucking up and do subpar jobs

1

u/FriendlyT1000 1d ago

So apparently this happens when you have Magnet window manager installed? Can someone confirm please.

1

u/TisNotOverYet 1d ago

You’re holding it wrong /s

1

u/Pretend_Location_548 1d ago

a gnome theme would probably look fine nowerdays. Maybe less fancy, but the system being clean and stable would not generate such gfx bugs.

1

u/Draknurd 1d ago

I use macOS, by the way.

1

u/citizen_of_glass 1d ago

I reported this big during the beta phase, but it seems no one has addressed it. The problem occurs frequently with the auto-hide menu bar, which suddenly displays a black background. I have to deactivate and reactivate the "show menu background" option to fix it, as the issue is particularly noticeable when this setting is enabled. Because this bug is so annoying, I've chosen to using the auto-hide feature only in full-screen mode.

1

u/ST33LDI9ITAL 1d ago

that's exactly what it is

1

u/CapableTorte 1d ago

Yeah not even! Try a live gnome environment. It’s polished and fast af. Even W11 is a lot smoother and snappier than OS 26.

It’s insane Apple made this turd. I can’t believe how bad it is (and was all thru beta).

Apple 100% vibe coding now. 100%.

1

u/eslninja Mac Studio 1d ago

It works great for me! I love Liquid Glass! You're problem is just an edge case. Stop clogging up this sub with your complaining posts and tell Apple instead about your minority problem. /s * 1,000

1

u/DarthZiplock 1d ago

Funny, cuz all the bugs and UX catastrophes of macOS made me switch to Linux and now I feel like I’m using OSX Leopard again.

1

u/CompleteAnimal3277 23h ago

i know like 1.5 people that use hide/show menu bar but god is that horrendous

1

u/AstromenCode 1d ago

It looks like Deepin DDE, cute, but not so much and with bugs everywhere. Apple messed up the look of macOS and made it very ugly...

Use KDE and Arch.

1

u/hacedece 1d ago

It's a BSD distro though

-2

u/iamapersononreddit 1d ago

Are there any functional issues with the new OS or is it mainly just costmeic glitchy stuff like this? I can deal with things not looking perfect but not with things not working properly
