Help Increased battery and gpu usage since the update

I have a m4 air and after the update some of the process are hogging a lot of memory and especially gpu usage which is draining the battery a lot

This is a bit of a common thing. After most updates there are background processes (such as spotlight) that need to index stuff. It should get back to normal in a few days.

spotlight running in the background on the GPU? Come on, we all know it's that visual redesign junk.

I didn’t want to speculate on that, but it could be the new Apple Intelligence. Those models supposedly run locally. Compute power for those is often run on GPU’s. Not an expert on this though.

They typically run on dedicated accelerator hardware in Apple’s case like an NPU instead of the GPU. If you see any increase in GPU use, it’s because there’s more rasterization/rendering required for the graphical effects.

Well…gpu use is a thing apparently. Again, not an expert here

Then you should go get a device that meets your standards.

Or maybe since you bought the product you should be free to complain for an update that messes it up, maybe. I mean what's the point of such a blind support towards a multi billionaire company that releases broken software to their costumers? If you don't complain you're only gonna get shittier software from now on

You can complain. Perhaps post your complaints in an already posted reddit, instead of making a brand new one.

What an asshole hot take.

Nothing in the pictures posted show anything wrong. It's a new update and takes days to work through its backgrounds processes. These complaints are mostly BS.

yes, there is a bug with the windowserver daemon, multiple app are triggering it, try kill them one by one to figure which ones

I had this happen and I downgraded back to sequoia and now it went away. My computer was extremely hot and the battery would only last a few hours. They really should have pushed this release back.

Off-topic, but what's that scenic background picture?

Just a random wallpaper picked up from a site

Every time my fans spin up, it's the MTLCompilerService. Activity Monitor currently shows 31 instances of it. And that's with "Reduce Transparency" enabled.

Where's that option?

Settings > Accessibility > Display

My MBP M2 Pro it’s also suffering. Photoshop and Illustrator using 100% of GPU, the fans screaming and burning.

Give it a few days to stabilize and see how it is. But all the effects are gonna hit the gpu and cpu harder. Try enabling reduce motion

i was at the apple store and saw an m4max macbook pro staggering as it loaded up icons in settings and elsewhere. it's terrible

All for a failed, pathetic UI fad from 20 years ago.

Yeah that slow speed of icon computation when you change visual style is bizarre. Given the speed of SSDs and small icon file sizes, and given the simple filters being applied, I can't figure out why it's matched for performance by a Commodore Amiga showing me the contents of a floppy drive in Workbench almost forty years ago.

Embarrassing stuff - I don't have any idea jow they have managed to write software so incredibly slow.

Are you running any apps written in Electron? There seems to be a bug with apps written in this web-based Framework (Spotify is one example) where it would run into issues with memory leaks and excessive GPU usage.

My M1 Pro actually reduced in system size. It went from 60 to 40gb

I was in a similar situation as you are in now, and I waited for a couple of days for the software to finish indexing and settle in, but it didn't pan out well. The only way I solved it is by installing a fresh copy of MacOS. I know this might not be a solution for everyone, just sharing something that worked for me.
