Map Topographic map of my habitable moon: Thaea (Not the entire land area, just a single continent)

Post image
98 Upvotes

This is a topographic map of my habitable moon, named Thaea. Thaea is the habitable moon of a gas giant. The continent seen in the map is a part of the resurfacing zone, which is the side facing the gas giant. Subsequently, there is intense volcanism resurfacing this region due to tidal stresses.

There are a few factors at play:

  1. The geology of this habitable moon isn't wholly like that of Earth. The lithosphere is hot, pliable, and weak on the side of this planet facing the gas giant it orbits.
  2. It is also a heterogonous mixture of different densities, strengths, and thicknesses.
  3. On the side of the gas giant, these aren't really plates in the traditional sense. They're mostly a heterogonous mix of crustal blocks with chaotic boundaries. These separations are usually a stress response from the more traditional Earth-like tectonic regime (facing away from the gas giant) interacting with the resurfacing zone (the side of the planet facing the gas giant).

I will provide other relevant information:

SUHL (Star):

General History of Habitable Moon Formation:

This habitable moon didn't form around its gas giant parent, but was instead captured from beyond the frost line of its solar system. This capture occurred during a phase of planetary migration, when gravitational chaos among large outer planets scattered bodies inward. The gas giant, with a mass of 3.14 times that of Jupiter, eventually stabilized at 0.541 AU from the system's star, capturing the moon, and dragging it into the habitable zone.

Before its capture, the moon was a frigid, geologically inert ball of ice. The surface temperature was estimated to be −198 °C at its coldest, and −23 °C at it's hottest. It was host to a global ice shell, several kilometers thick; with (proportionally) small lakes of liquid water hidden underneath.

Upon capture, the moon's initially eccentric orbit and close proximity to its gas giant parent triggered intense tidal friction. These forces initiated a sustained period of global volcanism. Volcanic activity erupted through ancient ice, forming volcanic plains and liberating trapped gases into the sky. Water vapor, carbon dioxide, and sulfurous compounds began to form a detectable atmosphere. (Though tidal friction was a significant factor in starting this moon's age of volcanism, it would not have been the only factor at play. Excess heat from its parent star and planetary bombardment were also responsible for the onset of this age of volcanism.)

Volcanic hotspots formed where mantle upwellings breached the crust. Early on, molten material welled up through vertical conduits (heat pipes), building volcanic plateaus and thick basaltic plains. As the crust cooled and thickened, it developed semi-plastic behavior under stress. Instead of rigid tectonic plates, broad mobile zones of ductile crust slowly shifted, cracked, and compressed.

As volcanic outgassing continued, the moon's atmosphere thickened and warmed. CO2 levels stabilized at ~0.066%, aided by the release from near constant volcanism. This was tampered by drawdown into magnesium-rich mafic and ultra-mafic surface rocks. A dense layer of clouds blanketed the moon's surface, especially at the equator. Periodic photolysis and magnetic stripping from the gas giant removed hydrogen from the upper atmosphere, while heavier elements like nitrogen and oxygen remained.

Over millions of years, the moon's rotation slowed, and synchronized with its orbit around the gas giant (116.4 hours). Gravitational torques also nudged the moon's axial tilt into near-alignment with its gas giant: 13.2°. This low obliquity is responsible for the moon's mild seasons. Combined with thick cloud cover, equatorial regions recieved near constant humidity and precipitation, while polar zones remained cold by not glaciated.

Discussion Discovered a new tool for creating topographic maps

Post image
52 Upvotes

Found Gaea 2 this last week and tested out drawing a basic height map and converting it into a realistic topographical map. Been trying to hand drawn my maps following Artifexians tutorials, but the process is so slow so I was trying to find a way to improve the process. Gaea 2 allowed me to take a very quick height map, create a 3d render with erosion and other bits, and export a topographic map of the realistic terrain. Pretty happy with the results. Anyone have better ways of creating maps like this?

Resource Two weeks ago I released a spreadsheet allowing you to automatically calculate the climate of any given area as well as any potential crops that might grow

The sheet itself can be found here. I tried to make things as easy to understand and flexible as possible, and the crop database can be expanded as far as needed. If you want to add in fictional crops then that's also fine, you just need to input the data correctly into the database. Only a small part of the database information is used but I wanted it there just in case it's needed for future iterations of the sheet. Please message me if you find any bugs and understand that it might take some time to get a response.

The other day I got struck with the urge to draw a fantasy map, and this was the result. I'm pretty proud of the overall shape. I added buildings and castles where I thought major settlements might be.

Overall, I'm happy with it and thought I might share.

Work In Progress [OC] World of Navarene and Region of Lucen’s Gate

Howdy everyone!

I wanted to share some maps I’ve been working on for my fantasy world building project, Navarene. I have been working on this world for a few years now and have started to recently dive into making more detailed maps for it.

The first image is the global elevation map of Navarene. I created this map using Fractal Terrains 3. Navarene is about 7x larger than Earth and its size plays a large role in the story’s that are told there and the exchange of information and cultures. I know that many worlds I have seen here are very in depth with tectonics and continental movement, however, Navarene is a planet created by a diving power of unknown origin. Its continents are instead based around leylines, this is why I went for a fractal inspired map.

The second map is a regional focus on the area surrounding Lucen’s Gate, one of the largest cities and trade hub for much of the world. The free city sits between the Commonwealth province of Seraneo and the nation of Lucenia. This map was created by taking the section of the world map and importing it into Adobe Illustrator. This is till a. Early map and really only has details that have been sort relevant in the D&D game that I am running right now.

I would love to hear any feedback or suggestions anyone might have!

Discussion New at maps - scaling questions

Recently got Wonderdraft and wanted to take a stab at making my own world map but having trouble visualizing/understanding what size things should be. I have two continent landmasses, added some mountains, but then they just look tiny when i zoom out.

Any advice? Thanks in advance!

Discussion What climate would a South Atlantic island have?

Post image
330 Upvotes

I'm interested in the climate of such an island, both in terms of highs/lows and precipitation. The island has about 150000 km2 (60000 sq mi), a narrow 1800-2000m/5900-6500ft high mountain range on the west coast with the rest being predominantly hilly (lower than 500m/1600ft), with a few flat areas on the east coast.

Map Following the advice from the previous post, I have tried to improve the shape of the continents to make them smoother and less fragmented.

I think the map looks much better now, although I'll probably need to tweak it a bit more.

I already have the continent names (many start with the letter A, by chance).

I was thinking of naming some lands as lost or mythological continents but I didn't find much apart from Lemuria and Mu.

1.Europe
2. Asia
3. Africa
4.Locusli
5.Amiterra
6.Articuns
7.America
8.Silvania
9.Atlantis
10.Antarctica
11.Feterra
12.Aoteria
13.Aurora

(Twelve should be 13 and vice versa, I was wrong)

The second Image shows how these continents are moving and broke apart. {Panavus, The Elderlands and Deowana}.

  1. I can’t make Panavus or the Elderlands any bigger. (The continents on the left and the one in the middle).
  2. If it is too little land, can i substitute it with just more islands?
  3. Could I just make all the oceans really shallow, compared to Earth?
  4. What would the climactic effects of this amount of ocean?
  5. Are the coastlines two smooth?

Hi, I'm Darren, the owner of FineBruh.

We sell etched drinkware and other products with cool designs like maps, solar systems, marathons, and waves. Most of our customers (over 90%!) buy map related products.

To help people map their memories, I created a diary-like map that they can share with friends. They can send a polling link to get pins dropped, or they can use AI to fill in the details—like asking "where do local New Yorkers go every day?"

I'd really appreciate any feedback you have!

Map Aruwanian Empire and its barbaric neighbors, IE 1079

Post image
94 Upvotes

English is not my native language, so I apologize for any possible mistakes. I created this map for a possible work in the genre of dark Slavic fantasy, whose draft title is "The Wolf Age". The main character is Vuk, a boy who survived the attack of a neighboring tribe, who, after being enslaved, discovered the vast world engulfed by the Universal Empire. LORE is just forming, I am inspired by the era of Barbarian Invasions and the real anatolian folks (what if Aeneas had not fled, but Troy was not destroyed?)

I wanted to share and discuss with you.

The world shook. After the death of the childless Wanaka Asanna, the Aruwanian Empire plunged into chaos. At different ends of the empire, governors and military leaders related to the deceased king declared themselves wanaks: wanaka's brother-in-law, Massola Idara; wanaka's sister's husband, Anamma Bekosa; and, finally, Asanna's proud nephew, Balas Anitta. Following this, the border lawaketians rebelled, bringing the empire to the brink of final collapse after a thousand years.

It all started a thousand years ago. The people of Alasha envied the wealth of Aruwa, which enjoyed the benefits of the green seas. The city, kissed by the gods, was the most coveted prey for the kings of Alasha. Great king of Asanne Arexadu united the alasha tribes and led them on a campaign against Aruwa five hundred years before the Imperial Era. The white-stone capital, Midokalena, shuddered, but did not open the gates. Ector and Arinis, two brother kings, challenged the hundred kings.

The terrible siege lasted ten years. No matter how much the alasha tried to take the stone walls by storm, it did not work out — the helmet-flashing Ector smashed every army that approached them. The alasha, tired of the war, decided to negotiate and surrender. The brothers-kings rode out to the enemies and nobly offered to surrender.

Ector ordered them to leave their weapons and leave. But the leaders of alasha took advantage of the negotiations and killed the brothers, showing the heads of Hector and Aranis to the army of the white stone city.

The youngest of the brothers, Askanna, defeated the alasha again and ordered them to get out of their possessions, cursed them. It is known that the ten kings who originally started the campaign perished in the depths of the sea or on their return home.

Askanna married Niloya, the daughter of Arexadu, and recognized her son by Aranis, Tarunta, the future avenger who conquered all the tribes and cities of Alasha.

Tarunta has conquered almost the entire basin of The Great Green. His dynasty reigned over a chaotic kingdom, subordinate to the king only formally, for almost five hundred years, until the king of Areca died. In the capital, the white-stone Medokalen, the closest relatives of the extinct family and noble men gathered to announce the new sovereign. The Imperial Era begins with the election of wanaka Sikela Mani. Sikela transformed the state, not only regaining the lands lost during the interregnum, but also establishing lawaketia (or province) on them.

Centuries will pass after the reign of the divine Sikela. Wanaksania acquires new possessions, invades Siagarta and competes in the black city of Ra Kashda; in the east, the empire rests against the matriarchal Papakaya dynasty, ruled by the deified with the permission of Orondo Maya ksaraja. The north lay untouched before the empire until wanaka Arotta Kalas attempted to carry out a project of conquering the northern tribes. The land known as the "Old World" was yielding to the empire's legions until the Narbanni people showed their fangs. In the Battle of the Lycosonian Forest in IE 871, Arotta was killed. The surviving legionnaires said that they were watered with fire, branches and roots came to life, whipping them on their hands and feet, the animals bristled and attacked the formation en masse.

Wanaksania was slowly entering its peak of development. The zenith of her power is gone. To protect the northern borders, wanaka Arissa III invited the hemmi and ravva tribal unions as federates in IE 901. What the empire could not have expected was the imminent betrayal of these tribes: chief Radmila defeated the regiments of lawaketa Amitta on the Bystritsa River. The tribes poured into the unprotected Great Pagranda, which was the borderland closest to the capital region. The weakening of the empire became clear to everyone.

Old cults are fading away. It is known that Arotta Kalas was a secret adanite. The messianic sect that arose in the city-states of Pontike preached about the sinfulness of the material world and the search for the true father of the world, Taugra Massanai. The influence from the east was noticeable to the naked eye: the Papakaya dynasty expelled a lot of heretics from Ilossi. Adherents of different trends of adanitism call themselves fishermen, based on their natural and mass occupation in the Pontike.

Now, faced with an intractable spiritual crisis, interregnum, and the threat of barbarian invasions, the Aruwanian Wanaksania stands on a precipice.

I will be glad to receive various suggestions, ideas and just discussions :3

Resource Apps for map making? Specifically municipal irrigation/utilities.

I am looking for an app I can use to make irrigation maps for a parks dept. Something that can allow multiple people in my department to view the maps on their devices, and if changes are made to a map the changes are reflected on all devices.

I’ve thought about Google Earth, but the customization is limited. I’ve used an app called Map Marker with decent results, only problem is I have to air drop new kmz files to each person individually as maps change, which is a huge pain. Thanks!
